Abstract

This study investigates metacognitive strategies employed by English language learners (ELLs) during listening comprehension activities. The objectives were to identify the metacognitive strategies commonly employed by English language learners during listening comprehension activities and to examine their awareness of the importance of metacognitive strategies in improving listening skills. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study collected data through questionnaires and interviews from university students in Medan, Indonesia. This method provided a comprehensive understanding of the strategies used by learners and their perceptions of the strategies' effectiveness. The results reveal that ELLs actively engage in metacognitive strategies, specifically planning, monitoring, and evaluating, to enhance their listening comprehension. The quantitative data from the questionnaires and qualitative insights from the interviews indicate a high level of awareness among students regarding the importance of these strategies. Ethical measures were strictly observed to ensure participant anonymity. This study contributes to the field of language education by highlighting the critical role of metacognitive strategies in listening comprehension and providing empirical evidence of their use among ELLs.

In this study, the population was all fifth grade students at SD Negeri 091537 with a total of 25 students. Data analysis techniques in quantitative research use statistics, namely parametric statistics and the data analyzed is in the form of a ratio scale or interval scale. Data is taken from a normally distributed population. This research discusses whether audio-visual media is effective in improving students' speaking abilities. In this research, an experimental method was used using an initial test (pretest) and final text (posttest). From the t-test paired samples test above, a t-value of 14.713 can be obtained with a significance level of 0.000. Because the significant probability is much smaller than 0.05, namely 0.000 and tcount is 14.713 > ttable = 2.05183, then Ho is rejected. H1 is accepted. This shows that there is effectiveness of animation media on the language skills of class V students at SDN 091537 Pematangsiantar.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine how Digital Storytelling affected the listening comprehension of students. A quasi-experimental design and quantitative methodology were employed in this study. The research comprised two classes selected through purposive sampling: class VIII-4 served as the experimental class with 30 students, while class VIII-6 served as the control class with an equal number of students. The teaching method in the experimental class involved Digital Storytelling, while the control class received instruction through conventional teaching methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, each consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions. Analysis of the data revealed that the mean score for the pre-test in the experimental class was 65.33, increasing to 80.83 in the post-test. In comparison, the control class had a pre-test mean score of 58.5, which increased to 69.16 in the post-test. Applying the t-test formula, the researchers found that the calculated t-value (2.4) exceeded the critical t-value (1.67155) with degrees of freedom (df) equal to 58. In summary, the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, and the Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Thus, the study concludes that the use of Digital Storytelling had a significant effect on the listening comprehension of narrative texts among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Pematang Siantar. The findings suggest that Digital Storytelling can be effectively applied as a teaching medium to enhance students' listening comprehension skills.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of audio-visual teaching media in improving students' listening comprehension. A quantitative approach was utilized, employing a quasi-experimental research design. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to two whole-class groups: VIII-1 (experimental group, n=22) and VIII-2 (control group, n=22). The sample size consisted of 44 students, determined through purposive sampling. The experimental group received instruction using audio-visual teaching media, specifically movie clips in the listening class, while the control group was taught using audio-recording media. Analysis of the data indicated that the mean score for the pre-test in the experimental group was 42.95, which increased to 70.22 in the post-test. Conversely, the control group had a pre-test mean score of 39.09, which rose to 50.45 in the post-test. By applying the t-test formula, it was discovered that the t-value (5.75) exceeded the t-table (1.68195) with a degree of freedom (df) of 42. Consequently, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Hence, the utilization of audio-visual teaching media had a significant impact on the listening comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMP Swasta Taman Asuhan Pematang Siantar. This study suggests that audio-visual teaching media can be effectively employed as a teaching method to enhance students' listening comprehension skills.
