Abstract

Coastal erosion poses a serious threat to the coastal areas of Padang City, West Sumatra. The role of mangroves as natural protectors of the coast from erosion and tidal flooding is increasingly being eroded due to land conversion and human activities. This study aims to examine the relationship between mangrove damage and the level of erosion in several coastal areas of Padang and to evaluate the mitigation efforts that have been carried out. The research methods used were field surveys, remote sensing with satellite imagery, and analysis of coastal geomorphological data using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). The results of the study showed an increase in erosion in areas experiencing mangrove degradation, while areas with dense mangroves tended to experience accretion. The decline in mangrove area and quality is exacerbated by the conversion of areas into fish ponds and coastal development activities. Erosion mitigation needs to be carried out through mangrove rehabilitation and a participatory approach involving the community to maintain the sustainability of the ecosystem and environmental resilience of the Padang City coast.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of education, population, and technology on household waste management decisions. This study used multiple linear regression analysis with data obtained from BPS Susenas 2023 data in the West Sumatra region. The findings of this study revealed that the level of education (junior high school, high school, and university), population, and technology, did not have a significant influence on household waste management decisions. Although some variables such as technology and education level have a positive relationship direction towards waste management, the results are not statistically significant, which means they are not strong enough to influence households' decision to manage waste. These results suggest that households' decision to manage waste does not only depend on education, population, or technology use, but may also be influenced by other factors, such as environmental socialization, local policies, availability of waste management facilities, and ingrained habits.

Abstract

One of the main challenges in the reclamation process of former coal mining land is low soil fertility. Common soil characteristics found in former mining land include unbalanced pH, low organic matter content, poor soil structure, and minimal availability of nutrients. This makes it difficult for plants to grow and develop optimally in former mining land areas. This type of research is an experimental research with a Research Design using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) 4 x 6. The population of this study was all Ruji Bean Plants (Pueraria javanica) growing in the Wire House area of PT. Pacific Coal Mining with a sample of this study of 24 Ruji Bean Plants (Pueraria javanica). The results of this study are that the provision of UFB Organic NPK fertilizer has been proven to help improve soil conditions. The dosage of UFB liquid organic NPK fertilizer solution for optimal Ruji Bean plant growth is in treatment 4 with a dose (90 ml). In terms of economy, the production of UFB liquid organic NPK fertilizer is IDR 40,300/liter, while the price of liquid NPK fertilizer on the market is IDR 100,000/liter. So, the use of UFB liquid organic NPK fertilizer solution can be a good choice for reclamation activities, this can save fertilization costs for post-mining land reclamation activities and is environmentally friendly because UFB liquid organic NPK fertilizer is made from organic materials.

Abstract

Young coconut fibers, often found as waste, contain tannin and anthocyanin compounds that can produce various natural colors, so they can be used as organic dyes. The research method used was an experiment with a focus on testing silk thread dyeing using young coconut fiber extract dissolved in rice field water. This study aims to explore and develop the use of young coconut fibers as a source of environmentally friendly natural dyes. The results showed that young coconut fibers have the potential as organic dyes. Young coconut fiber extract with fermented rice field water solvents produced three color variations depending on the fixator used: brownish black (ferrous sulfate), gray (alum), and brown (lime). Structural tests using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) proved that the dyeing process did not change the cross-sectional shape of the silk thread. In terms of tensile strength, yarn with alum fixation had the highest strength compared to native yarn, ferrous sulfate fixation, and lime fixation. Elongation tests showed the highest elasticity in yarn with alum fixation, followed by lime, ferrous sulfate, and native yarn. The color fastness test against washing at a temperature of 40°C showed a fairly good level of fastness for organic dyes from young coconut fiber

Abstract

Hydroponics, a farming technique using nutrient-enriched water, has been widely practiced due to its suitability for limited agricultural land. One of the key factors affecting hydroponic efficiency is the nutrient blend, with AB Mix and liquid organic fertilizer playing a crucial role. This study aims to evaluate the potential of nanotechnology-based nutrient solution in hydroponic to enhance nutrient absorption and improve plant growth in different vegetable species. Five vegetable species, which include red lettuce, red spinach, green spinach, pakcoy, and kailan, were selected to assess the interaction between nutrient composition and vegetable species. A study with factorial design was conducted using a randomized complete block design (RCBD). The primary factor was the fertilizer composition and the secondary factor was the type of vegetable. The treatments consisted of Control (Well water + AB Mix), P1 (Nanotechnology water + 100% AB Mix), P2 (Nanotechnology water + 25% nanotechnology liquid organic fertilizer + 75% AB Mix), P3 (Nanotechnology water + 50% nanotechnology liquid organic fertilizer + 50% AB Mix), P4 (Nanotechnology water + 75% nanotechnology liquid organic fertilizer + 25% AB Mix), and P5 (Nanotechnology water + 100% nanotechnology liquid organic fertilizer). Growth parameters measured included plant height, fresh weight, dry weight, number of leaves, and leaf area. Data were evaluated using a two-way ANOVA to assess the effects of fertilizer composition and vegetable type, followed by a 5% DMRT test for mean comparison. The findings indicated that the use of liquid organic fertilizer technology influenced plant growth. The most optimal average growth was recorded in the P2 treatment (a combination of nanotechnology water, 25% nanotechnology liquid organic fertilizer, and 75% AB Mix), while the least favorable result was observed in P5 (nanotechnology water combined with 100% nanotechnology liquid organic fertilizer).
