Abstract

A review of epistemology of al-Qurtubi tafsir is very important. This is to determine how the origins, sources, methods, and steps are taken by the author. As comprehensive tafsir with fiqh pattern, this work contributes information and relatively different approach in which the author is far from fanaticism sect. He uses various arguments of the scholars then he chooses a strong one according to the mufassir. With descriptive-analytic study, this paper finds that al-Qurtubi epistemology base is a combination of bil ma'sur and bil ma'qul, a combination of textual and contextual which expresses many perspectives before it has been chosen as the truth by al-Qurtubi without fanaticism impression against embraced sect. Based on the review of his resume, this paper proves that the interpretation of al-Qurtubi is a representation in which the author associates and responds to the problems that happened at that era and answers based on the era.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper tries to explore the work of tafsir tabi’in, Mujahid bin Jabar. In identifying the existence of Mujahid, interpretation there are at least two sources of interpretation used by the author in interpreting the Qur’an; (1) the source of bi al-ma’tsur, that is based on the Qur’an’s own explanation, in addition to the prophetic traditions, opinions of prophet’s companion, and also israiliyyat (2) the source of bi al-ra’yi, based on the ijtihad of the interpreter. While in explaining the Qur’an, the method that Mujahid carried is the ijmali method, which is to interpret the verses of the Qur’an in a brief language, solid, and not lengthy, also using the muqaran method although only slightly. For his interpretive style, Mujahid’s interpretation does not extend to any particular discipline, only limited with the feel of interpretation of his teacher – Ibn ‘Abbas, although in some interpretations there is a fiqhi and kalami pattern with very little capacity.

Abstract

AbstractThis article aims to find out the solutions offered by the Qur’an in overcoming al-H{uzn (sadness) that afflicts human life. But before revealing it, the author explains in advance the factors that led to the emergence of al-H{uzn according to the Qur’an. By using a descriptive analytical thematic method, the author concludes that the meaning of al-H{uzn in the Qur'an is a feeling of sadness experienced by a person that can have a positive or negative effect on his life. The factors that cause the emergence of al-H{uzn according to the Qur’an are feelings of fear, misfortune and poverty. The Qur'an also provides a solution to eliminate the sadness that permeates human life, namely by being patient, establishing prayer, always istiqa>mah, fearing Allah, dhikr to Him, and multiplying infaq. These five solutions can be used as guidelines as well as normative foundations by Muslims so that in life they avoid sadness and worryKeywords: Al-H{uzn, al-Qur'an, life, solution, interpretation AbstrakArtikel ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui solusi yang ditawarkan al-Qur’an dalam mengatasi al-H{uzn (kesedihan) yang menghinggapi kehidupan manusia. Namun sebelum mengungkapnya, penulis menerangkan terlebih dahulu faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan munculnya al-H{uzn menurut al-Qur’an. Kata Kunci: Al-H{uzn, al-Qur’an, kehidupan, solusi, tafsir

Abstract

This article examines the hadith prohibiting someone from wearing a ponytail when performing prayer. There are so many hairstyles nowadays and demands, this is difficult for some people, both men and women, to avoid. Is it contrary to the hadith of the Prophet or not! This is interesting to research further. How to understand the hadith in the current context is a solution to find answers put forward using the ma'ani al-hadith method, so that the hadith is contextualized according to current developments. By using qualitative methods, this article concludes that the understanding of the hadith above is that there are provisions for the period in which it occurred. The hadith prohibition of wearing hair in a ponytail during prayer can actually change into a separate context so that it can be changed to allow wearing hair in a ponytail during prayer. Contextualization in this context refers to efforts to understand and interpret a religious teaching or commandment, in this case the hadith, by considering different cultural, social and time contexts. In this case, contextualizing the hadith "prohibition of wearing hair in a ponytail during prayer" involves understanding that the rule may be adapted to current realities that are different from the time in which the hadith was conveyed. This emphasizes that the understanding and application of Islamic law is not static, but can adapt to changing times and different social conditions.

Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to critically examines the distinction between the Qur’an and Hadith in response to John Wansbrough’s revisionist-skeptical perspective on the origins of the Qur’an. Wansbrough argued that both corpora emerged from the same “sectarian” milieu and developed within a nearly identical historical timeframe. The present study addresses two primary questions: how Fred M. Donner conceptualizes the distinction between the Qur’an and Hadith, and how his arguments challenge Wansbrough’s theoretical framework. Employing a qualitative methodology with a descriptive-analytical approach, this research analyzes the principal works of both scholars to compare their arguments from textual and historical perspectives. The findings indicate that Wansbrough’s thesis lacks a robust historical foundation, as six key aspects religious and political authority, portrayals of the Prophet’s contemporaries, elements of anachronism, narratives of earlier prophets, depictions of Prophet Muhammad, and descriptions of ritual prayer reveal significant differences between the Qur’an and Hadith. These results support the conclusion that the Qur’an did not originate from the same sectarian environment as the Hadith but emerged in an earlier and distinct historical context. Consequently, the Qur’an is understood to have preceded the Hadith both chronologically and in terms of codification. This article contributes to clarifying the independence and authenticity of the Qur’an as the earliest and primary source of Islamic teaching, while enriching textual-historical scholarship in response to Western revisionist discourse concerning the origins of Islamic scripture.

Abstract

This article examines the sleep call phenomenon as the beginning of adultery with a focus on studying the hadiths about adultery. By using a qualitative descriptive-analytical type of library research, this article draws the following conclusions; First, the understanding of hadiths about adultery shows that adultery is not only interpreted as having intimate relations between men and women, but adultery includes a broad meaning that can lead to the true meaning of adultery, such as adultery of the eyes, adultery of the ear, adultery of the hands, adultery heart, and so on. Second, the sleep call phenomenon that is currently happening especially among teenagers, with reference to the understanding of hadiths about adultery, is an act that can approach adultery and the beginning of adultery. Explanation of the Prophet's hadith which shows that many things can approach true adultery, such as ear adultery, tongue adultery, hand adultery, and heart adultery, can position the sleep call phenomenon as including actions that are close to adultery so that it can lead to true adultery, namely having sex between men -male and female.

Abstract

The use of Isrā’Ä«liyyāt in interpretation is still questioned. However, Isrā’Ä«liyyāt has colored several commentaries' works, including Tafsir Nusantara. One of which is Tafsir al-Ibriz. Using the Javanese language and Pegon writing as the interpreter's selected language and introduction writing is one of the interpretation's distinctive features. Historically, Isrā’Ä«liyyāt is frequently found in bi al-ma'tsur interpretations. Still, it turns out that the dominating al-Ibriz Tafsir ra'yi is also found by Isrā’Ä«liyyāt, which has its peculiarities in its application and relation to the sociocultural context of writing. This study employed library research using qualitative approaches. Tafsir al-Ibrz was the main data source. In contrast, the secondary sources included journals and others. Documentation strategies were used in the analytical methodology. It also used the content analysis method of Norman Fairclough's discourse analysis methodology. In this research, the Isrā’Ä«liyyāt sample accounts for Ashhab al-Kahf, Prophet Noah's Ark, and Luqman's identity. According to the findings of this study, Al-Ibriz's Tafsir includes Isrā’Ä«liyyāt and then comments on the advantages and suggestions that can be followed. Regarding its sociocultural context, Tafsir al-Ibriz was composed amid Javanese society's social culture, which is still saturated with the tradition of believing in ancestors and the love of stories. The narrative of Isrā’Ä«liyyāt described in this study is a sociological strategy meant to lead individuals away from their ancestral/mystical beliefs and toward the Qur’an.

Abstract

This article discusses the eco-sufism that Hamka built in his book Tafsir al-Azhar. This is motivated by the issue of environmental damage caused by, among other things, the anthropocentric paradigm, namely the notion that views humans as the center of the universe and has the right to exploit nature without considering its sustainability. Meanwhile, the hallmark of Hamka's interpretation of the verses of the Qur'an, which has a Sufi tendency, is trying to respond to environmental damage by offering sustainable environmental conservation efforts. Using a descriptive-explorative thematic method, Hamka built five efforts in preserving the environment with a Sufism approach, namely: paying attention to nature will strengthen faith in Allah; natural order is a form of God's existence; contemplation of nature will cause ‘isyq (longing) to God; managing nature as a provision to return to the presence of God; and being grateful for the results of natural resources by sharing them with others. In the interpretation of the verses about the five efforts, it appears that Hamka's interp retation tries to respond to environmental damage with a Sufi approach, which is seen as contributing to environmental conservation in a sustainable manner. Hamka provides a paradigm for balancing human rights and obligations to nature based on the holy book al-Qur'an so that it can be used as a guide for all Indonesians to realize a polite and moderate Islam towards nature by paying attention to environmental conservation.

Abstract

Western scholars’ studies on the historicity of the Qur’an have been ongoing since the 12th century to the present day. In their development, some of these studies tend to undermine Islam by employing source criticism and tradition criticism to cast doubt on the authenticity of the Qur’an in early Islamic history. This article aims to examine the debate between revisionist-skeptical and academic-dialogical groups regarding the historicity of the Qur’an. Using qualitative-descriptive methods and critical data analysis, this article finds that studies conducted by revisionist-skeptical scholars such as Abraham Geiger and John Wansbrough view the Qur’an as an imitative text of previous texts and parallel to the Hadith. However, the studies of these revisionist-skeptical scholars are countered by Angelika Neuwirth and Fred M. Donner, as part of the academic-dialogical group. They reject and refute this view by pointing out methodological weaknesses and ideological biases that lead to erroneous conclusions by the revisionists. It is due to initial assumptions based on a negative perspective and a polemical-apologetic attitude towards Islam. They offer a more open and positive approach to Islam. The theoretical implications of these two major schools of thought demonstrate that the initial paradigm for viewing the Qur’an significantly influences the results and direction of research. This article contributes to enriching the study of Orientalism by opening up a more objective, constructive, and relevant scientific dialogue for the development of Qur’anic studies in the contemporary era.
