Abstract

This research examined the use of gesture on Mind Your Language movie season 1-5 perspective George Yule perspective. Mind Your Language movie is about condition of school or class that students from different country such as Italy, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, China, Japan, India and Pakistan. The objectives are to know the gesture used and how the gesture used on Mind Your Language movie based on George Yule perspective. The researcher used documentation to collect the data. During the process of research process, researchers here should see and hear repeatedly from “The Mind Your Language Movie”, then researchers showing the picture which one is showing the gesture, make every effort to collect and copy data which is related to the research. After that, the researchers finally processed it by using content analysis in a gesture based on George Yule perspective that are three Iconic, Deictic, and Beats. The result of this study is the researcher finds thirty eight gestures based on George Yule perspective that are iconic are twenty, deictic seven, and beats eleven. Each of the three gestures has different language functions ad meaning. Gestures on this movie used by teacher and students both in the classroom or outside the classroom.

Abstract

Figurative language is one part of semantic study which is usually used in poems and song to enrich the meaning of that literary works. This research aimed to find out the kinds of figurative language, the most popular kinds of figurative language, and the meaning lies behind Speechless song lyrics by Naomi Scott. The method of this study used descriptive qualitative design. The source of the data in this research was the lyrics of Speechless song. However, the researchers collected the data by reading the lyrics. The results showed there were three kinds of figurative language used in that song such as: metaphor, hyperbole and personification. Metaphor was the most repeatedly utilized in the song with 53% use, hyperbole was 30% and personification 15%. The meaning lies behind this song tells about feminism or women empowerment. Therefore, all figurative languages used were aimed to convey the personal emotional power of the singer toward her oppressor. It was vividly expressed by Naomi Scott by using those figurative languages in her song lyrics.

Abstract

The study is aimed to analyse national character building in Novel entitled “Pudarnya Pesona Cleopatra. The researcher referred to the list of character building according to Doni Koesoema 2007. The research applied descriptive qualitative research method. The method of gathering data is the Documentation method. The researcher intended to describe the National Character Building based on the utterances and behaviour of the main characters in the Novel. The data analysis is a significant step in a part of this research, because it aims examining the data collection’s validity and reliability. In analysing the data, the procedures are 1) the researcher selected the Novel. 2) The researcher read the Novel. 3) The researcher tried to find the National Character Building from “Pudarnya Pesona Cleopatra”. 4) The researcher analysed the data. 5) The researcher drew the conclusion based on the data analysis. Based on the finding of this research, the writer found religious, responsible, hard-working, curious, respectful, inclusive and communicative, peace-loving, and compassion in the novel “Pudarnya Pesona Cleopatra”. There are 7 religious, 2 responsible, 3 hard-working, 1 curious, 2 respectful, 2 inclusive and communicative, 7 peace-loving, and 2 compassion in the novel.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of YouTube Music platform as teaching media to improve students’ listening mastery. It is believed that YouTube Music as an innovative media could be used effectively to attract students’ interest in increasing their listening mastery. By using true-experimental research with quantitative design, there are 52 students were divided into two groups, 26 students for experimental group and 26 students included in control group. This research used test and questionnaire as research instrument. There are several findings to prove that YouTube Music platform is an effective media to improve students’ listening skills. By conducting test as first instrument, it was found that the average score of students taught by YouTube music was 79.85. It was higher than those who taught by conventional media (71.50). By analyzing the data, it can be concluded that there are significant different between students taught by innovative media than those taught by conventional media. This result also affected by students’ perception in learning listening which was found by students’ answer from questionnaire.

Abstract

One of the most crucial language skills for students to achieve is reading. Through their participation in this activity, students can improve their language skills and get experience. Using Google Classroom, this study attempted to examine EFL students' perceptions of reading comprehension. Because TBI (English Teaching Department) IAIN Madura is one of the universities that conducts online learning, it was chosen as the study's subject. This study used a sample of 26 students. Purposive sampling was used as a sample technique in this study. The results indicate that the students submitted useful and good responses. The results show that no student answered strongly disagree (SD), 3 students chose to disagree (11,5%), 16 students chose to agree (75%), and 6 students chose to strongly agree (23%). Google Classroom, it can be concluded, is a solution for online learning classes. As a result, Google Classroom can be used to collect student assignments and, more importantly, to help students improve their reading comprehension. Furthermore, if this application is effective, successful, and also assists students in assisting in e-learning, particularly in receiving feedback after completing the work assigned by the lecturer, it can be used in conjunction with Google Classroom as an e-learning solution for COVID-19.

Abstract

The Covid-19 epidemic, which started in Wuhan, China in 2019, has spread to a number of countries, including Indonesia. Learning from Home is another term for online learning (BDR). To show support for government policies and to assist students in meeting their educational needs, SMKN 1 Bakung adopts an online learning strategy using e-learning. The aim of this article is to show many types of literature and the use of devices in e-learning as a source of literature. Qualitative research is used for this research. After analyzing the data, it could be concluded that in e-learning SMKN 1 Bakung, there are some types of works of literature. They are separated based on their characteristics and locations. Due to the characteristic, they are textual, non-textual, and mixed documents. While based on the location, they are general and references collections. The literature is mostly in form of pdf to make them easily accessed by students. The use of devices in e-learning is as follows: accessing courses, accessing exams/tests as well as accessing teleconference.

Abstract

The purpose of this research aimed to know the students’ perception on their online Extensive reading learning. Survey design was used to conduct this study, and therefore, the questioner was constructed as the instruments of the study besides the researcher himself. The participants of this research were 44 students of first semester in the Accounting Department at FLSP class of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (Class A). The researcher adopted the questionnaire from a previous study conducted by Yogurtcu (2013), Tseng (2015), and Torres (2017), and the questionnaire showed the students’ perceptions of their online learning. The questionnaire consists of 20 statements and each statement has five alternative responses from 1 to 5: Strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, and strongly agree. Google Form is the media to distribute the questionnaire due to the global pandemic of Covid 19. The results of the study indicate that students show positive response towards the use of Extensive reading in online learning. The students perceived that benefits of the activities had substantial effect on increasing their vocabularies, and students focused on educational evaluation they read during the semester. Based on the data, there are advantages, they are: we can complete to read the whole text, we can determine mind idea and supporting idea of the texts, The online reading activities helped me to get more interested in reading text, we can easily understand the text from online reading activities, and there is disadvantage, they are: distraction (Tools and Signal).

Abstract

The use of digital applications is very helpful in teaching and learning process, especially for language classes. The existence of technology is very helpful for teachers to increase student interest in learning about English language lesson. The development of the digital world is used by teachers to be used as a tool to facilitate student learning. This research focuses on the role of using a digital application called Wattpad which will make students diligently read English reading texts, so that they become more skilled in learning. In this research, the researchers defined the term digital application to explain the use of digital application in an effort to improve English as a foreign language learning skill. The related review of literature shows that the use of multi-media technology can improve students’ language learning skills because matches their interests. Therefore, their English skills can be better.

Abstract

This research is aimed at inquiring the use of small group discussions in the improvement of speaking skills studied in classroom action research (CAR). The population of the research was the eighth-grade students of SMPN 2 Curug consist of thirty students. The researchers used one class as a control group. Based the result of this study, the researchers implemented the action in two cycles; every cycle consists of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The first is planning, the researchers identified a problem. The second is acting, the researchers collected and analysed the data. The third is observing, in this stage the researchers developed a plan to make change and implemented these changes. This cycle reflects the components of action research. It is critical to consider the impact of the changes made when reflecting. The result of this research is the mean score of students on the speaking test before carrying out the Class Action Research (CAR) is 57,5 for pretest and post-test 64,7 in the first cycle, this is the student’s treatment. And in the second cycle 70,6 after using small group discussion. It means that the mean score of the post test is greater than the pre-test. Thus, this research that using small group discussion can improve students’ speaking ability for the eighth-year students of SMPN 2 Curug.

Abstract

In Indonesia, teaching learning process through Moodle as learning management system (LMS) has been implemented in education levels such as junior high schools, senior high school and universities. To find out the role of Moodle in learning English at a higher level, it is important to know whether students have different or the same perceptions about the use of Moodle in higher education, postgraduate level. The subject this research was postgraduate students from 3 different classes of English education department at University of Islam Malang. In this study, a qualitative method was used in the descriptive design, with an online questionnaire serving as the research instrument. Questionnaires are used to collect research data. There were 22 items in the questionnaires administered using Google Form that was purposed to know postgraduate students’ perceptions on Moodle at  University of Islam Malang with 3 aspects to analyze; Moodle implementation, Moodle practicality, and online learning environment. The results revealed that studying English through Moodle was preferred with 66,7% of respondents agreed with the statement. For Moodle practicality, it was easy to run with 20 respondents agreed the statement or 60,6% as percentage. Online learning environment made students easier to comprehend lecturers’ explanation of materials given as 63,6% respondents agreed with the statement in the questionnaire. From those results, it could be concluded that Moodle was a preferred LMS. It was considered easy to use. Online learning environment also eased students to understand lecturers’ materials in English education department
