Abstract

This research aimed to analyse and explain the realization of communication strategies by extrovert and introvert students in conversation. The subject was the fourth semester students in Walisongo State Islamic University. This research employed the descriptive qualitative. I used questionnaire to determine the students’ personality. Recording is needed to obtain the data then followed by transcribing and analyzing the data. The result reveals that extrovert students realized four kinds of communication strategies and do introvert. The similarities were found in the percentage rating of realization which stalling or time-gaining strategies was most used in the conversation. Students tended to use this strategy to maintain the conversation. The next similarity was the way of their realization of communication strategies. They also used those strategies for the same purpose and function. For the differences between extrovert and introvert students, it was found that frequency of the realization was different. The extrovert students tended to more dominant in all strategies than introvert. It showed that extrovert students often used achievement strategies, stalling or time-gaining strategies, and self-monitoring strategies than introvert. In interactional strategies, the introvert tended to use interactional strategies more often than extrovert.

Abstract

This research is descriptive qualitative research which focuses on adjacency pairs patterns of Trumps’ victory interview in ’60 Minutes’. The objectives of this study are to analyze the patterns realization of adjacency pairs in the interview, to evaluate the adjacency pairs contribution of the conversation flow in the “60 Minutes”, and to evaluate the pedagogical contribution. The subject of the research are Lesley Stahl, Donald Trump, Melania Trump, Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump, and Tiffani Trump. The writer collected the data through observation and documentation. There are two data collections that had been analyzed in this research. The data collection are the video of the interview and the transcription of the interview. The writer found some research results. First, there are six patterns of adjacency pairs found in this research. The following details are 45 data of question patterns, 17 data of assertion patterns, 7 data of request patterns, 4 data of assessment patterns, 1 data of compliment pattern, and 1 data of invitation pattern. The dominant data is the question patterns and the least data is the compliment and invitation patterns. The second is the contribution of conversation flow. Almost all the responses given by the speakers are preferred responses, so the conversation runs smoothly. Although, there are some dispreferred responses given but it does not decrease the meaning of the conversation. It gives effective contribution to the flow of the conversation. The third is this research has contribution to the theoretical and practical aspects. The theoretical contribution implicated to the theory development of linguistic especially conversation analysis and adjacency pairs. Meanwhile in practical contribution, this research can be used as reference in teaching English especially speaking.

Abstract

Language has a significant role in communication. As social being, almost everyday people use language to communicate with others such as communication over the telephone or a direct conversation. In conversation there was a certain rule wich has to be learned to avoid misunderstanding. It was called politeness. Talk Show was television program that amuse poeple because of the conversation and joke in it. In this study the writer focused on Ellen Show inform the USAfor the following reasons. First, it was one favorite Talk Show in USA. Second, there are few people talking about politeness. Politeness can make relationship better with the other. Hence, the writer examined it in the talk show. The last, related to the data, the writer found the contribution of impoliteness used by the host to ELT.There were two data collection methods used in this research: the video of the talkshow and the transcription of the interview. Based on the analysis, the reseacher found kind of politeness strategies used by the host. There are four types of politeness strategies employed by Ellen Degeneres in the Ellen Show when having conversations with the guest star. They are bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategy. The politeness strategies contribute to make the realitationship between people closer and make all learn how to appreciate others.

Abstract

This study presented the experimental research finding which its This study presented the experimental research finding which its objectives were to identify the effect of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC)-based Role Playing Game and Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR)-based Role Playing Game (RPG) on reading comprehension of the students with different learning styles. The subjects were 56 students from two classes of vocational High School in Pati with visual and auditory learning style. The two classes were randomly selected to be an experimental group I (CIRC-based RPG) and an experimental group II (CSR-based RPG). The data were obtained from questionnaire and pretest/ posttest. The findings revealed that the students of the experimental group I perform better on reading skill than the experimental group II; however it was not significant. The data showed CIRC- based RPG and CSR- based RPG were effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. Then, students’ learning styles, visual and auditory students, did not differ significantly from one another in their effect on the students’ reading comprehension (F<4.03 and p: .05). Finally, it was found that there was no interaction among teaching techniques, students’ learning style and reading comprehension.

Abstract

The aims of this current study are to find out  the  types of  commissive used  by  the  candidates  in  the  debate, to analyze how the commissive speech acts are realized, to reveal how the commissive speech acts are responsed by the audiences, to interpret why the commissive speech acts are realized in the debate, and  to explain the most dominant types of commissive speech in the debate.  The research design was a descriptive qualitative design describing the linguistics phenomena found in the president election debate. It is focused on commissive speech acts based on Searle’s categories. Three instruments used in this research, namely: observation, recording technique, and note-taking technique. The data was analysed using description the setting, participants, and topics of the debate, categorization the utterances according to the topics, categorization  the  collected  candidates’ utterances  based  on  the  topics  which are talked in the debate, description the utterances based on the topics, and classification of  the  utterances  based  on  the  theory  of  speech  acts especially  illocutionary  acts proposed  by  Searle  (1976). The research findings indicated that the most common commissive speech act found is a promise. The commissive speech acts realized in the debate expresses some intention (sincerity condition). The importance of commissive speech acts realized in the debate is to convince the audiences based on the candidates’ ideas, vision, and mission and their works ahead after one of the two candidates wins the presidential election.

Abstract

This study aims at developing multiple-intelligences (MI)-based materials for teaching English in elementary school. It applies the research and development method. In the exploration stage, a needs analysis and a document analysis were carried out. Thirty public elementary school teachers in Semarang filled out a questionnaire. The document analysis was meant to find out to what extent the English learning materials used by most of the teachers addressed the MI theory. In the development stage, the prototype of the model was developed, evaluated by experts and tried-out in one school. In the last stage, a pre-experimental study was carried out in three schools. The results indicated that learning materials which have variations of tasks were needed. The analysis of the learning materials showed that some intelligence types were very rarely represented. As for the prototype of the model, some revisions were required. The result of the t-test indicated that the model was effective for improving the students’ English mastery. This study suggests that the model of MI-based materials developed is appropriate for teaching English to elementary school students.

Abstract

This study focuses on the practice of corrective feedback used by a teacher in SD Semesta Bilingual School. The objective of the study is to describe the type of corrective feedback used by a teacher in SD Semesta Bilingual School and to describe the frequency of each type of corrective feedback used by the teacher in teaching English in SD Semesta Bilingual School. This study is a qualitative research. The data were taken by interviewing an English teacher and taking video of teaching and learning process. The videos were transcribed which in the next step, they were analyzed for gaining the result. The data were analyzed in the noticing, collecting, and thinking process according to the theory of qualitative data analysis by Siedel (1998). According to the analysis, the teacher in SD Semesta Bilingual School used all kinds of corrective feedback. The result shows that explicit feedback is the most frequent corrective feedback which represents 24.14%. The other strategies are as follows: (2) Recast occurs 17.24%, (3) Clarification Request occurs 13.79%,(4) Metalinguistic Feedback occurs 13.79%, (5) Elicitation occurss 13.79%, and (6) Repetition occurs 13.79%. The most dominant type of using corrective feedback is explicit correction. The implication of using corrective feedback on English speaking is that, the student will be brave to active on every teaching learning activity especially on speaking.

Abstract

Sympathy may be generally defined as a support given to other who is believed that he/she is undeservedly suffering or misfortune. Identical to the positive notion of „support‟, the practice of sympathy in the society portrays deviating purpose. Powerless can effectively appeal to the sympathy of their counterparts for their own strategic gain, and more specifically, that this powerless individuals can leverage their weaknesses through the strategic use of sympathy in order to mitigate the disadvantages of lacking power. This powerless strategy may even be used to maintain their relation with the powerful. It calls sympathy as means of resistance. These phenomena will be noted as the abuse of sympathetic power. This article is intended to explore the practice of sympathetic power to counter hegemony. It attempts to portray the sympathetic power‟s potency as means of resistance to counter hegemony. The area of inquiry constricted into the specified context of Minah‟s Cocoa Beans Stealing Case in 2009. The study will be conducted by combining Fairclough‟s CDA model with Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), particularly by considering interpersonal metafunction proposed by Halliday. Based on the analysis, Minah appeals sympathy by exposing her innocence and all the characteristics that she naturally possess. She was able to influence court decision to set her free even all the evidences prove her for commiting the crime of stealing.

Abstract

Problems of delivering instructions have been faced by student teachers as the prospective EFL teacher candidates in many teaching practicum cases. This phenomenon has led to challenging discussions on how to cope with the problems. It also in one side brings about an awareness of the importance of empowering student teachers with good classroom English proficiency as one of the required skills that should be owned by English teacher candidates. This study reveals how Communicative Peer Assessment (CPA) works for developing the Classroom English proficiency of EFL teacher candidates. Referring to the research result CPA has been proven to give significant contribution to the teacher candidates in terms of some learning experiences, i.e. (a) allowing them to perform intensive communication practice; (b) stimulating the efforts of improving the classroom English performance through the peer teaching reflections; and (c) contextualizing the instructional English expressions.

Abstract

The present study investigated the effectiveness of Cognitive and Structure-Proposition-Evaluation strategies in teaching TOEFL reading comprehension to high and low motivated students. An experimental research with factorial design 2x2 was used in this research. The first group was treated by using cognitive strategy and the other was treated by using SPE strategy. The motivational questionnaire was conducted for classifying the students upon the high and low motivation. The data were analyzed by applying Two-Way ANOVA. The result reveals that (1) cognitive strategy had a significant effect for teaching TOEFL reading comprehension among students with high and low motivated students, (2) SPE strategy had a significant effect for teaching TOEFL reading comprehension among high and low motivated students, (3) there was no significant difference between the students’ achievement after the implementation of cognitive and SPE strategies for teaching TOEFL reading comprehension among high and low motivated students, (4) there was no significant difference of students’ motivation in reading comprehension when they are taught by using cognitive and SPE strategies for high and low motivated students, (5) there was no interaction among teaching strategies (cognitive and structure-proposition-evaluation strategies), motivation (high and low motivated students), and students’ reading comprehension.
