Abstract

Low birth weight babies (LBWB) are more vulnerable to health problems. It is challenging to care them after discharge from the hospital. Mother knowledge and self-efficacy are essential components in determining the quality of care and health outcome of LBWB. However, research investigating mother’s self-efficacy (consisting of self-efficacy in general care, performing KMC, and giving breastfeeding) in parents of LBWB is rare. We aimed to determine the effect of an audiovisual-based educational package on knowledge and self-efficacy in caring for LBWB at home. The study was a pre-post quasi-experimental research with a control group of 48 postpartum mothers with LBWB who met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-four of these mothers whose babies were cared for in the perinatology unit were provided an audiovisual-based educational package as an intervention group, and the rest of these were provided health education standards from the hospital from August to November 2023. Data were collected using a maternal knowledge questionnaire and a modified perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy (PMP-SE) questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the Paired t-test/Wilcoxon and Kruskall-Wallis tests. The analysis revealed that comparison of increasing post-test mean scores across groups (control compared to intervention group) were significantly different in Mother's knowledge (p less than 0,007) and self-efficacy in providing care of LBWB (p less than 0,021; p less than 0,001 and p less than 0,001). The mother's knowledge and self-efficacy significantly improve after received an audiovisual-based educational package. An audiovisual-based educational package for mothers with LBWB can be a helpful nursing intervention to improve mothers' knowledge and self-efficacy.

Abstract

AbstractReproductive health information for adolescent students is still considered taboo and has not yet been included in the school curriculum. A good understanding of adolescent reproductive health is crucial because adolescents are expected to have responsible attitudes and behaviors regarding the reproductive process. The high-risk sexual behaviors among adolescents are due to a lack of accurate knowledge about reproductive health and sexually transmitted diseases. This activity aims to enhance the knowledge of high school adolescents regarding reproductive health. The activity was held in November 2021 at Public Senior High School 2 Malang, involving male and female students. The activity was conducted through health education, discussions, and demonstrations about reproductive health. The chosen media for delivery were audiovisual materials (PowerPoint presentations and videos). Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test questionnaires related to knowledge. The complete questionnaires underwent data analysis. The data analysis results from the participants, with a total of 218 respondents who thoroughly answered the provided questions, showed that the majority of participants were female (71%), aged 16 years (49.1%), from 10th grade (54.6%), enrolled in the science stream (66.6%), and had previously received information about reproductive health (77.1%). Furthermore, a significant difference in reproductive health knowledge scores was found among male students (p-value 0.000), while for female students, the difference was not significant (p-value 0.892). In conclusion, audiovisual educational media effectively enhances reproductive health knowledge.

Abstract

Choking represents a life-threatening emergency that necessitates immediate intervention, making bystanders' knowledge and skills essential for practical first aid. Traditional training methods, such as PowerPoint presentations and printed materials, are widely employed; however, technological advancements have prompted the exploration of self-directed learning through video (SDL-V) as a potentially more effective approach. This study aims to evaluate the impact of SDL-V-based choking first aid training on mothers' knowledge and skills concerning toddler choking in Kalisongo village. Employing a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group, 30 participants from the intervention and control groups were selected through simple random sampling. Knowledge and skills were assessed before and after training, and differences were analyzed using independent and paired sample T-tests. The N-Gain Score test was employed to determine the effect size. The results revealed no significant differences in knowledge and skills between the groups before training (P > 0.05). Nonetheless, significant improvements were noted within each group following the training (P < 0.05). The intervention group exhibited significantly higher levels of knowledge and skills compared to the control group after training (P < 0.05), demonstrating a high N-Gain Score (>0.70). In conclusion, SDL-V-based choking first aid training significantly enhances mothers' knowledge and skills in Kalisongo village. Healthcare professionals should consider the integration of SDL-V into public education and training programs.

Abstract
