Abstract

This research aims to produce a Learning Trajectory Based Instruction (LTBI) that can help the ninth grade students understand the concept of congruence of the two-dimensional shape by examining Lawang Sewu as one of Central Java historical buildings. LTBI is defined as a teaching and learning trajectory that uses Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) for instructional decisions. The present research uses the design research developed by Gravemeijer and Cobb that consists of three phases; the preliminary design, design of the experiment (pilot experiment and teaching experiment), and  retrospective analysis. In this study, a series of learning activities is designed and developed based on the Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach. This research produced LTBI that consists of a series of learning processes embodied in three activities of (1) identifying and finding the properties which shapes are congruent shapes by watching Lawang Sewu video, (2) proofing two shapes are congruent through transformation (translation and rotation), and (3) solving problem related to the congruence of two-dimensional shape. The activity can help to improve the students’ understanding of the concept of congruence. Nevertheless, the present study is limited to the first stage of Gravemeijer and Cobb’s design research, namely preliminary design.

Abstract

Lines and angles are essential for students because of geometry and its many applications in daily life. However, there are still many students who have difficulty grasping the material. Therefore, it is necessary to design learning using the right approach, context, and media. This study aims to produce a learning trajectory that can assist students in understanding the concept of lines and angles, maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of learning, create meaningful learning, and motivate student learning. This study used the Joglo Traditional House context as a starting point and the design research method developed by Gravemeijer and Cobb with three main steps: preparing for the experiment, designing the experiment (pilot experiment and teaching experiment), and retrospective analysis. However, in design experiment step is limited to the pilot experiment. In this study, all activities were designed based on Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education. It involves six 7th-grade students from one of the junior high schools at Juwana Resident with three different abilities, namely two students for each level with high, moderate, and low ability. The learning trajectory generated in this study consists of a series of learning processes in four activities that can be used to develop local instructional theories and develop designs for further activities. Those are observing Joglo traditional house video for understanding lines and angles concepts, deducing line positions, discovering the angles' properties on parallel lines intersected by other lines, and solving lines and angles problems.

Abstract

Abstract

Students of Mathematics education often struggle with integration problem, but yet the root of the problem related to critical thinking is rarely investigated. This article reports research where the first-year students of Mathematics Education of PGRI University Semarang were given an integral problem, then individually they were interviewed related to the answer they have made. The findings of students' difficulties in working on integration problem were confirmed through several questions in the interview which aimed to uncover their critical thinking process related to concepts, procedures, and problem solving. This study shows that student difficulties in Integration by disc method such as failure in identifying radius of a rotary object, specify partition, and integration bounds are closely related to their failure to think critically related to concept, skills, and problem solving aspects of critical thinking.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a learning trajectory by utilizing the local wisdom of the Megono Gunungan tradition to help students grasp the sphere's notion. This research applied the approach of the Indonesian Realistic Mathematical Approach (PMRI). Ninth-grade students at SMP 38 Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, were the subjects of this study. The methodology used is based on Graveimeijer and Cobb's three steps of design research: preliminary design, design experiment, and retrospective analysis. Numerous data collection methods were used, involving video, photography, the outcome of students' worksheets, and student interviews. The learning trajectory comprises four activities: identifying sphere components using the Megono Gunungan tradition interactive video context, discovering the sphere surfaces area using orange fruit, finding the sphere's volume through rice media, and solving problems of the sphere. This study's findings signify that the utilization of the Megono Gunungan tradition context could encourage learners to recognize the concept of the sphere through a sequence of designed activities.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe errors done by students in solving HOTS typed linear equation of two variables problem seen from the cognitive style in a Covid-19 pandemic era. This research uses a qualitative approach. Research subjects consist of 4 students selected among 31 students from class IX Junior High School 1 Petarukan, grouped into two students with cognitive style field-dependent (FD) and two students with cognitive style field-independent (FI). Subjects cognitive style was determined by Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) score, while errors in problem-solving were determined through TKPS and interviews. Field-dependent subjects tend to make errors in transformation and encoding with low or fair fallacy rate. On the other side, field-independent subjects tend to make errors in understanding the problems with low fallacy rate. The causes of errors made by field-dependent subjects are not being able to make complete mathematical models and not showing what they had searched. Meanwhile, field-independent subjects were incapable of making sketches perfectly. Other researchers' recommendation explains only errors in reading, transformation, processing capability, and encoding of students with cognitive style FD and FI. In this context, there are still a lot of other errors done by students. Therefore, the next researcher needs to conduct further research with better execution.
