Abstract

Increasing atmospheric CO₂ concentrations contribute to climate change, with industrial and economic activities accelerating greenhouse gas emissions. However, human-induced emissions also stem from deforestation, where forests act as carbon sinks through photosynthesis but release carbon when cut down. Forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by storing carbon, and their restoration can enhance their carbon-absorbing capacity. This research, based on a literature review, examines the role of forests in providing ecosystem services for environmental resilience, utilizing sources from Google Scholar, Elsevier, and Science Direct. Forests and agroforestry systems contribute to food and nutritional security, providing various products like food, medicine, and materials for construction and fuel. However, forest fires and logging disrupt these contributions. Forests support livelihoods by offering diverse products and ecosystem services. Managing forest gaps, which influence biodiversity and nutrient cycles, is crucial for forest ecology.

Abstract

Coastal erosion poses a serious threat to the coastal areas of Padang City, West Sumatra. The role of mangroves as natural protectors of the coast from erosion and tidal flooding is increasingly being eroded due to land conversion and human activities. This study aims to examine the relationship between mangrove damage and the level of erosion in several coastal areas of Padang and to evaluate the mitigation efforts that have been carried out. The research methods used were field surveys, remote sensing with satellite imagery, and analysis of coastal geomorphological data using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). The results of the study showed an increase in erosion in areas experiencing mangrove degradation, while areas with dense mangroves tended to experience accretion. The decline in mangrove area and quality is exacerbated by the conversion of areas into fish ponds and coastal development activities. Erosion mitigation needs to be carried out through mangrove rehabilitation and a participatory approach involving the community to maintain the sustainability of the ecosystem and environmental resilience of the Padang City coast.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of education, population, and technology on household waste management decisions. This study used multiple linear regression analysis with data obtained from BPS Susenas 2023 data in the West Sumatra region. The findings of this study revealed that the level of education (junior high school, high school, and university), population, and technology, did not have a significant influence on household waste management decisions. Although some variables such as technology and education level have a positive relationship direction towards waste management, the results are not statistically significant, which means they are not strong enough to influence households' decision to manage waste. These results suggest that households' decision to manage waste does not only depend on education, population, or technology use, but may also be influenced by other factors, such as environmental socialization, local policies, availability of waste management facilities, and ingrained habits.

Abstract

One of the main challenges in the reclamation process of former coal mining land is low soil fertility. Common soil characteristics found in former mining land include unbalanced pH, low organic matter content, poor soil structure, and minimal availability of nutrients. This makes it difficult for plants to grow and develop optimally in former mining land areas. This type of research is an experimental research with a Research Design using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) 4 x 6. The population of this study was all Ruji Bean Plants (Pueraria javanica) growing in the Wire House area of PT. Pacific Coal Mining with a sample of this study of 24 Ruji Bean Plants (Pueraria javanica). The results of this study are that the provision of UFB Organic NPK fertilizer has been proven to help improve soil conditions. The dosage of UFB liquid organic NPK fertilizer solution for optimal Ruji Bean plant growth is in treatment 4 with a dose (90 ml). In terms of economy, the production of UFB liquid organic NPK fertilizer is IDR 40,300/liter, while the price of liquid NPK fertilizer on the market is IDR 100,000/liter. So, the use of UFB liquid organic NPK fertilizer solution can be a good choice for reclamation activities, this can save fertilization costs for post-mining land reclamation activities and is environmentally friendly because UFB liquid organic NPK fertilizer is made from organic materials.
