Abstract

Innovative learning models are essential to enhance students' cognitive abilities and address misconceptions in physics learning. This study aims to provide an overview of the influence of implementing the Synectics learning model with mind mapping assignments on the quantity of misconceptions and the cognitive learning outcomes of senior high school students. The research employed a quasi-experimental method using a randomized control group pretest-posttest design. The study was conducted on 11th-grade students at a senior high school in Palu, Central Sulawesi, during the 2023/2024 academic year. A cluster random sampling technique was used to select the sample. Data collection was carried out using pretests and posttests to measure the improvement in cognitive learning outcomes, while posttests were used to assess misconceptions experienced by students during learning with the Synectics model with and without mind mapping assignments. Observation sheets were also used to monitor the implementation of the learning process. The results showed an improvement in cognitive abilities for the experimental class, with an average normalized gain (N-Gain) of 0.63 (high), compared to 0.50 (moderate) for the control class. Based on a significance test at the 0.05 level, the findings revealed that the Synectics learning model with mind mapping assignments significantly outperformed the Synectics model without such assignments. Additionally, descriptive analysis of the misconceptions indicated that the Synectics model with mind mapping assignments resulted in fewer misconceptions compared to the model without mind mapping assignments.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of Earth and Space Science modules integrated with eco-pedagogy and science literacy (IPBA-EcoLisa) in improving students’ logical and critical thinking skills. A pre-test–post-test design was employed with 43 prospective physics teacher students. Data were collected using validated instruments measuring logical and critical thinking abilities and analyzed using N-Gain scores. The results indicate a moderate improvement in logical thinking skills (N-Gain = 0.36), particularly in students’ ability to apply patterns and rules to predict Earth and Space Science issues. Critical thinking skills demonstrated a significant improvement (N-Gain = 0.52), with the most notable gains observed in the Basic Support and Basic Clarification indicators. These findings suggest that integrating eco-pedagogy and science literacy within IPBA learning effectively strengthens higher-order thinking skills while fostering environmental awareness. In conclusion, the IPBA-EcoLisa module represents a promising instructional approach for supporting sustainable science education and enhancing essential cognitive competencies in physics education students.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Indonesian Student Exchange Program (PMM) in enhancing the self-confidence of Physics Education students at Tadulako University and to identify the challenges faced during their participation in the program. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with participants consisting of Physics Education students who have taken part in PMM. Data were collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The questionnaire, consisting of 18 items, showed that the majority of respondents gave positive assessments regarding their self-confidence improvement after participating in PMM, with an overall average score of 89.73%, indicating a very effective category. The interview analysis supports these findings, informants reported an increase in public speaking confidence, adaptability in new environments, and expansion of social networks. Challenges encountered included cross-cultural communication barriers and differences in learning systems, which were managed through effective adaptation strategies. Overall, PMM provided new insights and fostered students’ academic and social self development.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and design flashcard-based learning media that can enhance students' motivation to learn. The research employs the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The flashcard media was designed using the Canva platform for visual design and Assembler Edu for AR content integration. Validation was conducted by subject matter experts and media experts. The trial involved 20 students and 3 science teachers, with data collected through learning motivation questionnaires, student and teacher response questionnaires, and pretest-posttest assessments. The validation results showed a media expert score of 4.59 (very feasible) and a subject matter expert score of 3.50 (feasible). The responses from teachers and students were categorized as very feasible, with scores of 4.41 and 4.37, respectively. Students' learning motivation increased, with a score of 4.02 (high category) and an N-Gain of 72.34% (high category). The media also proved effective in improving students' understanding, as seen in the increase in the average posttest score (77.95) compared to the pretest score (20.9). The study concludes that this AR-based flashcard media is feasible, practical, and effective as an innovative learning tool. Recommendations for further research include improving the quality of physical materials (lamination) and expanding the development to other physics topics.

Abstract

This research investigates the competence of junior high school science teachers in Palu City, Indonesia, regarding laboratory teaching. The study aims to assess teachers' abilities in planning, implementing, and evaluating laboratory-based learning. Data were collected through observations, document reviews, and interviews with science teachers across six public junior high schools. The findings reveal that all schools engage in laboratory learning to some extent, with varying degrees of success. Teachers often create their own worksheets or use existing guides from science kits. Challenges identified include insufficient laboratory space, incomplete equipment, and a lack of dedicated laboratory assistants. Despite these obstacles, science teachers collaborate to ensure effective laboratory learning, highlighting the need for improved resources and support to enhance the overall quality of science education. The study concludes that while teachers demonstrate competency in laboratory teaching, further development is needed in creating practicum guides, conducting experiments, and assessing student skills. Future research should explore the impact of teacher competence on student learning outcomes in laboratory settings.
