Abstract

The mental models are internal representation possessed by students when learning a concept. This study is intended to explore students mental models on Heat and Temperature concept. This research was conducted on 11th grade students of Science program (N = 60) at one senior public school in Malang. Data were collected through open-ended questions and analyzed using the SSI method, which consisted of three levels of mental models. Based on the results, most of the students are still at the synthetic level. In addition, some differences of the students in visualizing the state of solid atoms during expansion, direction of heat conduction, and direction of heat convection. The future study is expected to explore the mental models of students in other topics of Physics education and make use of appropriate learning models to increase students mental models.

Abstract

Abstract

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17977/um024v4i12019p023

Abstract

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) made of TiO2 have received increasing attention since O’Regan and Gratzel published their work in Nature in 1991 [1]. Some studies have been conducted to determine the effect of the TiO2 electrode thickness on the DSSC performance. Nevertheless, the effect of the electrode thickness on the J–V characteristics, especially the short circuit current density (Jsc), has not been adequately addressed. Therefore, in this investigation, parametric analyses were conducted to study the DSSC electrode thickness effect on Jsc. Diffusion model was used to derive the equation of nanoporous semiconductor film thickness (d) dependence on Jsc. TiO2 paste was prepared using same method as Ref. [2]. The cells I-V curve were characterized using a computerized digital multi-meter (Keithley 2400) with a variable load. The cells short circuit current (Jsc) data gotten from the I-V characterization were plotted as the function of the thickness of TiO2 films. The result of the data plot was then compared and fitted with the theoretical modelling result. It is apparent that the DSSC performance largely depends on the TiO2 film thickness. The results was also showed that the diffusion model provided good approximation to describe the dependence of Jsc on the film thickness of DSSC.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17977/um024v4i12019p001

Abstract

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17977/um024v3i22018p063

Abstract

Studies of comparing the performance of photoelectrode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) continue to be carried out and developed. The ZnO nanorods as an electrode for DSSCs have been shown to have high electron collection due to the capability of electron photoexcitation and increased electron transport. Various methods of making ZnO nanorods have been studied and developed. However, the method requires controlled conditions under high temperature and pressure, thus limiting the commercialization of ZnO nanorods. Therefore, the seed solution-based hydrothermal method was chosen in the ZnO nanorod deposition process because it is an effective method, low-cost and easier fabrication process. The method of growing ZnO nanorod was carried out with three times of growing for 6 hours. ZnO nanorod was synthesized using different seed solutions, namely sample 1 and sample 2 by using methoxy and isopropanol, respectively. In this work, the SEM image shows the growth of ZnO nanorods vertically aligned on the FTO substrate and resulted in a smaller diameter for the isopropanol seed solution. The smaller diameter of the ZnO nanorod provides a larger surface area then increasing the total amount of dye attached to the ZnO nanorod and improve the photovoltaic performance.DOI:  10.17977/um024v6i22021p077

Abstract

The effort to obtain a good crystalline state of delafossite CuCrO2 phase is becoming important along with their potential application and scientific important results. In this paper we report the result of crystal growth and their Magnetic and Electric Capacitance Measurements. We focused on two methods i.e. flux decomposition (FD), and Bi2O3 Flux Growth (FB). The starting materials for FD growth were K2Cr2O7 and CuO taking the advantage of the potassium dichromate’s decomposition. In case of FB flux growth, we should prepare the correct molar ratio for CuCrO2 pellet on the Bi2O3 powder in 1 : 6 ratio. It is found that both methods are possible to obtain crystalline phases along with their specific technical processes to be overcomed. We show that FB method resulted flaky shapes while FD method produced rather bulky morphology. The obtained samples were checked by CAD4 single crystal diffractometer for their lattices and MPMS-SQUID magnetometer for their magnetization for different orientation. We check also the electric capacitance at the range of 5 K to 300 K along c lattice direction. It is found that their single Neel temperature (TN) fall around 25 K. A distinct anisotropy of magnetization profiles shown by its crystal directions and planes. On the other hand the out of plane electric capacitance of Mn doped crystal did not show any transition at the range of 5 K to 300 K.

Abstract

Mental models is an ability that must be possessed by students, so it is necessary to do a meaningful evaluation as a basis for developing students' mental models. However, in Indonesia research on the field of mental models is rarely done because of several factors, one of which is a lack of reference methods that can be used as an evaluation tool. The purpose of this article is to convey methods that can be used to evaluate mental models derived from published articles. The results of our study provide choices of methods that can be used, namely the AC-SMM, SSI, SMD and PDE methods
