Abstract

Genre-Based Instruction (GBI) is a structured approach that scaffolds students’ writing development by explicitly teaching genre conventions and guiding them through sequenced instructional stages. This qualitative study explores cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement among high school students who have experienced GBI in their writing instruction. This study, conducted at SMAN 1 Enrekang and SMAN 2 Enrekang, employs semi-structured interviews to capture students' lived experiences and perceptions. Using thematic analysis, findings reveal that GBI enhances cognitive engagement by improving genre awareness and structural clarity in writing, while emotional engagement is fostered through increased writing confidence and motivation, particularly in collaborative Joint Construction activities. Behavioral engagement is reflected in students’ active participation, peer interaction, and deeper involvement in the writing process. However, challenges include limited vocabulary acquisition, which hindered comprehension of genre-specific conventions, and time constraints, which restricted students’ ability to internalize writing structures before transitioning to independent tasks. These findings highlight the need for curricular flexibility to accommodate a more reflective writing process, as well as technology-supported vocabulary development to enhance students’ engagement with genre-specific text. While GBI effectively cultivates writing engagement across cognitive, emotional, and behavioral domains, its success depends on instructional refinements and professional development for teachers. Additionally, supportive policy frameworks are crucial to ensuring sustainable and adaptable implementation. This study contributes to ongoing discussions on effective writing pedagogy, offering insights into optimizing GBI for diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

The development of effective English writing skills is a persistent challenge for learners, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, where cognitive and linguistic demands often overwhelm students. This study examines the role of Genre-Based Instruction (GBI) in addressing challenges by exploring its interaction with cognitive processes on writing proficiency. Specifically, the research explores how GBI contributes to students’ understanding of genre structures, promotes cognitive engagement in planning and organizing writing, and cultivates critical thinking. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews involving 20 secondary school students. The results highlighted how GBI facilitated students' understanding of genre-specific conventions, enabling them to create texts with greater cohesion and coherence. Students also reported that the structured steps inherent in GBI reduced cognitive load and enhanced their ability to plan and organize ideas systematically. Furthermore, the study highlighted GBI’s role in motivating students by providing clear guidance and relevant content, which increased their confidence and enthusiasm for writing tasks. These findings underscore the potential of GBI to address the multifaceted challenges of writing by integrating cognitive and pedagogical strategies, offering actionable insights for educators and curriculum designers.

Abstract

Abstract. Many students feel less self-efficacy in their writing abilities, especially in producing writing that meets academic standards. Bad previous experiences often influence one's approach to writing academic assignments. As a result, students tend to feel anxious, demotivated, or even experience writer's block, which can delay their progress on the final research report. This study examines the impact of artificial intelligence tools on students’ self-efficacy in writing their final research report. This research employed a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews and documentation analysis involving six undergraduate students who completed their final research report using artificial intelligence tools. Findings suggest that utilizing artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and DeepL, in the writing of the final research report can enhance students’ self-efficacy. The conclusion affirms that AI tools not only impacts the quality of the writing produced as the medium in the digital era and education, but also the internal processes that shape students' self-efficacy and behaviors in academic writing. Keywords: Self-Efficacy; Artificial Intelligence; Undergraduate Students; Influences; Final Research Report

Abstract

This qualitative study explores students’ perceptions and engagement in the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in English language classrooms at the senior high school level. The research focuses on uncovering how students perceive the use of PjBL, what aspects enhance their motivation and involvement—such as group collaboration, use of technology, and creativity—and what challenges they encounter, including time management, task division, and language comprehension. Five students from SMA Negeri 9 Wajo participated in in-depth interviews to share their experiences, while observations provided additional insight into classroom dynamics. The findings reveal that students generally hold positive perceptions toward PjBL, highlighting increased enthusiasm, improved English skills—especially in speaking, writing, and vocabulary—and a greater sense of ownership over their learning. Collaborative projects and authentic tasks were cited as key motivators, though students also expressed concerns about unequal participation and limited time for project completion. The study emphasizes the importance of student voice in evaluating educational strategies and offers practical suggestions from students to improve future PjBL activities.
