Abstract

Disaster management addresses gender inequality by mitigating adverse effects on women. Involving women in disaster risk reduction is crucial, but their participation is often insufficient, leading to inadequate attention to their specific needs. In Indonesia, where women make up over half the population, their involvement in disaster management is essential. This study explores women’s disaster risk mitigation strategies and emphasizes gender-responsive disaster management approaches. Following the 2021 Mount Semeru eruption, research in East Java revealed gender-sensitive disaster management deficiencies. Traditional methods often fail to support women and children who are particularly vulnerable. The study highlights the importance of education, training, and gender-sensitive disaster management policies. Using a phenomenological approach, the study conducted direct observations, in-depth interviews, and focus groups. It identified 24 significant obstacles in gender-based disaster management, such as inadequate casualty statistics and the lack of gender-specific infrastructure in refugee camps. The research underscores the need for gender-specific standard operating procedures (SOPs) to safeguard women and children's well-being during and after disasters. Enhancing education and capacity-building in vulnerable villages is also crucial for effective disaster mitigation. To improve disaster resilience, it is essential to integrate women into the disaster management framework, acknowledging their specific needs and harnessing their capabilities.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a nation where foreign space objects are discovered, holds the right to seek compensation, thereby addressing the country's claims to reinstate pre-damage conditions. Under international regulations, any country launching objects into outer space from its territory or launch facilities assumes responsibility for damages incurred in other nations. This research employs a qualitative legal research methodology, employing both statutory and conceptual approaches. The statutory method scrutinizes laws pertinent to the identified legal concerns. The primary sources encompass the 1967 Treaty on the Principles Governing State Activities in Space Exploration and Utilization, including the Moon and Celestial Bodies, and Indonesia's Law Number 16 of 2002, Gazette Number 34 of 2002, Supplement State Gazette No. 4195. The study's findings highlight that the 1968 Rescue Agreement broadened a state's obligations concerning astronaut rescue, recovery, and repatriation, extending these responsibilities to encompass the return of space objects for exploration purposes. The repatriation of foreign space objects mandates compensation for any damage resulting from the descent of celestial bodies. Therefore, Indonesia, under international legal frameworks, can pursue restitution for damages caused by space objects from other nations, ensuring accountability and restoration of affected conditions.

Abstract

Sustainable tourism is a comprehensive strategy that aims to improve the quality of life by ensuring a balanced approach in the provision, development and preservation of natural and cultural resources for future generations. This study examines the prospects for sustainable tourism in Aileu District, Timor-Leste, specifically in Seloi Malere village which consists of six hamlets rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. Using a phenomenological approach, the study explores the experiences and perceptions of local communities regarding the opportunities and challenges associated with tourism development, focusing on important sites such as Dili Vanili and Rai Mutin. The study findings indicate that although these locations have significant natural beauty and great economic potential, they are hampered by factors such as inadequate digital promotion, lack of infrastructure and uncertainty regarding future land use. The study recommends strengthening marketing efforts through social media, improving infrastructure and developing additional facilities to attract tourists and increase local income. Active involvement of local communities, together with strong government support, is identified as essential to maximizing these opportunities and realizing sustainable tourism in the region.

Abstract

Batam City as a center of industry and trade has a large market The city of Batam, as an industrial and trade hub, holds significant market potential for the utilization of digital technology. While Batam has established infrastructure that facilitates inter-island access, digital transformation has yet to reach the smaller surrounding islands. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) remains relatively unfamiliar to many communities on islands outside Batam. The objective of this training, organized by the student boarding school of UPN Veteran East Java, is to provide an in-depth understanding of digitalization and AI concepts in digital marketing as a means to support the economy of Batam Island’s communities. This Community Service Program (PKM) is implemented through socialization on AI concepts, the positive potential impacts of AI, and practical AI application workshops, in collaboration with the Director of the SPMAA Batam Foundation and ICT volunteers. The results of this PKM activity indicate a high level of enthusiasm among the community to learn about AI concepts and their use in marketing products on social media. Through this training, it is expected that MSME owners and the entire community on Batam Island will benefit from technological advancements, particularly AI, and that it will support the government’s efforts in promoting equitable digital transformation across Batam Island.
