Abstract

This study aims to explore the application of ethnomathematics in the Bissu Traditional House in Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi, by examining the various mathematical concepts embedded in the design and structure of the building. A qualitative method with an ethnographic approach was employed. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews with the guardians of the traditional house (Puang Matoa), and field documentation. The data were analyzed through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the Bissu Traditional House incorporates concepts such as geometry, numerical patterns, proportionality, symmetry, and measurement. These concepts were then adapted into questions and contextual learning activities for the classroom, including calculating the volume of a triangular prism, analyzing symmetry, and determining stair gradients. This study demonstrates that ethnomathematics can serve as a bridge between mathematics learning and cultural preservation, fostering relevant, contextual, and meaningful learning experiences for students.

Abstract

Mathematical habits of mind and critical thinking skills are essential in mathematics learning; however, they often differ between male and female students. This study aims to describe students’ mathematical habits of mind and critical thinking skills based on gender, as well as to analyze the influence of mathematical habits of mind on critical thinking skills. This research employed an ex post facto design with a quantitative approach, conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Pattallassang with a population of 207 eighth-grade students. A total of 136 students were selected as the sample using a simple random sampling technique. The instruments used were a questionnaire to measure mathematical habits of mind and a test to assess critical thinking skills, while data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. The results showed that female students demonstrated better mathematical habits of mind and critical thinking skills compared to male students. Furthermore, mathematical habits of mind significantly influenced critical thinking skills with a determination coefficient (R Square) of 0,595, indicating that 59,5% of critical thinking skills were effected by mathematical habits of mind, while the remaining 40,5% were influenced by other factors. This study concludes that developing mathematical habits of mind is crucial for improving students’ critical thinking skills. The implication is that teachers can integrate mathematical habits of mind as a key focus in mathematics learning strategies to optimize students’ critical thinking.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy skills are an important competency in the 21st century, but they are still relatively low in various educational units. In addition, gender differences often affect students' thinking styles, learning processes, and achievements in mathematics. Therefore, a learning design that is responsive to variations in learning needs based on gender is needed. This research aims to develop a didactic design that can improve the mathematical literacy ability of class X students of SMA Negeri 8 Bone on linear equation material by considering gender differences. The research approach uses Didactical Design Research (DDR) which consists of three stages: prospective analysis, metapedadidactic analysis, and retrospective analysis. The research subjects were students of class X.8 who were selected based on the results of literacy tests and interviews. The results of the study showed that there was a difference in the characteristics of learning obstacles between male and female students. Male students tend to experience obstacles in the aspects of accuracy and algebraic operations, while female students face more difficulties in the final proof and representation stages. Local context-based didactic design and adaptive literacy strategies have proven to be effective in facilitating conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills across the board. In addition, students' responses to LKPD are positive because they are considered to help understand the material contextually and interactively. This research contributes to the development of a mathematics learning design that is more adaptive to gender differences and is able to anticipate learning barriers that may arise.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integration of Mathematical Literacy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in mathematics education using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The emphasis is on how mathematics learning can support sustainable development by improving higher-order thinking skills. A total of 43 scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025 were collected from Scopus, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Taylor & Francis Online, then analyzed thematically using content analysis. The SLR process followed the PRISMA protocol consisting of four steps: identification, screening, eligibility evaluation, and inclusion. Inclusion criteria included articles discussing the integration of SDGs or Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the context of mathematics education, indexed in Scopus, and in English. The results of the study show that there are five main themes: the role of teachers as key agents of transformation, mathematics curriculum: gaps and opportunities, the role of technology and digital innovation in the learning process, affective and well-being approaches to learning, and interdisciplinary collaboration for transformative learning. The integration of SDGs is currently still limited, but has great potential if supported by ESD-based teacher training, adaptive curriculum, and the use of innovative learning technology to build students' social and ecological awareness.

Abstract

The digital revolution has profoundly transformed economic, social, and cultural structures, demanding the emergence of new competencies such as mathematical literacy and computational thinking as essential foundations of 21st-century education. This study aims to analyze the conceptual interrelation and pedagogical implications of integrating these competencies within the context of learning in the digital economy era. Employing a qualitative exploratory approach through a systematic literature review, data were obtained from scholarly publications over the past decade that address the integration of mathematical literacy and computational thinking. The findings reveal that their integration enhances logical reasoning, problem-solving, and data-driven decision-making skills, while the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies further supports adaptive and reflective learning environments. Nevertheless, the success of this integration requires a holistic pedagogical framework grounded in humanistic values to prevent the decline of students’ critical and independent thinking abilities. Therefore, the integration of mathematical literacy and computational thinking can be viewed as a strategic transformation in education to cultivate digitally literate, creative, and adaptive generations prepared for the challenges of a knowledge-based economy.
