Abstract

Barongan Blora is a traditional folk dance in Central Java that has existed since 1830. The passage of time brings up new social conceptions that influence the implementation of Barongan performances, particularly those relating to gender. This research aims to look into the gender roles of Barongan dancers and how they interact with social and cultural components of society. Gender interpretation aims to understand the social construction of men’s and women’s roles in society. These roles include male and female dancers whose motions express diverse traits while maintaining the performance’s significant values. This study employs a qualitative research design with case studies on various Barongan groups in Blora, Indonesia. In May 2023, data was gathered through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results suggest that cat motions dominate the Barongan dance steps, which are supported by strong, energetic, and nimble characters. On the other hand, each character’s movements are tailored to the roles and the dancers who portray them. Male dancers are cast as characters who appear strong and emphasize masculine attributes, such as Barongan, Gembong Amijoyo, Joko Lodro, Untup, and Nayantaka. Meanwhile, female dancers who play male characters, such as Barongan and Jathilan, must be agile, strong, and feminine. Gender distinctions in Barongan performance can be noticed in the movements created. Still, there are no substantial disparities in physical appearance between male and female dancers because both needed a physique corresponding to the characters being played. The Barongan performance also impacts society’s social and cultural features. Regarding social qualities, Barongan embodies the populist traits of the Blora people, which are based on humanist principles. In terms of culture, Barongan Blora has evolved to keep up with changing times, yet it remains and can be appreciated by all levels of society. Due to its uniqueness, Barongan’s preservation is still carried out in line with the times while maintaining cultural values and content in physical and non-physical forms.

Abstract

This research departs from the background that Sandur has a form of sublimation of transcendent normativity values conveyed through folk theater products. The main focus of the problem’s formulation in this study is to analyze the symbol system in Sandur, which is to connect to the meaning of transcendence normativity to be associated with the area of civilized society in the era of globalization. The aim is to prove the existence of the normative meaning of transcendence from the symbol system of Sandur’s spectacle and to implement the meaning of the normativity of the transcendence of Sandur as an effort to civilize society to face the negativity of globalization. The analysis in this study was carried out using descriptive qualitative methods through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature, then described based on the concept of Clifford Geertz’s interpretive anthropology. The results obtained in this study are (1) the symbol system in Sandur’s rituals, scenes, and songs has a transcendent normativity in the form of Mutmainah’s attitude and Beyond meaning, as a network of interactions and relationships in the vertical and horizontal dimensions, and (2) the transcendence civilization of Sandur’s spectacle in the era of globalization through Beyond meanings and attitudes Mutmainah to face the negative culture of globalization that allows the occurrence of cultural and moral decadence. The problem that becomes the focus of the transcendence civilization of Sandur’s spectacle in this study is not rejecting the achievement of globalization progress but rather an attempt to internalize the values in the sign of globalization to maintain the mentality of cultural ecstasy of the people born of transcendence normativity.

Abstract

This community service program aims to provide education and training in learning strategies that are useful for the teaching and learning process in accordance with government requirements. This is based on the observation that most teachers in Indonesia do not receive continuous professional development, and only a few teachers receive guidance from external facilitators, school principals, supervisors, or experienced fellow teachers. The low quality of teachers is one of the causes of the low quality of education. Fundamental changes are needed in the education system, especially those that focus on improving teacher competence, in order to create a quality learning process. One way to achieve this is by organizing training for teachers, especially Japanese language teachers in the Malang Raya area, who rarely have the opportunity to improve their competence. The learning method currently being promoted by the government is the 21st-century learning method. However, to date, many teachers still conduct teaching and learning processes that are not based on 21st-century thinking processes, which require the implementation of critical, collaborative, communicative, and creative thinking. The implementation of 21st-century learning processes does indeed require specific knowledge and effort, making teachers reluctant to implement them. Training in literacy-based learning strategies is one effort to overcome this problem.

Abstract

This study aims to critically examine the values of NU in responding to the political practices of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) which represents an Islamic political model based on the tarbiyah movement. The focus of this study is based on the differences in the characteristics of ideology and Islamic approaches between Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) which is moderate and based on the Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah tradition and PKS which tends to be scripturalist and ideological. This study uses the methodSystematic Literature Review (SLR)by reviewing literature from various national and international scientific journals in the period 2015–2025. The literature was analyzed through a process of identification, selection, and synthesis to gain a deep understanding of NU's response and attitude towards PKS's political style. The results of the study show that NU values such as tawassuth (moderate), tasamuh (tolerant), tawazun (balanced), and i'tidal (fair) encourage a critical but non-confrontational attitude towards identity politics and political pragmatism carried out by PKS. NU's attitude tends to prioritize national ethics and the welfare of the people rather than the dominance of certain political ideologies. In conclusion, NU values function as a balancer in the contestation of Islamic politics and offer an inclusive and contextual approach in dealing with the dynamics of religious politics in Indonesia.
