Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the dynamics of ugamo malim adherents in fighting civil rights. The research used qualitative methods through observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with ugamo malim figures to understand the facts that exist in society. Furthermore, the researchers conducted data reduction before drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that people who adhere to ugamo malim are always faced with intolerance and discrimination. The incorrect understanding of the function and meaning of religion in life, including the views of the minority of ugamo malim adherents, makes it difficult for ugamo malim adherents to be accepted by the general public and government circles. The discriminatory actions felt by religious people from various regions in Indonesia united them in a social movement to gain official recognition from the state. Groups of adherents from various regions in Indonesia submitted a request for judicial review to the Constitutional Court (MK) and it was granted. The efforts of followers of ugamo malim to continue to exist and preserve the values and traditions of the Toba Batak people in social movement theory are called new social movements. The main and first social movement carried out by the ugamo malim community was marhamalimon. Through marhamalimons, various rituals were established, a new center of worship was established, and the organizational structure of the parmalim was also determined. Efforts to fight civil rights were also carried out by ugamo Malim through education. Various negative prejudices against ugamo malim people have been identified by various achievements in the field of education. Ugamo malim people have worked in many government and private institutions and occupy strategic positions.

Abstract

This study aims to Analysis of the Meaning of the Maena Dance in the Falőwa Traditional Feast (Wedding) in the Community in Hiliduho District, Nias Regency” Clifford Geertz's symbolism theory. The Maena dance is a traditional dance that is still preserved and has social, cultural, and spiritual values. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, Sanutunő Maena, and the community, as well as documentation. The results of the study indicate that the Maena dance has a social meaning that is reflected in the togetherness and brotherhood that are established among residents in its implementation. Solidarity is realized through collective participation, mutual assistance, and community cooperation in preparing and ensuring the success of the Falőwa (wedding) procession. The cultural meaning is seen in the preservation of elements of Nias tradition that have been passed down from generation to generation, while the spiritual meaning is seen in the expressions of gratitude, prayers, and blessings conveyed to the bride and groom. From Clifford Geertz's symbolism perspective, the movements, lyrics, dancer formations, and festive atmosphere of the Maena dance are cultural symbols conveying messages of togetherness, respect for tradition and ancestors, and hopes for a harmonious household life. Despite adaptations to changing times, the Maena dance in Hiliduho District maintains its traditional essence and values. In conclusion, the Maena dance serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for transmitting values, strengthening social relationships, and symbolizing the cultural identity of the Nias people.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Sio as an intermediary in traditional Nias marriage ceremonies in Ononazara Village, Tugala Oyo District, North Nias Regency. The focus is directed toward how the Sio positions himself within the customary social arena and how social, cultural, and symbolic capital serve as the foundation of his legitimacy and authority. The research problem arises from the phenomenon of social change, where the authority of parents and traditional leaders, once dominant, is now shared with the presence of the Sio as a central mediator. The study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, validated by triangulation of sources, methods, and theories. Data analysis uses Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of social capital and social arena to reveal the dynamics of power relations in customary practices. The findings indicate that the Sio is not merely a spokesperson but a key actor who maintains harmony, mediates Böwö (bridewealth) negotiations, and ensures effective communication between families. His position is shaped by kinship networks, deep knowledge of customs and ritual language, and social reputation. In the context of modernization, the Sio functions as both a cultural conservator and adaptive mediator who balances economic and symbolic dimensions in traditional Nias marriages.
