Abstract

Critical thinking skills are key cognitive skills that include interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. Thermochemistry topics include knowledge (products of science) and science process skills that to learn them require critical thinking skills. In addition, this topic can also be used to develop critical thinking skills. The purpose of this study was to analyze the critical thinking skills of grade 11 students and their relationship with their thermochemical learning outcomes. This study applies a correlational descriptive research design. The subjects of this study were 266 grade 11 students of SMAN 2, SMAN 8, and SMAN 9 Malang. Data collection is carried out using tests. This research instrument was developed by the researcher himself. The critical thinking skills test on Thermochemistry consists of 10 valid essay questions with a Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.82, while the thermochemical learning outcomes test consists of 15 valid multiple-choice questions with a Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.74. The results showed that the average score of students' thermochemical critical thinking skills was 67.64% and the average score of students' thermochemical learning outcomes was 76.19%. Correlation analysis using Spearman Rank Correlation showed that these two study variables were significantly correlated [sig. (2-tailed) 0.00 < 0.01] and in the direction of medium strength [relationship strength +0.261]. This shows that students who have good critical thinking skills tend to have learning outcomes as well and vice versa.

Abstract

Many silica minerals are found in beach sands. One of its beach sands is in Bajul Mati beach sand which contains high silica. The silica can be extracted using existing methods, but it is less environmentally friendly. In this research, the extracting process of silica from the sand of Bajul Mati beach (South of Java-Indonesia) has been carried out through a method that is low-cost and more environmentally friendly. The purpose of this study was to characterize extracted silica with instrumentation results and economic analysis. The method of extracting silica from beach sand was via leaching and sol-gel methods: i) leaching with 7M HCl,ii) the formation of clear sodium silicate solution (Na2O.SiO2),iii) sol-gel: sodium silicate solution titrated with oxalic acid (H2C2O4) 1 M until pH 6 was obtained and silicite Si(OH)4 was formed, and iv) characterization with X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with economic analysis. The result showed that extracted silica has a cristobalite structure based on XRD analysis. The purity of silica (% Wt Si) reached 93.9% based on XRF analysis. FTIR analysis has identified silanol, siloxic, and siloxane groups. The SEM analysis shows that silica (SiO2) particles tend to form agglomerations about ∼1 μm. In addition, economic analysis results showed that this method will support implementation in the future, so silica has been produced by this developed method.

Abstract

Transparent soap is synthesized from vegetable oils with alkaline bases through the saponification reaction with the addition of a transparent agent. The different material characteristics of coconut oil (Cocos nucifera) and chicken oil (Gallus domesticus) have the potential to produce unique transparent soap. Ultrasonic wave cavitation homogenizes the mixture and accelerates the reaction rate. The purpose of this research is to synthesize transparent soap from coconut oil and chicken oil and compared the soap produced using ultrasonic waves and with soap from the heating method. This experimental laboratory research was carried out with the stages of preparation and characterization of coconut oil and chicken oil, followed by saponification of coconut oil and chicken oil accompanied by ultrasonic waves. Characterization of the synthesized transparent soap. The results in this study indicate that soaps made from coconut oil are more transparent than those made from chicken oil, and soaps made with ultrasonic waves are more transparent than those made by normal heating. The ultrasonic transparent soap character of coconut oil has a moisture content of 22.02%, the non-saponified fraction 1.01%, insoluble part of alcohol by 1.79%, free alkaline by 0.04%, pH 9.35, and this is in accordance with SNI for soap except for its water content. Meanwhile, ultrasonic soap from chicken oil has a moisture content of 23.26%, non-saponified fraction 5.57%, the insoluble portion of alcohol was 4.69%, free alkaline 0.12%, pH 9.60, this is not in accordance with SNI soap. Abstract

Micro-enterprises in the community still need a helping hand in the form of a service program from the campus. It is known that the micro-enterprise community belongs to the lower middle class, so there is still a lack of interest in seeking information/literacy and this results in the absence of business development in the future in a better direction. In Karanganyar Village, Poncokusumo, Malang, a fiber business was found in the manufacture of tools made of plastic, this business has been running for 3 years and there is still no high enough development. In addition, another problem is the problem of fiber waste that has not been utilized at all. There was no processing or conversion into useful and economically valuable materials. The solution offered is the manufacture of organic pots/growing media. The method of implementing this service used three stages, namely preparation, implementation, and reporting. The data collected in the form of documentation, observation, and the results of filling out the respondent's questionnaire which was then analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The results of the service showed that organic growing media from fiberglass can be applied and attract partners' interest. Knowledge of occupational health and safety has enthusiastically educated partners. The results of the partner satisfaction questionnaire showed that this service activity has a very satisfied response category of 65.7% and a satisfied response of 34.3%. So, WBS fiberglass partners have received, supported, appreciated, and followed this service well.
