Abstract

Background: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is an upper gastrointestinal disorder frequently associated with obesity. The prevalence of both GERD and obesity continues to rise in Indonesia, highlighting the importance of understanding their epidemiological relationship to support prevention and management strategies. Methods: This study is a narrative literature review that identifies and analyzes scientific publications from 2020–2025 regarding the relationship between obesity and the incidence of GERD in Indonesia. Literature was searched through PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Garuda Ristek-BRIN using relevant keywords. Empirical and relevant articles were selected and analyzed qualitatively. Results: The majority of studies found a significant association between increased Body Mass Index (BMI) and the risk of GERD. The main mechanisms include increased intra-abdominal pressure due to visceral fat accumulation and dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which facilitates gastric acid reflux. Some studies reported an odds ratio for GERD risk in obese individuals reaching up to 9.44 times compared to those with normal weight. Additionally, high-calorie and high-fat diets were shown to exacerbate GERD symptoms. Although some studies reported less significant findings, the general consensus supports obesity as a major risk factor for GERD. Conclusion: Obesity significantly increases the risk of GERD through physiological and hormonal mechanisms. Therefore, weight management through lifestyle modification and nutritional intervention is a crucial strategy for the prevention and treatment of GERD in the adult population in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Research of the potential of mangrove forests as an educational tourism is a survey research that focuses on the richness of mangrove forest ecosystems and its potential as an economic driver for the community through educational tourism activities. This research was conducted in the Idaman mangrove forest, Tarowang sub-district, Jeneponto South Sulawesi province. Data collection techniques used were through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the characteristics of the Idaman mangrove forest consist of various species of mangrove plants, birds, and other mangrove ecosystems that are very potential as a tourist attraction. The potential of the mangrove forest has not been optimized by the communities around tourism area so that it has not yet optimally contributed as an economic source. The constraints in developing of the Idaman mangrove forest as a tourist attraction are the absence of a community-based tourism development and management model on the attractiveness of the Idaman mangrove forest, the low creativity and capacity of the community, as well as limited tourism support facilities. The recommended model for developing mangrove forests is educational tourism based through nursery activities and planting of mangrove forests for conservation, utilization and diversification of mangrove forest products as culinary and handicraft products.

Abstract

Background: Preclampsia is a one of complication in pregnancy characterised by systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg and proteinuria (≥300mg/24hours in urine; protein/creatinine ≥0.3; dipstick protein +1; and/or with additional symptoms. Eclampsia is a severe form of preeclampsia where the mother experiences seizures and/or coma. There are various risk factors for preeclampsia and eclampsia, one of which is the mother's body mass index (BMI). Excessive maternal weight before pregnancy, as well as excessive weight gain during pregnancy are at risk for preeclampsia. Methods: This study used medical records from the Ciawi General Hospital in 2020, and cross-sectional observational study was carried out. Pregnant women with eclampsia and preeclampsia were the study's population. This study used total sampling as its sampling method, and body mass index measurements were made using information from medical records. The Kruskall Wallis alternative test was utilized in place of the One Way Anova as the hypothesis test in this investigation. In this investigation, a 5% level of significance is expected. Results: This study involved 190 respondents who met the inclusion criteria. The statistical test results showed no significant difference in mean body mass index between the eclampsia, severe preeclampsia, and mild preeclampsia groups (P-value: 0.688). This difference is expected due to the small number of samples and/or the high variability of the samples. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, there was no significant association between body mass index and mild, severe, and eclampsia. Further research should be conducted and developed for prevention and lifestyle intervention in preeclampsia.
