Abstract

This study explores the functions and meanings of belis, a traditional dowry or bride price in Manggarai culture, within marriage ceremonies in Mbuit Village, West Manggarai. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in symbolic interactionism, data were collected through in-depth interviews with cultural informants, supported by observation and literature review, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman three-step framework. The findings reveal that belis serves as a key cultural element, fostering social integration, promoting harmony, and preserving traditions in Manggarai marriages. Symbolically, belis represents the union of two families (social integration) and signifies an economic exchange. The study also highlights the challenges faced by families, particularly those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, in fulfilling the belis requirements, underscoring its deep cultural significance and the commitment it represents.

Abstract

Coastal fishermen communities hold religious rituals as Sufism practices. One of which is Tarekat Khalwatiyah-Samman, which affects their daily work. This paper aims to identify the substance of the Khalwatiyah-Samman teachings. It deciphers the effect of this teaching on the work of fishermen on the south coast of South Sulawesi. This research is qualitative with social and empirical approaches. Data collection was done through in-depth interviews, observation, and literature study. It employed qualitative data processing and analysis. The results showed that the substance of the Khalwatiyah-Samman teachings lies in its three doctrines: the purification of the soul, the concept of the essence of God, and the concept of human essence. In addition, the influence of Khalwatiyah-Samman's teaching on the work of fishermen on the south coast of South Sulawesi is the emergence of attitudes in work such as complacency; God has determined everything, and they do not have a competitive spirit and spirit of achievement. Accordingly, the substance of the Khalwatiyah-Samman teaching is that God has determined all human actions, and humans only live it. Moreover, the effect of the Khalwatiyah-Samman teaching is to form an attitude of fatalism in fishermen or resignation. Abstract

The Kajang people are known for their lives based on traditional values, traditional beliefs, and distinctive local wisdom. They are here to preserve traditions amidst the blows of globalization. With this local wisdom, researchers are interested in analyzing the social construction of the Kajang traditional community to maintain their local wisdom. This research used a qualitative approach through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and data analysis using grounded theory analysis techniques. The research results show that the Kajang indigenous community faced challenges in maintaining their local wisdom amidst social changes and external influences. However, with its social construction, it maintained local wisdom through externalization, objectivation, and internalization processes. With this social construction approach, the Kajang traditional community can show resilience and initiative to preserve local wisdom and strengthen social ties between community members. This research will not only provide new insights into the local wisdom of the Kajang people in efforts to preserve culture, community development, and policy development in Indonesia.

Abstract

Community empowerment becomes effective when the community responds to the activities carried out in empowerment. This service activity is a form of community empowerment in the tourism sector with a series of socialization, training, and mentoring activities. The targets of this empowerment are community groups such as youth organizations, tourism awareness groups, and tourism observer groups whose members come from the local community. This activity started with a half day FGD to identify their needs. Based on FGD data, the results of the analysis show that the community needs socialization about tourism perspectives, training is needed related to tourism potential mapping, tourism object management, supporting facilities and infrastructure management and guest management. To strengthen the training, the community also needs assistance from professionals and professional institutions such as professional guides under the Indonesian Tour Guide Association (HPI), Tourism Village Association (ASIDEWI), Indonesian Archipelago Tourism Village (DEWISNU) regarding the management of local tourism potential. In the implementation of socialization, the community was presented with material about the urgency of tourism to improve their economy. The Alla Village community has all of these potentials, both natural potential, cultural potential, and garden potential. All require management by skilled, knowledgeable and professional local people. The training activity was continued with mapping and identifying tourism potential and found many locations that could be managed professionally. This PKM recommends advanced training to explore more deeply the local potential and the potential of local human resources.
