Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out the ability level of male and female students and the significant difference between the ability of the second year male and female students of SMP IT Aziziyyah Pekanbaru on comprehending descriptive texts. The research was conducted from March 18, 2019 up to April 10, 2019. The population of this research was the second year students of SMP IT Aziziyyah Pekanbaru with the total number of 88 students (52 males and 36 females). A purposive sampling technique was used to determine the sample of the research. The total sample was 72 students that consisted of 36 male students and 36 female students. To collect the data in this research multiple choice tests were used. Descriptive text was used to know the students' ability on reading comprehension. The result of the research showed that the ability of the second year male and female students of SMP IT Aziziyyah Pekanbaru on comprehending descriptive texts is in good level and there is no significant difference on comprehending descriptive texts in term of their genders. It means that Null hypothesis (H0) is accepted and Alternative hypothesis (H1) is rejected.Key Words: Comparative, Gender, Reading, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research investigates the use of L1 in English Study Program, University of Riau. This study aims to know students’ preference, the frequency used and students’ reasons for the use of L1 in English classrooms. This study applied survey designed. The population of this research was the second-fourth-sixth-semester students of the English study program of Teachers’ Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Riau with a total number of population is 344 students. The number of the sample in this research was 120 students. Data was collected by using an online questionnaire and interviews. Data was analyzed by using Microsoft Excel. The results showed that the majority of students suggested English must be used and a small percentage of students suggested using L1 to make them easier to understand the materials taught by lecturers.Key Words: English, English classrooms, L1, Students’ Preference, Students’ Reason

Abstract

Abstrack: The research was aimed to find out the effect of gallery walk strategy toward students reading comprehension of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. The design of this research was quasi-experimental research with an experimental group and control group pre-test and post-test. These two groups were selected to be a sample by using cluster random sampling. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. It was found that t-test score was 2.351 while the t-table was 2.001. Since t-test score was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of gallery walk strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru.Key Words: Reading, Reading Comprehension, Gallery Walk

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of Jigsaw strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMKN 2 Kepenuhan Rokan Hulu in comprehending recount text. This research design used one group pre-test and post-test. The sample of this research are taken by using cluster random sampling technique and that falls to Tata Busana class as big as 25 students. The data were collected by multiple choice tests. The data analyzed by using SPSS 23.00. The result of the data analysis showed that mean score of the pre-test was 59.50 and the mean score of post-test was 74.80. In other words, the mean score of the post-test was higher than the pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test was higher than t-table (2.49 > 1.71) at significance level of 5%. It can be concluded that Alternative Hypothesis was accepted. Thus, there was a significant effect of jigsaw strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMKN 2 Kepenuhan Rokan Hulu in comprehending recount text. The implication of the findings was that the students should study in group like Jigsaw and more focus on the given tasks to increase their vocabulary items. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the ability and the level of the first year students’ ability in comprehending descriptive text on heritage at MTsN 1 Dumai. The ability is about comprehending descriptive text on heritage in general and for each components of reading comprehension in terms of finding main ideas, factual information, the meaning of difficult words, finding reference and finding restatement. Before administering the test, it was tried out in class. Its purpose is to check the validity and reliability of the test. The data were collected by using descriptive text on heritage test in the form of multiple choice. The test contained 5 texts with 25 items. Based on the data analysis, it was found out that: the ability of the first year students in comprehending descriptive text on heritage in general is in good level with the mean score of 71.55. Then, the students’ mean score in finding the main idea is in excellent level with the mean score of 85. While, finding the factual information is in excellent level with the mean score of 90. Finding the meaning of difficult words is in average level with the mean score of 55.55. The next is finding reference is in good level with the mean score of 60. Finding restatement is in good level with the mean score of 66.66. Based on the findings of this study, it can be suggested that the students should learn more seriously on the part of meaning of difficult words which deal with the comprehend ability of descriptive text on heritage.Key Words: Analysis, Ability, Descriptive text, Heritage.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research was to find out if the community language learning method could improve students’ speaking ability of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru.The participants were 30 students. The data was collected by using observation sheets, speaking tests, and field notes. The test was used to collect the quantitative data and the observation sheets were used to collect the qualitative data. After accomplishing this research, the writer concludes that the use of CLL method in speaking recount text can improve the students’ speaking ability. The result of pre-test shows the average score of students speaking ability was 45.5. It improved to 67,7 on the post-test 1 and 76,7 on the post-test 2. It was also proved that that the use Community Language Learning could improve the students’ behavior in learning especially in speaking ability. They are more active and have a great motivation during the process of teaching and learning since they are free to explore their idea and share to their friends. In addition, applying story telling technique could also improve students’ ability to speak English in terms of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. Abstract

Abstract: This study seeks to search the types of code mixing and the dominant of code mixing which are often used the television program in Master Chef Indonesia Season 5. In this study research, descriptive analysis and documentation method were applied. The finding discovers that the types of code mixing which had been observed in the television program are the intra- sentential code mixing 89%, intra-lexical code mixing 11%, and involving a change pronunciation 0% in Master Chef Indonesia Season 5.Keywords: Analysis, Code-Mixing, Television program, Master Chef Indonesia Season 5

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was conducted in order to find out the students’ ability in identifying English morphemes. The data were collected using test in the form of multiple choice. The test covered four subtopics; morphemes, allomorphs, derivation and inflection. The sample of this research was the sixth semester students of English study program of FKIP-UR who had passed content subjects English Morphology and Introduction to Linguistics. They consisted of 3 classes: A, B, and C, and using cluster sampling technique, class A was chosen as the sample of this research. Before the data were collected, the try out was conducted in order to make sure that the test was good and valid. There were 7 rejected items and those items were revised before have been distributed to the sample. From the data analysis, it was found out that the students’ ability in identifying English morphemes was in poor level with the average score 46.20. The result of the students’ ability in identifying English morphemes for each subtopic was in the average level for morphemes (50), allomorphs (52.5) and inflection (55.7) while derivation was in poor level (36.3). Based on the finding, it was suggested that the students need to do more practice in order to help increase their understanding of English morpheme. Further research can focus on studying each subtopic in details; in addition, other researchers can also focus on how to overcome the high level of difficulties of English morphology materials. Abstract

Abstract: This study discusses the phenomenon of code switching in a novel titled NY Over Heels written by Dy Lunaly (2003). The researcher used a study document as the way to collect the data and The research design of this research was a library study with qualitative research. A Study document is getting the data about a case or variable from note, book, magazine, novel, etc (Arikunto, 1990). The key instrument of this research is the researcher herself. Based on the research that had been done, the research comes to some conclusions. Firstly, As the result, there are 87 data that have been found by the researcher. The data showed that Emblematic or tag switching is about 8.04% from 87 data. Intra-sentential is about 37.93% from 87 data. Inter-sentential is about 54.02% from 87 data. The dominant type of code switching found in the novel is inter-sentential from 28 chapters. Secondly, Besides the type of code switching, it was found that the reasons why the characters in the novel use code switching. From seven reasons that Hoffman (1991) states, there are six reasons have been found from the 87 data code switching from the novel that researcher classify. The data showed that expressing group identity is 28 times or 32.18%. Talking about particular topic is 19 times or 21.83%. Emphatic is 12 times or 13.79%. The repetition used for clarification is 5 times or 5.74%. Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor is 1 time or 1.14%. And the last Interjection is 22 times or 25.28%. In this section of the reason of code-switching is the highest calculation has found is expressing group identity is 28 times from 28 chapters.Key Word: Code-Switching, The Novel Dy Lunaly.

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive qualitative research was aimed to know the frequency of types and functions of code switching by the English teachers in the classroom at SMA Darma Yudha Pekanbaru. The sample of the research was consisted of three English teachers. In order to gather the data, the writer used observation, recorder and students’ questionnaire to support the data. The types of code switching appearing in the classroom were observed based on the theory proposed by Poplack, while the functions of code switching appearing in the classroom were observed based on the theory proposed by Matton and Burenhult. Moreover, to interpret the data gathered, the writer analyzed them through four steps of analysis, they are: recording, rechecking, transcribing and classifying the data. While in the students’ questionnaire, the responses were analyzed through simple percentage calculation. The findings indicate that the types of code switching were simply found in three types: (a) thirty seven times in intra-sentential code switching, (b) thirty six times in inter-sentential code switching and (c) fifteen times in tag switching. Moreover, the functions of code switching used by the English teachers in the classroom were found in four functions; (a) twenty one times in elaboration function, (b) twelve times in affective function, (c) sixteen times in repetitive function and (d) six times addressee specification. Finally, the results of students’ questionnaire indicate that the students had a positive perception of teachers’ code switching in the English instructional process.Keywords: Code Switching, English instructional process.
