Abstract

This study aims to examine the practice of evaluating Arabic speaking skills (maharah kalam) at MTs Pondok Pesantren Darul Ulum Indragiri and identify the need for developing evaluation instruments that are performative-based, standardized, and appropriate for the pesantren context. This study used a mixed methods approach with quantitative survey techniques on 40 students and in-depth qualitative interviews with Arabic teachers. The findings show that the form of evaluation used is still dominated by direct question and answer, while only a small proportion of teachers (35%) use written rubrics. Most teachers conduct assessments intuitively and have not received specialized training in oral assessment design. On the other hand, students expressed feeling more confident after taking the exam, but also faced obstacles such as time constraints and unclear instructions. The mismatch between the communicative learning approach and the evaluation methods used indicates the need for systemic intervention in curriculum design and assessment. This research contributes theoretically in strengthening the concepts of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in the context of oral evaluation in pesantren-based institutions. Practically, this study provides an empirical basis for the development of task-based, authentic, and digital interactive kalam test instruments that can be applied more widely in Arabic language education.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of Genially-based differentiated learning in enhancing students’ Arabic writing proficiency. Using a quantitative pre-test and post-test design, the research involved seventh-grade students at MTsN 4 Sidoarjo. Differentiated instruction was applied by adjusting content, process, and product based on students’ learning styles—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic—through Genially’s interactive features such as multimedia presentations, quizzes, and animations. Data were collected via observation, interviews, documentation, and writing tests, and analyzed using paired-sample t-test and N-Gain calculations. The results showed a significant improvement in writing performance, with the average score rising from 62 to 85 and an N-Gain value of 0.61 (moderate–high). Students demonstrated better paragraph organization, idea development, vocabulary use, and grammatical accuracy, along with increased motivation and confidence. The study concludes that integrating Genially into differentiated learning effectively accommodates student diversity and improves Arabic writing skills. This approach aligns with the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka), emphasizing adaptive, student-centered, and technology-based learning. Teachers are encouraged to optimize digital media to create engaging, personalized, and future-oriented Arabic instruction

Abstract

This study examined the implementation of an approach integrating behaviorist–structuralist theory and cognitive–transformative generative principles in Arabic language instruction for seventh-grade students at MTs Miftahul Afkar, Kediri, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with the Arabic language teacher, and document analysis conducted from February 3 to February 28, 2025. The findings show that the behaviorist–structuralist approach effectively supports habit formation and structural accuracy, while cognitive–transformative generative principles enhance meaningful understanding and students’ ability to independently produce varied language forms. The study concludes that integrating these approaches results in systematic, meaningful, and transformative Arabic language learning and highlights the importance of developmentally sequenced instruction in madrasah education.

Abstract

Background: The quality of assessment instruments is essential to ensure that students’ learning outcomes are measured accurately. In Arabic language learning, Final Semester Assessments (PAS) must be supported by sound psychometric qualities to function as valid and reliable evaluation tools. Aims: This study aims to examine the quality profile of Arabic PAS items at MAN 1 Gresik by analysing their psychometric characteristics and identifying items that are feasible, need revision, or are not feasible for use. Methods: This research employed a quantitative descriptive design using psychometric item analysis. The data consisted of 40 multiple-choice PAS items and students’ response sheets. The analysis integrated content and construct validity with empirical indicators, including point-biserial validity, KR-20 reliability, item difficulty, and item discrimination, using Microsoft Excel and ANATES V4. Results: The results show that content validity reached 92.5%, construct validity reached 82.85%, and empirical validity was moderate (r = 0.60). The overall test reliability was high (r₁₁ = 0.75). Item difficulty is dominated by medium-level items, while item discrimination is the weakest aspect. Based on integrated psychometric criteria, 40% of items are feasible, 57,5% require revision, and 2,5% are non feasible. The causes of the failure of the test items, content validity (7.5%), construct validity (42.5%), empirical validity (2.5%), level of difficulty (12.5%), and discrimination index (22.5%). Implications: These findings highlight the importance of systematic psychometric evaluation in Arabic language assessment. Improvements are needed in construct validity, especially Arabic language accuracy, distractor effectiveness, and item discrimination. Such an approach supports the improvement of school-based Arabic assessments to ensure more valid and reliable measurement of students’ learning outcomes.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition in Arabic as a foreign language within pesantren-based educational contexts continues to face persistent challenges due to the dominance of rote memorization practices that inadequately support deep semantic processing, long-term retention, and communicative readiness. This study aims to examine the pedagogical role of Google Sites–based digital instruction in moving beyond memorization by facilitating meaningful lexical processing, learner engagement, and vocabulary retention among students at SMP Bilingual Terpadu Pesantren Modern Al-Amanah Junwangi, Krian. Adopting a qualitative descriptive design, the study employed semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, involving 25 students and 5 Arabic language teachers. The findings indicate that the integration of Google Sites enhanced vocabulary retention through structured, multimodal, and contextualized content presentation, enabling deeper semantic processing compared to conventional memorization-based methods. The platform also contributed to increased learner motivation and affective engagement. However, the data reveal that students’ spontaneous oral use of newly learned vocabulary remained limited and did not develop optimally. This suggests that while Google Sites effectively supports vocabulary retention and emerging readiness for use, full communicative acquisition requires sustained pedagogical mediation and integration with oral interaction practices. The study concludes that Google Sites–based digital instruction functions effectively as a supportive tool for Arabic vocabulary learning beyond mechanical memorization, yet its success is contingent upon teacher scaffolding and alignment with communicative language teaching principles. This research provides empirical insights into digital Arabic pedagogy in bilingual pesantren settings and recommends further investigation into long-term learning outcomes and the integration of digital platforms with productive language use.

Abstract

This study examines the religious discourse in Aḥlā al-Musāmarah fī Ḥikāyati al-Awliyā’ al-‘Asyrah by Shaykh Abūl Faḍhol Senori using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model. The main objective is to reveal how microstructure, superstructure, and macrostructure are employed in the text to convey social, political, and religious messages within the historical transition from the Majapahit Kingdom to the Islamic Sultanate of Demak. The research applies a qualitative-descriptive method with a critical discourse approach. The data consist of textual units analyzed across three dimensions: microstructure (semantics, syntax, stylistics, rhetoric), superstructure (narrative pattern), and macrostructure (global theme and supporting subthemes). The findings indicate that, at the micro level, the author employs detailed narration, lexical choices, and sentence constructions to reinforce moral and religious messages. At the superstructural level, the text is systematically organized into introduction, content, and conclusion, strengthening narrative coherence. At the macro level, the global theme highlights the collapse of Majapahit, the rise of Demak, and the pivotal role of the wali in the Islamization of Java. These results demonstrate that classical Nusantara texts not only preserve historical values but also serve as a medium of critical and transformative religious discourse. This research contributes to enriching critical discourse analysis in the field of Islamic studies in Indonesia and fosters academic dialogue between global theory and local texts.
