Abstract

Inflammation is a normal process in the human body as a response to injury from the healing process. Meanwhile, chronic inflammation will cause new health problems to patients. Anti-inflammatory agents generally used for those conditions, have several side effects to patients. The objective of this research was to find alternative anti-inflammatory agents, especially from natural sources. Vernonia amygdalina Delile knew locally as “Daun Bismillah” belong to family Apiaceae is one of those potential natural sources for alternative anti-inflammatory agents. This plant is known as traditional medicine and used as material in this research. The experimental method of in vitro anti-inflammatory measurement using membrane stabilization activity for ethanol extracts of V. amygdalina leaves. The results showed that significant differences of EC50 (p<0.05) were achieved between indomethacin as the positive control with V. amygdalina leaves extracts for concentration 1% and 10%. EC50 of leaves ethanol extract of V. amygdalina showed the potential anti-inflammatory activities. It could be concluded that V. amygdalina leaves ethanol extracts to have anti-inflammatory activities, which could be further developed as a new natural source of the anti-inflammatory agents.

Abstract

The volume of internal organs, including pancreas, show potential health problems. Several medical conditions are associated with the volume of the pancreas. The study aimed to determine the pancreatic volumes using a computed tomography (CT) scan in normal Indonesian adults and to determine whether the age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) influence the measurement of pancreatic volumes. The study was conducted by 119 people aged between 20-77 years old. Pancreatic volume measurement was performed using the summation of area technique. Statistical analyzes used independent t-test and Pearson correlation test. The study showed a significant difference of pancreatic volumes between normoweight and overweight individuals with p=0.041 (p<0.05). The results showed a significant difference of pancreatic volumes between male and female with p=0.020 (p<0.05). The results showed a significant correlation between pancreatic volumes and age p=0.004 (p<0.05). These findings suggest that the change in pancreas volume with age, sex, and BMI is comparable among different ethnicities, which is also in line with other studies.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) poses significant public health concerns in Indonesia, primarily transmitted through Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Between January-November 2024, 70 DHF cases (average 6/month) were reported at Puskesmas Juanda that indicates the necessity for targeted interventions, such as ovitrap usage, to control dengue transmission in vulnerable areas. This cross-sectional observational study aimed to identify Aedes sp. larvae in ovitraps in Gunung Kelua, Samarinda.  The data were obtained from primary data by employing 40 ovitraps indoors and outdoors, picked on day-7 then examined under the microscope, and the secondary data from the 2024 DHF case reports in Puskesmas Juanda. The results showed that 73 (85.88%) Aedes sp. larvae in DHF patients’houses and 12 (14.12%) in non-DHF houses, predominantly in RT 17. Larvae were mostly found outdoors. No Aedes sp. eggs or non-Aedes larvae were detected. The study concludes that a total of 73 (85.88%) Aedes sp. larvae were found in the homes of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients, 12 (14.12%) Aedes sp. larvae were discovered in non-DHF patients' homes. The highest number of Aedes sp. larvae in both DHF and non-DHF patients' homes were in RT 17. No Aedes sp. eggs were found in ovitraps. No eggs or larvae of other mosquito species besides Aedes sp. were detected.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Honey and propolis from stingless bees have been reported to promote wound healing due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and moisturizing activities. However, variations in compounds and biological activities of these products can arise due to geographical and bee origin differences. This study aimed to investigate the wound healing potential of stingless bee honey and propolis from East Kalimantan in an acute wound animal model. Honey and propolis from stingless bees have been reported to promote wound healing due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and moisturizing activities. However, variation of compounds and biological activities of these products can arise due to geographical and bee origin differences. This study aimed to investigate the wound healing potential of stingless bee honey and propolis from East Kalimantan in acute wound animal model. A post-test only control group design was employed in this study. Fifteen Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups, i.e., a control receiving tulle and treatment groups receiving stingless bee honey and propolis, respectively. Wound healing activity was evaluated from wound diameter changes and histological evaluations following hole punch wound. Kruskal Wallis test results showed no significant changes in the proliferation phase of wound healing, as reflected by the diameter changes (p = 0.989), the rate of histopathological re-epithelization (p = 0.730) as well as number of fibroblasts (p = 0.779), collagen (p = 0.779), and neovascularization (p = 0.756) among the groups. Honey and propolis from stingless bees have the potential to treat acute wounds in the proliferation phase where their wound healing properties are equivalent to tulle. Keywords: Acute Wound, Stingless Bee, Honey, Propolis.
