Abstract

This study investigates the hazardous impact of mercury, classified as a Category B3 heavy metal waste, on human life and the environment. It focuses on the significant contribution of artisanal mining to mercury pollution and its adverse effects on the landscape. In particular, the research examines the health risks posed by mercury exposure to children living in Peri-Urban Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (PESK) areas, including compromised immune responses and the potential for stunting. Urine samples were collected from participants using purposive sampling in accordance with Minister of Health Regulation No. 43/2013 and analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). All ten samples exhibited the presence of mercury, with one falling below the 7 μg/L threshold established by Human Biomonitoring (HBM) guidelines. Notably, the study found that 99% of stunted toddlers exceeded the mercury threshold, while only 0.1% remained below it. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the health and environmental implications associated with mercury contamination.

Abstract

Water is vital to life and ecosystems on Earth. It supports important ecological functions, such as providing resources for flora and fauna, regulating climate, and various biogeochemical processes that affect the environment as a whole. All living organisms, including humans, depend on water for their survival and well-being. This research is a descriptive analysis that aims to reveal the content of suspended solids in the water of rice field streams in Pante Kuyun Village. Conducted since November 2023, this research took place in Aceh Jaya District, with the analysis of suspended solids levels carried out at the Aceh Health Research and Development Center Laboratory. The research subjects included the people of Pante Kuyun Village and the water of the rice fields in the area. The sampling method was representative, where one sample was taken from the water of the Pante Kuyun Village rice field. The results showed that the level of suspended solids (TSS) in the rice paddy stream water reached 6.4 mg/L. These findings provide an important snapshot of the water quality in the area, which can serve as a foundation for further policies and actions to maintain the sustainability of the ecosystem and the health of local communities.

Abstract

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic material widely used in gold mining to refine the metal. The amalgamation process in gold processing has been shown to damage the environment and human health. Natural sources of mercury include volcanic gas and seawater evaporation. Mercury can enter the human body through skin contact, vapor inhalation, and consumption of contaminated fish. The study was conducted in June 2023 on 47 residents around gold mines in the Working Area of the UPTD Puskesmas Ujung Padang Rasian, South Aceh District, Aceh Province. The majority of respondents were male (97.10%) with an age range of 26-35 years (37.10%). The majority had S1 education (45.70%) and lived there for 17-25 years (22.80%). Common acute clinical symptoms included cough, nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Chronic symptoms included somatosensory disturbances, headaches, muscle cramps, tremors, erythema and weight loss. The majority of respondents experienced symptoms such as cough (31 respondents), nausea (30 respondents), vomiting (25 respondents), headache (24 respondents), and diarrhea (18 respondents) due to mercury exposure.
