Abstract

This research aims to analyze differences in mathematical understanding of fourth grade students at UNISMUH Makassar Labschool based on their learning styles. The background to this research stems from various problems found in the field, such as students' low mathematical understanding, teachers' lack of understanding of learning styles, and the lack of research related to learning styles at the elementary school level. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with phenomenological methods to explore students' subjective experiences in understanding integer material based on visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles. The research results show that students with an auditory learning style tend to excel in solving problems verbally and narratively, while visual students are better at understanding basic concepts through pictorial representations, but have difficulty in advanced applications. Kinesthetic students show moderate comprehension, depending on the physical activity and props used. Although differences were found in the level of mathematical understanding between learning styles, these differences were not statistically significant. Thus, learning style is not the only determining factor in students' mathematical understanding, but it still needs to be considered in planning more adaptive learning.

Abstract

Interpreting has long been regarded as a challenging task as it requires heightened cognitive and emotional effort in real-time, and anxiety often affects the interpreting performance. This study explored the factors and impacts of anxiety on the interpreting skills of students who are prospective interpreters. Using a qualitative approach, the study conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 English Department students at Universitas Serambi Mekkah who had finished the interpreting examination. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, and four-anxiety-inducing factors were identified: Fear of Making Mistakes (80%), Lack of Self-Confidence (66%), Time Pressure (66%), and Lack of Preparation (46.6%). The impacts involved performance-related issues, cognitive impairment, physical symptoms, impaired active listening and attention. To cope with the challenges, the student interpreters employed preparation-based approaches, practice and skill development, physical relaxation techniques, and social support systems. This research provides insights that, even though the students independently adopted their own coping mechanisms, interpreting trainers or instructors should also take part in reducing their anxiety, such as incorporating stress management techniques, frequent simulation exercises, and confidence-building activities that could better prepare them for real-world interpreting scenarios.

Abstract

The development of virtual laboratory(VL) has been widely used in secondary school teaching, notably science education. However, the development of VLspecifically for university-level education remains quite limited. In addition, in some practical disciplines, such as membrane-based separation chemistry, both lecturers and students face restrictions in equipment and resources. As a result, the goal of this study is to develop a VL for membrane synthesis practicum utilizing the phase inversion approach that can also be utilized in separation chemical practicum. In addition, the researchers assessed the amount of legitimacy and user response to VL media, specifically among students. This work follows research and development based on ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) framework. The first phase is begun with an analysis (via interviews) to investigate the lecturers issues and needs. Consequently, the analysis confirmed that the development of VL in separation chemistry is very essential. The researchers used feedback from the lecturer during the design stage, namely while gathering the material and presentation of VL to create the storyboard. Then, three experts confirmed the draft created during the development stage, declaring it highly validwith a proportion more than 85%. Face validity and construct validity took major revision to achieve 100% of highly valid. Following the revision steps of draft I (initial version) based on the validation results, draft II (revised version) was created for restricted testing with users (students), and the results revealed a very good response, with more than 90% of students providing feedback ranging from agree to highly agree. Their responses represent the impact received from VL, particularly in digital literacy, building critical and creative thinking, and learning flexibility. Some suggestions for enhancement, particularly the usage of foreign languages in VL, will be considered in the final stage. Thus, the VL can be recommended for use in membrane synthesis experiments in the separation chemistry course.

Abstract

This study aims to optimise the growth of Superior Balitbangtan (KUB-2) chickens through feed restriction during the starter period and its effect on the recovery phase. This study used 100 two-week-old KUB-2 chickens, placed in 20 cages measuring 70 cm x 70 cm x 60 cm, with each cage containing 5 KUB-2 chickens. The study employed a Completely Randomised Design (CRD) with four treatments and five replicates. The variables observed were feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), Growth Rate,  and Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC). The research showed that applying 20%, 30%, and 40% feed restriction had a significant effect (P < 0.01) on decreasing feed intake and body weight gain, but had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the feed conversion ratio during the 4 weeks of treatment. During the recovery phase, ad libitum feeding had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on feed intake, but did not affect body weight gain or feed conversion ratio. Throughout the study, feed restriction followed by recovery had a very significant effect (P < 0.01) on feed intake and a significant effect (P < 0.05) on body weight gain and feed conversion ratio. This study concludes that the 20% feed restriction treatment showed the best performance, with a feed intake of 339.97 g/bird/week, body weight gain of 98.35 g/bird/week, a feed conversion ratio of 3.46, a growth rate of 0.227, and an Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC) of Rp. 14,815.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out declarative memory recalls during online classes. Using a qualitative approach, the instruments used were simple and difficult word-sets. The data were collected through Zoom and WhatsApp platforms and later analyzed using interactive analysis. The results revealed two dissonances encountered: Informational Loss and Built-Up Dissonance. Initially, in the simple-word set, the majority of the students encountered Informational Loss 74 times (after 30 seconds) increasing to 97 times (after 30 minutes). In difficult word sets, it occurred 144 times, increasing to 154 times within identical spans. Regarding Built-Up Dissonance, it occurred 19 times (after 30 seconds), decreasing to 13 times (after 30 minutes) in simple word sets, and 27 times (after 30 seconds), increasing to 30 times (after 30 minutes) in difficult word sets. Surprisingly, it was found that in the recall test, linguistic buffering was generally employed instead of visual buffering. This finding helps teachers understand that virtual learning prompts need to be accompanied by activities involving procedural memory to minimize dissonances.

Abstract

This article examines the history and development of Pacu Jalur, a traditional longboat racing event on the Kuantan River in Kuantan Singingi Regency. Originally, these boats served as means of transportation, but over time, they evolved into a competitive event featured in a national cultural festival. The study also highlights the enthusiasm of the local community involved in Pacu Jalur, as the event is not only compelling as a spectacle but has also become an integral part of daily life. The research employs historical methods through the stages of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, utilizing various sources including newspapers, books, academic articles, and interviews with local residents. The findings indicate that Pacu Jalur developed from a simple local tradition, gradually attracting governmental attention in the 1980s, transforming into a widely celebrated people’s festival, becoming part of Riau’s tourism program, and eventually being recognized as an intangible cultural heritage and incorporated into the Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. Moreover, the enduring popularity of Pacu Jalur is inseparable from the collective enthusiasm of the community, which has been crucial to sustaining the tradition from past to present. Thus, Pacu Jalur serves not only as a cultural symbol but also as a space of communal togetherness and a marker of collective identity for the people of Kuantan Singingi. Keywords: Pacu Jalur, Taluk Kuantan, local history.
