Abstract

The phenomenon of the santri community and the choice of regional head candidates in local politics in Indonesia displays heterogeneous dynamics across regions. In the 2024 regional elections, Gus Barra, son of KH. Asep Saifuddin Chalim won the contest in Mojokerto, while Bu Nyai Munjidah, daughter of the late KH. A. Wahab Chasbullah, lost in Jombang despite having a strong religious pedigree. Both had the capital to win their second terms as incumbents, but the final results differed. This study aims to explain why the charisma and branding of their parents as kiai produced different electoral outcomes in these two santri regions, thereby contradicting the general understanding that santri communities are homogeneous and contributing to the literature on local Islamic democracy and the sociology of religious politics in Southeast Asia. This article uses a comparative qualitative method, drawing on interviews with political elites and Islamic boarding school figures, local media analysis, and KPU data. Weberian charisma and political agency theories are used to interpret the role of santri communities as active actors in the local democratic process, negotiating political choices. The research results show that victory or defeat is not solely determined by religious capital as the primary factor, but is also influenced by gender factors, political patronage, political campaigns, branding, and fragmented support from Islamic boarding schools. In conclusion, the santri community possesses dynamic, context-specific political agency that cannot be equated across regions.

Abstract

This research analyzes the utilization of religious sentiment in the political campaign strategies of local political parties during the regional head elections (Pilkada) in Sidoarjo. The study employs a qualitative field research method through in-depth interviews, media content analysis, and observation. The purpose is to explore how religious symbols, narratives, and identity politics are mobilized to gain political legitimacy and mass support. In particular, the study focuses on how candidates strategically employ religious expressions, such as references to Islamic values, practices, and symbols, to resonate with voters, especially in a region where religion plays a significant role in social and cultural life. The results show that several political parties in Sidoarjo intentionally used religious issues, particularly those tied to Islamic values and institutions, as campaign tools. These strategies include invoking Islamic symbols, securing endorsements from religious leaders, and framing political discourse within religious narratives to appeal to religious sentiment. It has significant implications for the democratic process, raising concerns about the potential polarization of society and the manipulation of religious identity for political gain. Additionally, such practices may impact religious harmony in the region, as political parties exploit religious sentiments to consolidate their voter base. Theoretically, this study contributes to the discourse of political sociology and the sociology of religion by highlighting how religion is instrumentalized in contemporary electoral politics providing insights into the intersection of religion and political strategy in local governance.

Abstract

Religious communities have an important role in shaping and strengthening democratic practices and political participation in Surabaya, Indonesia. This research employed a qualitative approach, incorporating field observations, in-depth interviews, and literature reviews. The purpose of this article is to understand how religious values and institutions influence the political behavior of citizens. To achieve this objective, the study employs a qualitative case study approach in Surabaya. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with religious leaders and political activists, and a review of relevant literature. All data were then analyzed thematically to identify patterns of political participation among religious communities and how religious values shape their political actions. The findings show that religious actors such as clerics, church leaders, and interfaith communities play an active role in shaping political awareness, encouraging ethical political practices, and mobilizing voters. However, there are challenges, including the politicization of religion and the dominance of exclusive narratives. This study contributes to the sociology of religion by demonstrating how religious life in a plural society can become a force for democratization. Further research is suggested to explore digital religious activism in political contexts

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the forms of social tolerance that exist in daily life between Muslims and Hindus in Pemuteran Village, Bali. Pemuteran Village is one of the areas in Bali that has religious diversity, where Muslims and Hindus coexist harmoniously. This research uses qualitative with a phenomenological approach, data collection is done through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation methods to explore inter-religious social interactions in the village. The results of the research based on Social Construction theory show that Externalization is seen in mutual cooperation activities, interfaith participation in celebrating holidays, and respect for each other's traditions. Objectification is reflected through mutual recognition of tolerance as a social norm that regulates relations between people. Internalization, in the end, makes tolerance a collective consciousness that is inherited across generations. The results of this study show that tolerance in Pemuteran Village is a model of harmonious diversity, supported by open communication, local values that respect differences, and a shared awareness of the importance of harmony. Pemuteran Village proves that religious diversity can be a strength to create social harmony.

Abstract

The phenomenon of "nembak SIM," which refers to obtaining a Driver's License (SIM) without going through the official examination process, has become an issue that poses a potential risk to road safety, especially among students. This study aims to analyze the impact of this practice on the road safety of students at the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) using a descriptive qualitative approach through in-depth interviews. The results indicate that students who obtained their SIM through illegal means have a lower understanding of traffic rules, are more likely to violate regulations, and are more prone to being involved in accidents. Theoretically, this research contributes to understanding the impact of administrative social deviance on road safety behavior, as well as highlighting the importance of comprehensive traffic awareness and education. Methodologically, this study offers a qualitative interview approach as an effective tool to explore individuals' perceptions and experiences regarding the "nembak SIM" practice, which can serve as a foundation for further research on social behavior in the context of traffic safety. The results showed that students who obtained their driver's license through illegal channels tend to have a lower understanding of traffic rules and break the rules more often than those who took the official exam. In addition, this group also had more accidents due to a lack of preparedness in dealing with situations on the road. In conclusion, the practice of “SIM shooting” contributes to the low driving safety of UNESA students. Therefore, there is a need for more intensive education on the importance of obtaining a driver's license officially as well as increased awareness of the risks of driving on the road without adequate skills.

Abstract

This research focuses on uncovering Anthony Giddens' duality of structure process in the religious practices of children in interfaith families, specifically how the dialectical interaction between child agency and religious structure reproduces or transforms those practices. The study utilizes a qualitative approach with Alfred Schutz's phenomenology design to capture subjective meaning, which is then theoretically analyzed using Anthony Giddens' Structuration Theory to understand the dialectical interaction between the parents' religious structure and the children's agency. Findings indicate that the family's religious structure is asymmetrical, dominated by the Mother (Islam) through resource control and dual legitimation (theological-pragmatic), which is reinforced by the Father's (Buddhist) strategic withdrawal. The children, as shrewd agents, realize their practices in the form of "distant obedience"; they use discursive consciousness to prioritize relational harmony, while practical consciousness reproduces the structure through ritual routinization. Simultaneously, this practice reproduces the dominant ritual structure, but also transforms the family's signification, shifting the meaning of religion from exclusive dogma toward universal ethics and tolerance, which is key to family resilience.

Abstract

Local religious traditions in Indonesia function not only as ritual practices but also as spaces for the production of social and religious meaning within community life. One such tradition is kembang endog-endogan, which is performed during the commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday (Maulid Nabi Muhammad SAW) in Kluncing Village, Licin District, Banyuwangi. This study aims to analyze the cultural meanings and religious values embedded in the kembang endog-endogan tradition and to examine its role in strengthening the social-religious identity of the local community. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using participant observation and in-depth interviews. Observations were conducted during the Maulid Nabi Muhammad SAW celebration around September 2025, while interviews involved eight informants consisting of religious leaders, community leaders, kembang endog artisans, and residents directly involved in the implementation of the tradition. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the kembang endog-endogan tradition contains religious symbolism representing the values of sharia, iman (faith), and ihsan through the interpretation of the egg's three layers. In addition, this tradition functions as a mechanism for strengthening social cohesion, transmitting religious values across generations, and reproducing the collective identity of the Banyuwangi community. Sociologically, these findings demonstrate that local cultural practices are capable of integrating Islamic teachings with local wisdom in a contextual manner and remaining relevant amid ongoing social change.

Abstract

The reposting of content related to social movements has emerged as a prevalent practice among students, particularly following the widespread circulation of the “17+8 People’s Demands” poster. Existing scholarship has largely interpreted this phenomenon as a mere spectre of participation, predominantly situated within communication and political science perspectives, thereby overlooking its significance as a form of social practice. This study seeks to address this gap by employing Pierre Bourdieu’s framework of social practice, combined with a qualitative methodology encompassing semi-structured interviews and systematic coding procedures adapted from Robert C. Bogdan and Sari Knopp Biklen. Such an approach facilitates an in- depth exploration of participants’ subjective meanings, strategic actions, and reflexive considerations. Furthermore, this study examines variations in social practices across friendship networks, campus culture, and the symbolic power embedded within online environments. Reposting behavior reflects socially embedded, habitus-driven practices involving reflexivity, solidarity, risk negotiation, and symbolic capital considerations within digital communities. Accordingly, this research offers an original contribution by conceptualizing digital activism as a form of social practice dynamically constituted through habitus, capital, and digital environments. In doing so, it extends Bourdieu’s theoretical framework into the domain of social media and underscores that social practices are equally enacted within digital contexts.

Abstract

Mass circumcision in Sooko, Mojokerto, East Java, is no longer limited to the fulfillment of religious obligations, but has evolved into a lively village carnival. This study examines how the transitional rites that were originally private were reconfigured into public celebrations and how these changes reflect the shifting relationship between religion, culture, and the life of rural communities in Java. The research uses a qualitative-interpretive design with an ethnographic case study. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with religious leaders, committees, village officials, circumcision participants, and parents, tracing of documents and photo archives, and digital ethnography of residents' social media content. The analysis uses an interactive model through data condensation, presentation, and verification, with credibility strengthened through triangulation, member checking, and audit trails. The results of the study show four main findings: first, carnival reproduces the three phases of the rite of transition through separation, liminality, and reintegration, with the procession extending the liminal phase as well as transforming the experience of pain into a collective honor; second, preparation of cross-neighborhood harmony to strengthen social capital through reciprocity and community networks; third, religious authority is negotiated through the boundary between festivity and piety; and fourth, mediatization expands the reach of tradition while presenting cost, noise, and spectacle pressures. The research resulted in a Before–After transformation model based on a multi-level framework that connects the dynamics of individuals, communities, and public-digital spaces.
