Abstract

This research is motivated by the low both Mathematical Problem Solving Ability (KPMM) and Mathematical Disposition (DM) in solving problems of grade VII MTs students. This study aims to see an increase in KPMM and DM MTs students in Kuantan Singingi Regency. The form of research was quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest control group design. The population of the study was MTs students in Kuantan Singingi District with the sample being Grade VII students from 3 MTs in Kuansing. Data collection instruments in this study were KPMM tests and DM questionnaires. Data were analyzed using t-test, Mann- Whitney U test, one-way Anova. The results obtained were an increase in KPMM for students who treated with Think Talk Write (TTW) strategies in cooperative learning. They were higher than students who obtained learning with a scientific approach (g_TTW = 0.75> 0.61 = g_PS). So it appears that the increase in KPMM and DM students who get the TTW Strategy in Cooperative Learning is higher than students who get learning with a scientific approach.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the issue of students’ low performance in mathematical communication skills. The purpose of this development research was to produce a teaching module based on the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach for the topic of statistics, aimed at facilitating the mathematical communication skills of seventh-grade students in junior high school. The research was conducted at SMPN 17 Pekanbaru and employed the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Validation of the teaching module was conducted by three expert validators, followed by revisions based on their suggestions and feedback. A one-on-one trial with three students was then carried out to evaluate the readability of the student worksheet within the module. After being declared valid, the module was tested on a small group of six students and a large group of 33 students to assess its practicality. The results showed that the average validation score was 90%, which falls into the “very valid” category. Furthermore, the average student response score was 91%, indicating a “very practical” category. These findings suggest that the developed teaching module is both valid and practical, and can be effectively used by teachers in the mathematics learning process.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that problem-solving ability is a fundamental skill that students must possess. However, field observations indicate that students"™ problem-solving abilities in linear programming material remain relatively low. The aim of this study is to describe students' problem-solving abilities based on Polya's theory, which consists of four stages: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and reviewing the solution. This study employs a qualitative descriptive research design. The subjects of the study were 22 eleventh-grade students from the Accounting and Finance Expertise Program at Vocational high School (SMK) Negeri 1 Pagaran Tapah Darussalam. Data collection techniques included tests, interviews, and documentation. The test instrument consisted of essay questions assessing mathematical problem-solving abilities in linear programming material. The results of the study reveal that: (1) At the very good level, students were able to solve problems sequentially according to Polya"™s stages; (2) At the good level, students completed the stages in sequence but failed to explicitly state what was being asked in the problem and did not review their final solutions; (3) At the poor level, students exhibited calculation errors during the implementation stage of the problem-solving plan; (4) At the very poor level, students were unable to solve problems according to Polya"™s stages.
