Abstract

This systematic literature review examines the integration of Guided Inquiry and Deeper Learning models to enhance problem-solving skills in junior high school Mathematics and Science education. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC databases for peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria and passed quality assessment using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Results reveal a sharp increase in publications post-2020, predominantly from Asian countries (Indonesia, Turkey, Thailand). All included studies reported positive outcomes, with guided inquiry cycles enhanced by reflection, knowledge transfer, and critical thinking components demonstrating significant improvements in students' problem-solving abilities compared to traditional instruction. Thematic analysis identified consistent instructional patterns including student worksheets, real-world problem contexts, and collaborative activities. However, gaps remain in longitudinal research, technology integration, and teacher professional development. This study proposes the Integrated Guided Inquiry–Deeper Learning Framework (IGI-DLF) as a conceptual guide for educators and researchers. The findings conclude that integrating deeper learning principles within inquiry-based approaches effectively fosters higher-order thinking and problem-solving competencies. Future research should focus on long-term skill retention, artificial intelligence scaffolding, and cross-cultural validation to advance mathematics and science education globally.

Abstract

Improving students' academic achievement in Indonesian language studies at madrasas requires effective writing evaluations. This study explores how Islamic behavior and self-esteem attribution among Indonesian language teachers at Madrasas influence their approach to creating writing assessments using a phenomenological method. Through in-depth interviews with twenty teachers, the thematic analysis revealed that teachers' Islamic values provide a religious framework that shapes their understanding and application of assessment development. Teachers' evaluations incorporate moral and religious principles, reflecting on their self-worth and the intrinsic value of students' written work. Islamic behavior and the attribution of self-esteem enhance teachers' commitment to fair, reflective assessments, which ultimately support students' literacy and academic growth. The study suggests that embedding Islamic behavior and self-esteem attribution in writing assessments strengthens teacher development and student success in Indonesian language studies. Future studies could further explore the role of these factors in teacher preparation and assessment practices in Indonesian madrasas.

Abstract

This research was motivated by low student learning outcomes, learning tools that did not provide a positive relationship to students' mathematical abilities, and learning tools that did not include the surrounding culture. This research aims to produce an integrated learning tool for Jambi Batik ethnomathematics that meets the valid, practical, and effective criteria for transforming geometry material in class IX junior high schools. The method used in this research is a combination of ethnographic research and development research with the Plomp model which consists of the Preliminary, Prototyping, and Assessment Phases. The subjects of this research were class IX students of SMP Negeri 21 Batanghari. The results of this research show that the Jambi Batik Ethnomathematics integrated Transformation Geometry learning tool in Class IX Middle School is valid. The device also meets practical criteria based on the results of questionnaires and interviews. Based on the final tests carried out, it shows that the device is in the effective category. So, it can be concluded that the resulting device is valid, practical, and effective.

Abstract

The educational era influenced by the industrial revolution 4.0 is called Education 4.0, which is characterized by the use of computerized innovation in every educational cycle. The problem that researchers encountered at SDN 8 Lawang Kidul and SDN 16 Lawang Kidul was the lack of use of varied learning media and the use of technology. This research aims to develop a Nearpod application-assisted learning tool based on Flipped Classroom for integrated thematic learning in class III elementary schools that is valid, practical and effective. This research is included in Research and Development research which uses the ADDIE development model. Data collection uses observation, questionnaire interviews and written tests. The research subjects were class III students at SDN 8 Lawang Kidul and SDN 16 Lawang Kidul. Data analysis uses a Likert scale by looking at validation analysis, practicality and effectiveness of the Nearpod Application-Assisted Learning Tool based on Flipped Classroom. This research produced a flipped classroom-based learning tool assisted by the nearpod application in integrated thematic learning in class III of this elementary school, namely for material expert validators who got a score of 92%, media expert validators got a score of 96% and language expert validators got a score of 92%. For the practicality questionnaire, teacher responses scored 95.5% and for the practicality questionnaire, student responses scored 90.04%, which is categorized as very practical. The effectiveness test shows an increase in learning outcomes from an average of 54.002 to 87.46. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the flipped classroom-based learning device assisted by the nearpod application in integrated thematic learning in class III elementary schools meets the valid, practical and effective categories so that it can improve student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study developed a Problem-Based Learning (PBL)-based e-module to enhance Numerical problem-solving skills among Grade X vocational high school students. Using the Plomp research and development model, the product underwent preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment phases, evaluated for validity, practicality, and effectiveness. Results indicated the e-module achieved a validity score of 3.36 (valid category) and the accompanying student worksheet scored 3.68 (very valid). Practicality assessments from students and teachers averaged 80.00%, confirming usability and accessibility via smartphones. Effectiveness testing demonstrated 76% average achievement in Numerical problem-solving, with 79.16% of students reaching minimum competency thresholds. Students showed notable improvement in problem comprehension and strategic planning, though reflective verification required further instructional scaffolding. The findings confirm that the PBL-based e-module meets established quality criteria and offers a replicable, curriculum-aligned framework for fostering active, student-centered Numericals learning in vocational education contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the assessment framework used in the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) to evaluate adult problem-solving skills, focusing on its conceptual. In response to the increasing global demand for foundational and adaptive skills, PIAAC serves as a key international tool for measuring literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving in technology-rich environments. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted using PRISMA 2020 guidelines, analyzing 27 Scopus-indexed studies published between 2015 and 2026. The methodological quality of these studies was evaluated using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). The findings indicate that the PIAAC framework conceptualizes adult competencies as multidimensional, functional, and context-dependent, extending beyond basic literacy and numeracy. These competencies are essential for effective problem-solving in real-life and digital contexts. The framework employs a comprehensive design that integrates cognitive skills, background variables, task features, and advanced analytical models to assess diverse populations. Moreover, the inclusion of technology-rich tasks and log file data highlights that competence emerges through dynamic interactions between individuals and their environments. Overall, PIAAC provides an integrative framework linking competencies, cognitive processes, and real-world outcomes.

Abstract

This study aimed to design a valid and practical based on an ethnomathematical approach to assist teachers in presenting data presentation materials. It was expected that the LKPD would facilitate students to understand the materials since they came from the culture them. This study utilized the Plomp development model. The development stages of LKPD were conducted until one-to-one and small group trials at grade V of SDN 01 and SDN 05 Koto Baru Dharmasraya. This study revealed that 1) the validity was 3.63 with a very valid category, 2) the practicality result from the students was 93.05 with a very practical category, and 3) the practicality results from the teachers was 100 with a very practical category. Based on the results, this study concluded that the LKPD based on the ethnomathematical approach for data presentation material was very valid and practical. Thus, teachers could use this LKPD in the learning process at elementary schools, especially at grade V.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the need for innovative, interactive, and digitally integrated mathematics learning materials to improve the quality of instruction in elementary schools. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of a STEAM-based mathematics teaching module supported by Google Sites for Grade V elementary school students. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the Plomp development model, which consists of three phases: preliminary research, prototyping stage, and assessment phase. The preliminary research phase involved needs analysis, curriculum analysis, analysis of students’ characteristics, and learning material analysis. The prototyping stage focused on designing and developing the STEAM-based teaching module supported by Google Sites, followed by self-evaluation and expert validation by material, media, and language experts. The assessment phase was conducted through limited trials, including practicality testing by teachers and students as well as effectiveness testing to determine the usefulness of the module in Grade V mathematics learning. The results showed that the STEAM-based teaching module supported by Google Sites achieved a very high level of validity, with validation scores of 95% for material, media, and language aspects. The module was also classified as very practical, with practicality scores of 98% in the small group trial and 97% in the field test. Furthermore, the effectiveness test yielded a score of 94%, indicating that the module is effective for use in Grade V elementary school mathematics learning.

Abstract

Adult numeracy plays a crucial role in adults’ ability to engage in everyday problem-solving, work, and lifelong learning. However, Indonesia lacks readily accessible assessment tools for contextual numeracy that conform to international standards and are relevant to adult mathematics education. This study reports on the initial development and qualitative evaluation of a contextual numeracy assessment instrument inspired by the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), with a focus on its suitability for adult mathematics education. The instrument was developed through domain mapping and item design aligned with the PIAAC numeracy framework, followed by expert validation via focus group discussions (FGD). This qualitative study developed the instrument through three stages: drafting, cultural contextualization, and scoring rules development. Empirical evidence was obtained through readability involving 10 adult participants and cognitive reviews involving eight reviewers, who served as the primary data source for this study. Participants completed selected numeracy items and engaged in brief cognitive interviews using questionnaires. Qualitative data were analyzed using iterative thematic coding, with coding categories refined through consensus discussions, to identify issues related to understanding instructions, interpreting information, and numerical units, and understanding tables and graphs, as well as sources of confusion arising from contextual or representational features. The findings provide preliminary evidence to support continued refinement and future quantitative validation of contextual numeracy assessments for adult learners. From a mathematics education perspective, this study highlights the importance of readability and cognitive review in developing adult numeracy assessments that accurately capture mathematical literacy in real-life contexts. The refined instrument provides a foundation for future quantitative pilot testing and offers methodological insights for the development of contextual numeracy assessments in adult mathematics education.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to develop a local instructional theory on parallelogram material and examine the improvement of students' mathematical problem-solving skills by using local instructional theory. This research uses the Design Research method, which uses the Gravemeijer and Cobb development model and the Plomp model. The Plomp development model has three stages, namely, preliminary research, prototyping phase, and assessment phase. The research subjects were seventh-grade students of MTs N 5 Jambi City. Data analysis techniques in this study used Quantitative data were obtained through questionnaires, while qualitative data were obtained through observations, interviews, field notes, and final test questions. The results of this study indicate that the local instructional theory on the topic of RME-based parallelogram in class VII is valid. The learning design met the practical criteria based on the results of the questionnaires and interviews. Based on the final test conducted shows that the local instructional theory is already in the effective category. So, the learning flow produced is valid, practical and effective. The implication of this research is that the development of local instructional theory on RME-based quadrilateral material can significantly improve students' mathematical problem solving ability. This shows that through the right approach in learning design, as implemented in this study, the problem solving ability problems that students often experience can be overcome. Thus, this approach has the potential to be widely applied in improving the effectiveness of mathematics learning in schools.
