Abstract

Low birth weight (LBW) infants represent the second leading cause of neonatal mortality in Indonesia. These infants require intensive care after hospital discharge but are often readmitted due to dehydration, fever, respiratory distress, diarrhea, and vomiting conditions linked to families' inadequate preparedness for home care. Nurses play a critical role in LBW care, delivering promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services through a nursing process that addresses individuals, families, and groups. Enhancing nursing performance in LBW care necessitates the support of health workers and cadres. This support is best implemented through maternal and child health programs focused on preparation, implementation, assistance, monitoring, and evaluation for families managing low birth weight infants. Method: This study employed a descriptive quantitative design, targeting nurses who had managed low birth weight (LBW) infants in the Agricultural Health Center (Puskesmas) Ajung, Sumbersari, Rambipuji, Panti, and Kalisat. A total of 68 nurses were sampled using total sampling with a cross-sectional approach, utilizing a modified Multisource Feedback (MSF) Questionnaire as the research instrument. Results Respondents were aged 20-30 years (13.2%), 31-40 years (42.6%), 41-50 years (33.8%), and >51 years (10.3%). Most held a diploma (69.1%), while 30.9% had a bachelor's degree in nursing (News). Nurse performance in managing LBW infants and home visits was rated good in 63.2% of cases, low in 19.1%, and moderate in 17.6%. Most respondents were aged 31-40 years and held a diploma in nursing. Based on frequency and percentage distribution, 63.2% of nurses performed well.

Abstract

Background: This study investigates Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in expecting mothers, a condition arising from prolonged inadequate energy and protein intake. Untreated CED poses health risks for both mothers and their unborn babies, including miscarriage, premature birth, birth defects, low birth weight (LBW), and potentially stunting the child's growth. Despite existing goals, the incidence of CED in pregnant women remains above the target of 17.3%. Women with a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) less than 23.5 cm are considered at high risk. This research aims to identify factors contributing to the prevalence of CED among pregnant women in the Central Java and East Java regions. Methods: This study employs a mixed-methods approach, specifically a sequential explanatory design. A sample sized group of 124 participants was selected using simple random sampling. Questionnaires were distributed to healthcare facilities.  In-depth interviews were subsequently conducted to delve deeper into the causes of CED and existing efforts to address it within the chosen health centers.  Results: The final multivariate analysis revealed a significant association (p-value < 0.05) between CED in pregnant women and the following factors: income (p-value=0.018, OR=3), knowledge about CED (p-value=0.028, OR=2.7), dietary habit (p-value=0.015, OR=3.4), and food intake (p-value=0.007, OR=4). Conclusion: Food intake is a more dominant variable in relation to CED in pregnant women. Health workers are encouraged to continue enhancing health promotion efforts regarding nutritional intake for pregnant women and their families. In addition, community health centers should consistently support the provision of supplementary feeding programs for pregnant women through regular monitoring.

Abstract

One of the worldwide health concerns is nutrition. Parenting is the practice of childcare that occurs in the household through the provision of food, health care, and other resources for child survival, development, and growth. This study aims to analyze the relationship between maternal parenting and feeding patterns in stunted children in the Sumberjambe Health Center working area, Jember Regency. This study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional study design. The number of respondents was 94, who were recruited with a random sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire. The maternal parenting variables mostly have good parenting patterns, majority in toddlers aged 13-36 months, with male gender, mostly are not working mothers, and majority age 21-35 years with 2 children, the last education is elementary school, the number of family members is 5 people, and feeding patterns mostly have inappropriate patterns. The correlation between maternal parenting and feeding patterns was statistically significant (p = 0.0001, r = -0.577). The results showed that there was a significant correlation between maternal parenting and feeding patterns. Therefore, further information and education regarding maternal parenting and feeding patterns in stunted children are needed to prevent stunting.

Abstract

Low birth weight babies (LBW) in agricultural and coastal areas have different health problems thus possibly having different care needs. Inappropriate promotion of child health, especially LBW, in both clinical and community service settings can increase morbidity and mortality rates. The purpose of this study was to identify the determinants of LBW babies care needs based on family perspectives in coastal and agricultural areas. This cross-sectional observational study was conducted in June 2023 using a questionnaire to identify the determinants of LBW’s babies care. The population of this study was children and mothers in coastal and agricultural areas. Multistage random cluster sampling with the G*Power application obtained 193 participants per region, resulting in a total sample of 386. Data were analyzed using difference in means between two regions. The results showed that agricultural regions had higher mean on LBW care, parental stress, and family empowerment. Coastal areas had higher mean scores on quality of life, maternal confidence, and food diversity practices. There was a significant difference between coastal and agricultural areas on the determinants of LBW’babies care between coastal and agricultural areas, especially on the variables of parental quality of life (p=0.000), parenting stress (p=0.029), maternal confidence (p-0.000) and family empowerment (p = 0.000). Optimizing health promotion by pediatric nurses in the scope of hospital and community settings can be achieved by empowering families and paying attention to parenting stress, maternal confidence, and parents' quality of life.

Abstract

Film, as a medium of visual art, holds the power to reflect complex social and emotional realities. This study explores the representation of trauma and sacrifice in Sayap-Sayap Patah 2, a sequel that delves into the personal struggles of Indonesian police officers. The main focus of this research is how narrative and visual elements portray the psychological pressure, loss, and moral dilemmas faced by law enforcement personnel. Using a qualitative approach through narrative and visual analysis, I examine key scenes that highlight the human side of the characters. This study also investigates how such representation can foster audience empathy toward police officers, especially within the cultural and social context of Indonesia, where the police institution often carries public stigma. The findings are expected to provide new insights into the role of cinema in shaping public perception and contribute to the broader discourse in visual culture studies, media communication, and social psychology. This research also emphasizes the importance of film as a space for collective reflection and as a medium that bridges the gap between institutional narratives and individual experiences. Keywords: audience empathy, Indonesian film, law enforcement, sacrifice, trauma, visual representation.

Abstract

Introduction: Low birth weight (LBW) infants are vulnerable to health problems that impact growth and development. However, mothers as primary caregivers may not be able to provide care optimally. Factors associated with maternal characteristics need to be analyzed to determine pediatric nursing interventions to improve LBW infant care. This study aims to analyze factors associated with the nutritional status of Low-Birth-Weight Infants (1-12 months) based on maternal characteristics in agricultural areas of Jember Regency. Methods: The cross-sectional design study was conducted among infant and mother pairs by measuring nutritional status (Weight-for-Age) and distributing questionnaires on maternal characteristics such as age, education, parity, occupation, and responsive caregiving. Total sampling was collected in one of the agricultural areas of Jember that had a high LBW birthrate, resulting in 89 infant-mother pairs with a history of low-birth-weight births. Data collection on nutritional status and maternal demographics was obtained from the Maternal and Child Health Book, while responsive caregiving data was collected from questionnaires to mothers. The Spearman’s rank test analyzed the relationship between infant nutritional status and maternal characteristics. Results: The majority of infants had a normal nutritional status (88%). The characteristics of mothers are mostly aged in early adulthood (95.6%), multiparous (62.9%), elementary school educated (37.1%), not working (87.6%), and responsive caregiving as low as almost as high (50.6%; 49.4%). The results of the study showed that mothers' age, education level, and occupation status were not related to LBW infant nutritional status. However, maternal parity and responsive caregiving were related to the nutritional status (P-value = < .001). Conclusion: The pediatric nurse should play a crucial role as an infant care provider to enhance mothers’ empowerment in caring for LBW infants. The Responsive caregiving practice education could be an alternative pediatric nursing intervention to reduce LBW infant morbidity and mortality. Keywords: low birth weight; nutritional status; pediatric nursing
