Abstract

This qualitative study explores students’ perceptions and engagement in the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in English language classrooms at the senior high school level. The research focuses on uncovering how students perceive the use of PjBL, what aspects enhance their motivation and involvement—such as group collaboration, use of technology, and creativity—and what challenges they encounter, including time management, task division, and language comprehension. Five students from SMA Negeri 9 Wajo participated in in-depth interviews to share their experiences, while observations provided additional insight into classroom dynamics. The findings reveal that students generally hold positive perceptions toward PjBL, highlighting increased enthusiasm, improved English skills—especially in speaking, writing, and vocabulary—and a greater sense of ownership over their learning. Collaborative projects and authentic tasks were cited as key motivators, though students also expressed concerns about unequal participation and limited time for project completion. The study emphasizes the importance of student voice in evaluating educational strategies and offers practical suggestions from students to improve future PjBL activities.

Abstract

Politeness plays a vital role in social interaction, as it reflects cultural norms, social relationships, and the speaker’s communicative intentions. This study aims to explore and analyze the factors that influence the use of politeness strategies in both spoken and written forms of communication. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis across various communicative settings, The findings indicate that several key elements such as social status, interpersonal distance, The researcher also found the factors that influence the use of politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson’s theory. They are pay-off in 10 times and relevant circumstances in 6 times (social distance in 1 time, relative power in 5 times). Pay-off was the highest of the factor that influence the use of politeness strategies. These insights are expected to support the development of pragmatic theory and foster greater awareness of polite language use in diverse communicative contexts.

Abstract

Genre-Based Instruction (GBI) is a structured approach that scaffolds students’ writing development by explicitly teaching genre conventions and guiding them through sequenced instructional stages. This qualitative study explores cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement among high school students who have experienced GBI in their writing instruction. This study, conducted at SMAN 1 Enrekang and SMAN 2 Enrekang, employs semi-structured interviews to capture students' lived experiences and perceptions. Using thematic analysis, findings reveal that GBI enhances cognitive engagement by improving genre awareness and structural clarity in writing, while emotional engagement is fostered through increased writing confidence and motivation, particularly in collaborative Joint Construction activities. Behavioral engagement is reflected in students’ active participation, peer interaction, and deeper involvement in the writing process. However, challenges include limited vocabulary acquisition, which hindered comprehension of genre-specific conventions, and time constraints, which restricted students’ ability to internalize writing structures before transitioning to independent tasks. These findings highlight the need for curricular flexibility to accommodate a more reflective writing process, as well as technology-supported vocabulary development to enhance students’ engagement with genre-specific text. While GBI effectively cultivates writing engagement across cognitive, emotional, and behavioral domains, its success depends on instructional refinements and professional development for teachers. Additionally, supportive policy frameworks are crucial to ensuring sustainable and adaptable implementation. This study contributes to ongoing discussions on effective writing pedagogy, offering insights into optimizing GBI for diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

In an aspect of daily life that involves interactions carried out by one person with another, this can ‎be said to be natural and most likely tends to give rise to various language variations, either in the ‎form of accents or from how they convey something in the same language so that they are ‎connected to each other and understand what people want to convey. Furthermore, humans and ‎language are a unit that cannot be separated because to communicate with other humans it takes a ‎language as a tool that describes a person’s intentions and goals. This is where sociolinguistics ‎functions to learn more about the relationship between social life and society in one scope. Code ‎switching is a language variation by combining words or sentences using several languages in one ‎topic of conversation which aims to facilitate communication. Code switching itself can be applied ‎anytime and anywhere as long as it is adapted to the context. The phenomenon of code switching is ‎very common in everyday life because it can be said that it is already familiar, one of which can be ‎seen in the series “My Nerd Girl”. All the episodes in this series are pretty much shown how some ‎characters relate code switching by using two languages, namely Indonesian and English. ‎Therefore, this series can be considered to be studied in more detail.‎

Abstract

This ethnographic study examines the relationships between digital literacy and learning interactions in Indonesian EFL classes. The study seeks to elucidate the role of digital tools in mediating educational practices and interactional dynamics between educators and learners. Data were collected over six months at SMA Negeri Ternate, Indonesia, using participant observation, semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and field notes, involving five teachers and ten students. The findings suggest a triadic interactional framework, comprising learner-content, learner-instructor, and learner-learner interactions, all of which are shaped by digital integration. Students utilized multimedia resources such as YouTube and ChatGPT, promoting independence and multimodal understanding. Nonetheless, conventional assumptions of teacher authority persisted, and digital disparities frequently limited peer participation. Three cultural elements emerged: technology-enhanced instruction, enduring teacher authority, and flexible peer solidarity. The study concludes that digital literacy alters classroom dynamics, but it must be grounded in local educational and cultural norms. It necessitates culturally responsive instructional design and fair access to improve engagement and maximize the educational potential of digital literacy.

Abstract

In this study, the researcher analyzed the emotional expressions in three selected songs from Frank Ocean’s Blonde album, namely Ivy, Self-Control, and Godspeed. The research applies Parrott’s (2001) theory of emotions, which categorizes emotions into three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary. A descriptive qualitative method was used to identify the emotions conveyed in the song lyrics. The findings show that the lyrics depict various emotions. Primary emotions, such as surprise and sadness, arise from spontaneous reactions. Secondary emotions, like hope and longing, are revealed through deeper reflections. Tertiary emotions, which are more complex, reflect emotional maturity and acceptance, as seen in the lyric "I let go of my claim on you, it is a free world." This study concludes that the Blonde album not only presents simple emotional reactions but also portrays a deep and complex emotional journey. These findings provide insights into how emotions are expressed through song lyrics and can serve as a reference for further studies in music and linguistics. Keywords: Emotions, Parrott’s theory, Frank Ocean, Blonde.
