Abstract

Temephos is extensively employed currently to eliminate Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae, thus preventing the spread of dengue fever. Raising the level of temephos application can lead to health issues for individuals and long-term detrimental impacts on the environment. This research aims to demonstrate that Z. purpureum Rosc. essential oil effective in eliminating more than 70% of Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae. Z. purpureum Rosc.essential oil was diluted with Tween 80 to achieve various concentrations, namely 12.5 μg/mL, 25 μg/mL, 50 μg/mL, and 100 μg/mL. A positive control was established using temephos at a concentration of 0.012 mg/L, while a negative control was prepared using clean water. The larvae were subjected to these treatments for a duration of 48 hours, with three repetitions conducted. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis Test that shows a significant difference between treatment groups, with a p value <0.05. A concentration of 12.5 μg/mL of Z. purpureum Rosc. essential oil was found to effectively eliminate 76.67% of Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae. A concentration of 25 μg/mL of Z. purpureum Rosc. essential oil was found to effectively eliminate 86.67% of Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae. A concentration of 50 μg/mL of Z. purpureum Rosc. essential oil was found to effectively eliminate 96.67% of Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae. A concentration of 100 μg/mL of Z. purpureum Rosc. essential oil was found to effectively eliminate 100% of Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae. The overall findings show that more than 70% of Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae are effectively killed by Z. purpureum Rosc. essential oil at a concentration of 12.5 μg/mL.

Abstract

Coal plays a crucial role in Indonesia’s foreign exchange and East Kalimantan’s revenue sharing, yet its environmental impacts, including soil acidification, raises concerns. Reclamation measures involve revegetation with pioneer plants such as Macaranga sp., known for their medicinal properties. However, the pharmacological properties of these plants are influenced by secondary metabolites, which depend on soil parameters such as pH and nutrient levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity, secondary metabolites, and antioxidant activities of Macaranga tanarius leaf extracts from post-coal mining area (MTPCMA) and non-mining area (MTNMA) alongside soil parameters. Acute toxicity of M. tanarius leaf extracts and soils were assessed using the brine shrimp lethality test (BSLT). Phytochemical screening was done using thin-layer chromatography (TLC), determining total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid content (TFC). The DPPH radical scavenging assay was used to assess the antioxidant activity. A comparative analysis between MTPCMA and MTNMA was conducted using Student t-test. The data showed no significant difference in toxicity between MTPCMA and MTNMA leaf extracts (LC50 of 100–1000 µg/mL) (p=0.062), and soils from both areas were non-toxic (LC50 of >1000 µg/mL). Although heavy metal concentrations were higher in PCMA than in NMA soil (p<0.001), secondary metabolite compounds and TFC in both extracts were not significantly different (p=0.076). Both extracts contained flavonoids and polyphenols with antioxidant activity and terpenoids without antioxidant activities. The DPPH radical scavenging test suggested insignificant antioxidant activity between MTPCMA and MTNMA extracts (p=0.237). In conclusion, non-toxic soils in post-mining land and insignificant differences between MTPCMA and MTNMA extracts suggest good soil nutrient availability, highlighting the success of land recovery after 10 years of revegetation with M. tanarius.

Abstract

Hipertensi atau penyakit tekanan darah tinggi adalah kondisi medis yang dapat meningkatkan risiko penyakit kardiovaskular dan kerusakan organ target seperti penyakit jantung koroner, stroke, gagal ginjal, dan sebagainya. Kondisi hipertensi berkaitan dengan angka kematian yang tinggi di seluruh dunia. Sebagian besar pasien hipertensi memerlukan obat antihipertensi untuk mencapai target tekanan darah yang diinginkan, dengan profil keamanan yang baik dan biaya yang terjangkau. Oleh karena itu pengembangan obat herbal yang potensial untuk penanganan hipertensi dapat menjadi salah satu strategi yang dapat diupayakan untuk meningkatkan keberhasilan pengobatan hipertensi. Salah satu bahan alam yang mendapat perhatian adalah daun zaitun (Olea europaea L.). Kandungan utama dari daun zaitun antara lain adalah oleuropein yang telah diketahui memiliki efek sebagai penurun tekanan darah. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian preklinik dan uji klinik, ekstrak daun zaitun memiliki potensi untuk membantu mengendalikan tekanan darah sehingga akan menjadi pilihan terapi yang bermanfaat dalam tata laksana kasus hipertensi. Ekstrak daun zaitun juga terbukti dapat membantu memperbaiki profil lipid dengan profil keamanan yang baik.

Abstract

Madu Heterotrigona itama dikenal sebagai alternatif dalam pengobatan yang sering dijumpai dengan langsung dikonsumsi. Kemampuan madu dalam menghambat aktivitas bakteri karena mengandung senyawa antiseptik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi potensi  madu lebah tanpa sengat (kelulut) Heterotrigona itama yang diternakkan pada areal tumbuhan kaliandra dalam menghambat aktivitas bakteri Escherichia coli selama 6 bulan pengamatan (Oktober 2022 – Maret 2023). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode difusi agar untuk menguji sifat antibakteri madu. Prosedur ini meliputi penuangan media nutrient agar ke cawan petri dan dibiarkan mengering. Kemudian, dibuat lubang pada media dan ditambahkan suspensi bakteri. Dilakukan pengujian pada sampel secara intensif selama enam bulan. Kloramfenikol digunakan sebagai kontrol positif dan aquades sebagai kontrol negatif. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa  madu lebah tanpa sengat Heterotrigona itama efektif dalam menghambat pertumbuhan  bakteri Escherichia coli. Sifat antibakteri madu dipengaruhi oleh efek senyawa bioaktif yang dominan.

Abstract

Background: Inflammation is a normal process in response to injury, but causes problems for the patient, including the appearance of pain, swelling, or fever. Anti-inflammatory agents generally used for those conditions, have several side effects to patients. Purpose: The objective of this research was to find alternative anti-inflammatory agents, especially from natural sources. Eleutherine bulbosa (Mill.) Urb. knew as "Bawang Dayak” belong to family Iridaceae is one of the natural sources for anti-inflammatory agents. This plant is known as traditional medicine in East Kalimantan and used as material in this research. Method: The experimental method of anti-inflammatory measurement using membrane stabilization activity for E. Bulbosa ethanol bulbs extracts. Result: The results showed that significant differences of EC50(p < 0.05) were achieved between indomethacin (26.39 ± 2.91) as the positive control with E. Bulbosa (52.87 ± 2.29). EC50 of E. bulbosa showed the potential anti-inflammatory activities with similar effectiveness to half indomethacin concentration. Conclusion: It could be concluded that E. bulbosa could be further developed as a new natural source of the anti-inflammatory agents.

Abstract

Asma merupakan penyakit inflamasi kronik saluran nafas yang ditandai dengan terjadinya hiperesponsif saluran nafas dan penyempitan saluran nafas secara reversibel. Asma hingga kini masih merupakan masalah kesehatan utama di dunia. Pemberian obat-obatan anti asma merupakan penatalaksanaan penyakit tersebut. Namun demikian terdapat masalah efek samping obat dan masalah biaya yang dikeluarkan untuk pembelian obat tersebut, apalagi asma merupakan penyakit kronis yang memerlukan pengobatan jangka panjang. Dengan demikian maka perlu pengembangan obat antiasma berbasis tumbuhan obat dengan biaya yang lebih terjangkau dan efek samping yang lebih sedikit. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menguji potensi ekstrak etanol Centella asiatica (L.) Urb. yang secara tradisional digunakan etnis Dayak sebagai obat batuk. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk melihat aktivitas trakeospasmolitik ekstrak etanol C. asiatica pada organ terpisah trakea marmut untuk melihat efek antiasma. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ekstrak C. asiatica memiliki aktivitas trakeospasmolitik yang signifikan jika dibandingkan dengan kontrol negatif. Meskipun nilai E maks C. asiatica lebih rendah daripada aminofilin, namun nilai EC50 tidak jauh berbeda dengan aminofilin sebagai kontrol positif. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah ekstrak etanol C. asiatica memiliki efek antiasma berdasarkan aktivitas trakeospasmolitiknya. Kata kunci: Centella asiatica, spasmolitik, organ terpisah trakea

Abstract

Pain due to smooth muscle stiffness can occur in various circumstances of patients, ranging from normal circumstances such as menstrual pain, to a pathological condition of gastrointestinal infections. To overcome the pain it can be given medication to reduce muscle stiffness as spasmolytics, but there are side effects of the drug. Thus, the need for developing new spasmolytics drugs based on medicinal herbs with fewer side effects. This study was conducted to examine the potential of rhizome extract of jeringau (Acorus calamus L.) that is traditionally used by Dayak tribe to heal upset stomach. Spasmolytic activity of plant extracts tested with isolates organ methods of guinea pig ileum induced by histamine. Result of the study showed 0.3 mg/ml A. calamus rhizomes extract could decrease ileum contraction better than papaverine 0.03 mg/ml (p=0.00). The conclusion of this study is rhizome extract of jeringau (A. calamus) has the potential to be used as spasmolytics in treatment of health problems caused by smooth muscle contraction

Abstract

Diare hingga kini masih merupakan masalah kesehatan utama di Indonesia. Pemberian antibiotik merupakan salah satu upaya penatalaksanaan diare, namun belakangan terkendala masalah adanya resistensi terhadap antibiotik. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, maka upaya pencarian sumber antimikroba baru berbasis tumbuhan obat perlu dilakukan. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menguji potensi ekstrak daun karamunting (Melastoma malabathricum L.) yang secara tradisional digunakan etnis Dayak sebagai obat diare. Aktivitas antimikroba ekstrak tumbuhan diuji terhadap 5 bakteri standar; Escherichia coli ATCC 35128, Shigella sonnei ATCC 25931, Campylobacter jejuni ATCC 33291, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442, dan Enterobacter cloacae ATCC13047. Pengukuran aktivitas antimikroba dilakukan dengan disc diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) dan pengukuran minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ekstrak daun M. malabathricum dapat menghambat pertumbuhan seluruh bakteri uji, dengan diameter zona hambat sebesar 12,3-16 mm dan MIC sebesar 2,3-13,3 mg/ml. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah ekstrak daun M. malabathricum berpotensi sebagai antidiare berdasarkan aktivitas antimikrobanya.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major health problem throughout the world, including Indonesia. The use of traditional medicine as part of the treatment of hypertension is increasing in the last decade. This is due to several factors, especially traditional medicine is a cheaper alternative with fewer undesirable side effects. This study tried to look at the pattern of use of natural medicine as a complementary therapy in hypertensive patients at the health center. The study is a descriptive study conducted in Puskesmas Sempaja Samarinda in the period September 2016, interviewing 62 hypertension patients with the use of natural medicine. The results showed 70.9% of patients with hypertension in the health center also uses natural medicines. All patients using herbal medicine which in theory is proven to lower blood pressure. However, there is no natural medicines used include standardized herbal medicine or phytopharmacy. Only 15.2% of patients using herbal medicine in accordance with the criteria BPOM regulation on herbal medicine. For conclusions, this study shows the patients still need to be educated for the use of natural medicine in the management of hypertension.

Abstract

Infeksi nosokomial merupakan masalah kesehatan utama di Indonesia, hal ini terutama disebabkan adanya resistensi terhadap antibiotik. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, maka upaya pencarian sumber antimikroba baru berbasis tumbuhan obat perlu dilakukan. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menguji potensi ekstrak daun Caesalpinia sumatrana Roxb. yang secara tradisional digunakan etnis Dayak sebagai obat luka dan sakit kulit. Analisis bioautografi ekstrak tumbuhan dilakukan dengan kromatografi lapis tipis (KLT), terhadap Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus dan Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Hasil penelitian pada ekstrak C. sumatrana ditemukan golongan senyawa mengandung gula memiliki potensi aktivitas antimikroba terhadap keempat bakteri; senyawa golongan alkaloid memiliki potensi aktivitas antimikroba terhadap S. aureus dan MRSA; senyawa golongan terpen-steroid memiliki potensi aktivitas antimikroba terhadap P. mirabilis, S. aureus dan MRSA; dan senyawa golongan flavonoid memiliki potensi aktivitas anti mikroba terhadap S. aureus. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah hasil metabolit sekunder ekstrak daun C. sumatrana dapat menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri penyebab infeksi nosokomial.
