Abstract

The development of critical thinking is closely related to the questions asked by teachers as the teachers higher-order questions are cognitively demanding to promote students critical thinking. The purposes of this study are to investigate how critical thinking was implemented in EFL teachers questions in the classroom and the challenges faced by EFL teachers in integrating critical thinking questions. In addition, this study also investigated students reasons for non-response to particular questions asked by teachers. Applying mixed-method research design, the data were collected from classroom observation, interview, questionnaire and documentations. The research participants were two English teachers and 229 number of students of year 8. The results showed that the most dominant questions asked by the two English teachers were in Lower-order questions (78,8%), while the Higher-order questions were only (21,2%) questions. Second, the challenges faced by teachers were students intelligence has yet to reach the level of higher-order thinking, unconducive-classroom environment, teachers creativity itself, parental involvement and students lack of vocabulary. Third, dealing with the reason for students non-response in particular questions asked by teachers, there were some reasons, such as students are afraid of making mistakes, they could not put ideas into words, and lack of vocabularies. In conclusion, the teachers faced various challenges in implementing critical thinking questions in the classroom.

Abstract

Indonesia memiliki beragam karya sastra lokal yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai materi ajar BIPA seperti cerita rakyat dan legenda. Keragaman cerita rakyat yang dimiliki setiap daerah dapat menambah wawasan budaya pembelajar BIPA. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian Inderawati (2009), kemampuan berbahasa Inggris mahasiswa dapat ditingkatkan dengan mengaplikasikan Model Seni Pertunjukan Sastra Lokal. Bertolak dari hasil penelitian tersebut, makalah ini mencoba menggagas sastra lokal dalam pembelajaran BIPA melalui model seni pertunjukan untuk mengintegrasikan kemampuan berbahasa penutur asing tingkat lanjut. Model seni pertunjukan sastra lokal tersebut mengolaborasikan tujuh strategi respons pembaca (merinci, menjelaskan, menafsirkan, memahami, menyertakan, menghubungkan, dan menilai) dan dua dimensi respons simbol visual (tablo dan sosiogram). Kolaborasi kedua respons menghasilkan pembelajaran bahasa yang kreatif dan menyenangkan yang tersusun dalam sintaks berikut: 1) pembelajar membaca cerita rakyat dan menulis respons mereka, 2) pembelajar melakukan monolog tentang isi cerita rakyat, 3) pembelajar mendiskusikan dalam kelompok cerita rakyat yang telah dibaca, 4) pembelajar memeragakan tablo dengan cara memilih satu paragraf yang menarik dan kelompok lain menebak isi dari peragaan tersebut, 5) pembelajar mendiskusikan dan memperdebatkan isi tablo, dan 6) pembelajar memeragakan tablo dalam bentuk sosiogram sebagai akhir dari pertunjukan.

Abstract

Pendidikan karakter berkaitan erat dengan kecerdasan intelektual, emosional, dan spiritual. Masalah yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana instrumen uji kecerdasan dalam ranah pikiran, perasaan, dan karsa dan bagaimana subjek penelitian mengapresiasi karya sastra (cerpen) yang berlatar bidang pendidikan. Subjek penelitian terdiri atas 51 mahasiswa dari berbagai program studi di FKIP Universitas Sriwijaya. Paradigma penelitian utama adalah R & D, namun metode deskriptif digunakan untuk mengeksplorasi apresiasi sastra dan persepsi mahasiswa tentang keterkaitan antara instrumen uji kecerdasan intelektual, emosional, dan spiritual dengan pembelajaran sastra di universitas. Hasil penelitian ini berupa: (1) instrumen uji kecerdasan berkontribusi sebesar 69,2% yang diberikan sebelum dan sesudah membaca karya sastra dan (2) dari segi intelektual, emosional, dan spiritual, ditemukan sebesar 95,2% mahasiswa prodi pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia, Sejarah, dan Matematika dan 95% mahasiswa prodi pendidikan Bahasa Inggris menanggapi secara positif isi dari pernyataan-pernyataan apresiasi sastra sebagai bagian dari instrumen pengembang kecerdasan secara keseluruhan. Dengan demikian, instrument uji kecerdasan IQ, EQ, dan SQ secara signifikan berkontribusi pada penguatan pendidikan karakter.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate the description of the transformational leadership behaviour of school principals of private vocational senior high schools in Palembang, and how the school principals implemented the transformational leadership in the school and how the transformational leadership impacted to the teacher performance. The subjects of this study was four school principals of four private vocational senior high schools in Palembang. The data collection was taken from the questionnaire and interview. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed by simple statistical analysis and the interview was analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings showed that the description of transformational leadership demonstrated the four dimension of transformational leadership, such as idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration. Later in this study it was found that school principals implement transformational leadership by using some ways such as building the trust, motivation, facilitation and communication. It is also found that the transformational leadership behavior of school principal of private vocational high school in Palembang has an impact to the teacher performance in teaching learning process.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out whether or not: (1) there was a significant difference in narrative reading comprehension achievement of the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang before and after they were taught by using REAP strategy, (2) there was a significant difference in reading comprehension achievement on narrative text between the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang who were taught by using REAP strategy and those who were not. The population of the study was the eighth-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang in the academic year 2015/2016 consisting of 240 students. The sample was 70 students who were divided into experimental and control group that were taken by using purposive sampling technique. To collect the data and to measure students' reading comprehension achievement, the reading comprehension test was given.The test was administered twice as a pretest and posttest. The result from paired sample t-test showed that t-obtained was higher than t-table (11.604>2.0301) at the significance level of p<0.05. It means that H01 was rejected and there was a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension achievement of experimental group. The result from independent sample t-test of the post-test in both experimental and control groups showed that there was a significant difference at the significance level of p<0.05 and t-obtained was higher than t-table (2.029>1.9955). Therefore, there was a significant difference in reading comprehension achievement between the students who were taught by using REAP strategy and those who were not.

Abstract

Abstract. In this 21st century, students who are millennials are very accustomed to using electronic media in their daily lives, therefore electronic media, such as; smartphones, laptops, computers, and many others, have taken a central role in students' daily learning activities. This study aimed to obtain information about the needs of Vocational High School students in the field of reading English based on the use of media electronic learning. This study was qualitative and quantitative study in learning materials. In order to collect data for this study, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used. The questionnaires were distributed to 33 tenth grade students from SMKN 3 Palembang's hotel accommodation study program. The semi-structured interview was conducted with the tenth Grade-English teacher. The results showed that: 1) most of the students feel motivated when learning use the media electronic, 2) the specific aspects related to the hospitality sector that need to be combined into English reading text materials are descriptions of the jobs they will do later after graduating from the school so that they can increase their knowledge and expertise by their majors. The results of this study concluded that hotel accommodation students need electronic descriptive reading materials in learning activities. Therefore, this study is also used as the preliminary study in developing the electronic descriptive reading materials for hotel accommodation program of VHS.Keywords: Needs Analysis, Hotel Accommodation, Electronic Learning, Descriptive Text, and VHS.

Abstract

Abstract. The study aimed to find out the validity, practicality, and potential effect of the developed reading materials with local culture based descriptive texts. The development research consisted of analysis, design, evaluation and revision was used. Then, formative evaluation proposed by Tessmer (1993) was also used. In order to review the product, there were 2 experts in expert review, 3 students involved in one-to-one, 9 students involved in small group which were given the reading materials and 18 students involved in field test. The questionnaires and a test were used in order to collect the data. The results showed that the developed product was valid after being evaluated in expert review which was categorized as highly valid. The product was also practical after being evaluated in one-to-one and small group which were categorized as very highly practical. Then, the reading assessment also could be categorized as effective since there were 12 students reached the minimum mastery criterion Keywords: development research, local culture, descriptive texts.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were to find out whether or not: (1) there was a significant difference in Descriptive Writing achievement after the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Indralaya Utara were taught by using internet meme picture and (2) there was a significant difference in Descriptive Writing achievement between the students who were taught by using internet meme pictures and those who were not. The samples of this study were X MIPA 1 and X MIPA 2 with the total number of 64 students. To collect the data, each group was given pre-test and post-test of writing. The data were analyzed by using Paired Sample t-test and Independent Sample t-test in SPSS version 22. The results from Paired Sample t-test showed that there was a significant difference in Descriptive Writing achievement before and after the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Indralaya Utara were taught by using Internet Meme Picture. The result from Independent Sample t-test of the post-test in both experimental and control groups showed that there was a significant difference in Descriptive Writing achievement between the students who were taught by using Internet Meme Picture and those who were not as the r-value both of Paired Sample t-test and Independent Sample t-test results were lower than 0.05 (0.000 < .05).  ABSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah: (1) ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam menulis deskriptif setelah siswa kelas sepuluh SMA Negeri 1 Indralaya Utara diajarkan dengan menggunakan Internet Meme Picture dan (2) ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam penulisan deskriptif antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan Internet Meme Picture dengan mereka yang tidak. Sampel penelitian ini adalah kelas X MIPA 1 dan X MIPA 2 dengan jumlah total 64 siswa. Untuk mengumpulkan data, setiap kelompok diberikan pre-test dan post-test penulisan. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan Paired Sample t-test dan Independent Sample t-test dengan SPSS versi 22. Hasil dari Paired Sample t-test menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam penulisan deskriptif sebelum dan sesudah siswa kelas X SMA Negeri 1 Indralaya Utara diajarkan dengan menggunakan Internet Meme Picture. Hasil Independent Sample t-test dari post-test di kedua kelompok yaitu eksperimen dan kontrol menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam prestasi penulisan deskriptif antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan Internet Meme Picture dan dengan mereka yang tidak. Abstract

This article was aimed to find out the significance average score and motivation between TBLT and Conventional Technique. Due the interpretation of this  study, it found that: (1) there was a significant difference in writing achievement between the student who taught by using TBLT and those are taught using conventional technique since it was  found  that the result was 0.00, (2) there was significant difference in writing achievement between the students who have high motivation by using TBLT and conventional teaching technique since the result was 0.005, (3) there was significant difference in writing achievement between the students who have low motivation by using TBLT and conventional teaching technique since the result was 0.002, (4) there was significant difference in writing achievement between the students who have low and high motivation by using TBLT since the significant was lower 0.02, and (5) there was an interaction effect of technique used and student’s motivation in improving writing achievement since the result of interaction effect was lower 0.006. Based on the result, the writer concluded that the result of this research was lower than the level of significant level (0,05), and TBLT and motivation gave the significant influence for student’s  narrative writing achievement since there was a significant improvement before and after taught TBLT technique.Keywords: TBLT Technique, Motivation, and Writing

Abstract

This study investigated to find out whether or not there were any significant differences of the second level cadets’ listening ability and listening attitude  using audio-visual method (video materials). By using questionnaire forty cadets were selected as the sample and equally divided into experimental and control groups. By applying pretest and posttest control group design the treatment was only given to the experimental group. The data were analyzed by using three techniques: they were the statistical analysis on measuring homogenity and normality data, independent t-test, and two-way ANOVA. Due to the research findings, it was found that (1) there was significant difference in listening ability between positive and negative attitude students who were taught by using Video materials (0.000<0.05). (2) there was significant difference in listening ability between positive and negative attitude students who were taught by using conventional technique (0.000<0.05). (3) there was significance difference in listening ability between positive and negative attitude students who were taught by using video materials and those who were taught by using conventional technique (0.000<0.05). (4) there was a significant interaction effect of Video materials and listening attitude towards the listening ability at the second level cadets of D III Lalu Lintas Angkutan Sungai Danau dan Penyeberangan (LLASDP) Palembang (0.020 < 0.05).Keywords: video materials, listening attitude, and listening ability
