Abstract

Background: Earthquakes impose both physical injuries and psychological disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of exercise therapy in preventing and managing physical and psychological trauma among populations in these regions. Methods: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (registration number: CRD420251130734) and followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest (January 2014–August 2025) using MeSH terms and Boolean operators. Eligible studies included the randomized control trial (RCT), quasi-experimental, cohort, and controlled field trials examining exercise interventions for trauma-related outcomes in earthquake settings. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed quality using the PEDro scale. Results: Nine studies met the criteria, covering adolescents, older adults, disaster survivors, and refugees. Interventions ranged from yoga and aerobic training to strengthening and community-based rehabilitation. Exercise therapy consistently improved physical (pain, mobility, function) and psychological outcomes (PTSD, anxiety, depression), but methodological flaws, lack of blinding, concealed allocation, and intention-to-treat analysis limited the evidence to moderate quality. Conclusion: Exercise therapy supports both physical recovery and psychological resilience in earthquake-affected populations, but more high-quality RCTs with standardized protocols are needed to strengthen evidence and inform its integration into disaster management.

Abstract

Abstract

Flood disasters have substantial psychosocial impacts on school-aged children, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Resilience and social support are critical protective factors that facilitate psychological recovery in this vulnerable group. This study aimed to examine the relationship between psychological impacts (depression, anxiety, PTSD), resilience, and social support among children affected by flooding.: A quantitative analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 60 children aged 6–12 years in Taman Kintamani Housing, Bekasi, using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using validated instruments: the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC), the Chinese version of the State Anxiety Scale for Children (CSAS-C), and the PTSD Checklist. Analyses included univariate, bivariate (Chi-square), and multivariate (multiple logistic regression) tests. Most respondents were aged 10–12 years (73.3%) and male (53.3%). Significant associations were found between depression, anxiety, and PTSD with resilience (p = 0.018; p = 0.030; p = 0.013) and social support (p = 0.023; p = 0.036; p = 0.022). Children without depression were 4.48 times more likely to demonstrate high resilience (p = 0.032). Those with mild anxiety were nearly six times more likely to show high resilience compared to those with moderate/severe anxiety (p = 0.014). Similarly, children with mild PTSD were 5.25 times more likely to report high resilience (p = 0.015). Although not statistically significant, children aged 10–12 years tended to have higher resilience (OR = 3.07, p = 0.061), suggesting clinical relevance. Higher levels of depression, anxiety, and PTSD were associated with lower resilience and reduced social support among school-aged children after flooding. These findings highlight the importance of community-based psychosocial interventions aimed at strengthening coping strategies, enhancing social support, and empowering families to promote resilience and accelerate recovery in disaster-affected children.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that requires long-term care and treatment. The treatment requires caregivers who may come from the family. A caregiver's daily tasks can be overwhelming, leading to psychosocial problems. This study aims to identify the effectiveness of psychosocial adaptation interventions in overcoming psychosocial problems in family caregivers of schizophrenic patients. This study used a systematic review approach. The literature search was sourced from five databases: Wiley Online Library, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, EMBASE, and Sage Journals. The keywords used were family caregiver, schizophrenia patient, psychosocial adaptation, and psychosocial problem. The results of a literature search obtained 448 articles then were screened with the criteria of articles published in 2018-2023, open access, full-text articles, original articles with a randomized controlled trial study design, discussing psychosocial adaptation interventions and psychosocial problems in schizophrenic family caregivers, and English. The results of the article screening obtained six articles, and critical appraisal was carried out using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Randomized Controlled Trials. All of them were included in grade A ( 90%). Based on the results, psychosocial adaptation interventions effectively dealt with family caregivers' psychosocial problems, including signs of depression, anxiety, stress, self-stigma, psychological burden, emotions, feelings of worthlessness, and powerlessness. Therefore, psychosocial adaptation interventions for schizophrenia family caregivers could be conducted comprehensively by telephone or spiritual approach, involving direct contact with patients, families, and communities. With optimal involvement by family caregivers by focusing on positive aspects and goals that the family caregiver wants to achieve, the role of accompanying the care and treatment of schizophrenic patients can be achieved.

Abstract

One of the domains of quality of life for people living with HIV (PLWH) is independence, which is how PLWH undergo antiretroviral therapy (ARV) adherently. PLWHA face various problems, including social problems such as stigma, ostracization, and discrimination. Social stigma can be a form of chronic stress for HIV/AIDS patients. One of the approaches used to improve intervention outcomes for PLWH is peer support. This study was conducted to explore in-depth the experiences of peer supporters in assisting PLHIV undergoing ARV therapy. This study was a qualitative research with a descriptive qualitative approach. Eight peer supporters who are members of peer support groups in Sorong City and Sorong Regency, and have been actively providing support to PLHIV for at least one year were purposively selected for this study. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews using a semi-structured interview guide. Data was collected over a period of one month, and analyzed thematically. Three main themes were generated, namely the benefits of peer support for ODHIV, barriers to the implementation of peer support, and efforts to overcome barriers. The conclusion of this study is that the support provided to ODHIV through peer supporters has a good impact on the achievement of care for ODHIV. The peer support program can be integrated with nursing programs and interventions for PLHIV. Although there are obstacles in its implementation, it can be resolved with the cooperation of various parties.

Abstract

Natural and non-natural disasters can cause long-term psychological impacts on affected individuals, including the emergence of post-traumatic stress disorder. However, some victims actually experience positive changes known as post-traumatic growth (PTG), which is psychological growth that occurs after facing a traumatic event. PTG does not form automatically, but is influenced by various factors, one of which is social support. Effective social support can strengthen resilience, provide a sense of security, and facilitate the reinterpretation of the trauma experienced. Objective to identify and synthesize scientific evidence regarding the relationship between social support and PTG in disaster victims.Method: This study used a systematic review design, with article searches conducted through three main databases: PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus. The keywords used were: “post-traumatic growth” OR “PTG” AND “social support” AND “disaster” OR “natural disaster” OR “earthquake” OR “flood” OR “tsunami”. Inclusion criteria included original research articles published in English between 2015–2025 and explicitly discussing the relationship between social support and PTG in disaster victim populations. Data were extracted manually using a table that included the author, purpose, design, sample, location, instrument, and results of the study. Data analysis was conducted descriptively qualitatively with a thematic analysis approach. A total of 10 articles that met the inclusion criteria were successfully identified and analyzed. The results of the study showed that social support consistently plays a role in encouraging the occurrence of PTG through various mechanisms: as a direct predictor, a mediator between psychological factors (such as resilience and survivor guilt), and as a moderator of the relationship between psychopathological symptoms and PTG. Six main themes were found in the thematic analysis: the direct role of social support, psychological mediation, moderating function on depression and anxiety, strengthening resilience, diversity of support sources, and vicarious PTG experiences. PTG does not solely depend on individual characteristics, but is also influenced by the extent to which they are connected to a supportive social environment. Therefore, nursing practice needs to integrate aspects of social support in disaster victim care, either through family, community, or professional service approaches.
