Abstract

This study aims to explore the development of understanding of the concepts of pH, acid-base titration, and buffer solutions among 11th-grade students and 2nd- and 4th-semester university students in chemistry education. It employs a cross-sectional design using open-ended questions and interview guidelines to collect data from 153 11th-grade students, 30 second-semester university students, and 40 fourth-semester university students. The open-ended questionnaire consists of 9 items (2 questions on the pH of solutions, 4 questions on acid-base indicators and titration, and 3 questions on buffer solutions and salt hydrolysis) on a continuous scale, with an Aiken's kappa validity of 0.61 (substantial agreement) and a Cronbach's Alpha reliability (KR-20) of 0.75 (acceptable). The results indicate that scientific understanding of pH concepts, such as the pH of solutions, acid-base titration, and buffer solutions, improves with education. However, comprehension of complex concepts remains low. The study's implications highlight the need for curriculum development and the selection and implementation of learning strategies that enable students to learn in a structured, gradual, and coherent manner. Curriculum development should map out subject matter, distinguish essential from non-essential content, and organize material from simple and essential topics to more complex and non-essential ones.

Abstract

Indonesia ranks second globally in tuberculosis (TB) cases, with West Java identified as a high-burden TB region. Community pharmacists, often the first point of patient contact, have the potential to support TB monitoring. However, their role remains underutilized and understudied. This study aimed to evaluate community pharmacists' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in monitoring TB medication, and to examine the relationships among these variables and respondent characteristics. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 419 pharmacists across 27 districts and cities in West Java Province. Data were collected via a validated online questionnaire comprising KAP domains. Descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation, and Chi-Square tests were used to analyze relationships between KAP scores and demographic/professional characteristics. Community pharmacists demonstrated moderate knowledge in TB treatment (14.94 ± 1.99), generally have a positive attitude towards the importance of their role and ability to monitor use of TB drug (21.6 ± 3.3). In practice, community pharmacists are low in reporting, monitoring, and providing assistance related to TB patients (10.7 ± 5.2). Significant but low correlations were observed between knowledge and attitude (r = 0.110, p = 0.024), knowledge and practice (r = 0.116, p = 0.018), and attitude and practice (r = 0.343, p < 0.001). Practice scores were significantly associated with access to patient consultation services (p < 0.001), while knowledge was linked to pharmacy location (p = 0.032), and attitude to gender (p = 0.026). Although community pharmacists in West Java show sufficient knowledge and positive attitudes, their involvement in TB monitoring practices remains limited. Targeted education and policy interventions are essential for their engagement in national TB control efforts.

Abstract

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a repeated cycle process including denaturation, annealing and extension using the DNA polymerase enzyme. This identification method is based on specific DNA which increases the number of DNA strands millions of times. The aim of this study was to identify and classify phenolic group compounds in traditional food spices that have the potential to inhibit DNA polymerase and their mechanism of action in the PCR process. The observation made was the Literature Review study as an analytical test method regarding the study of DNA polymerase inhibition by phenolic group compounds in traditional food spices in the PCR process. The results of this study were analyzed from several appropriate literature studies showing that most of the spices in traditional foods contain secondary metabolites of phenolic group compounds. These compounds have been shown to inhibit DNA polymerase in the PCR process, one of the mechanisms is to bind to the active site of DNA polymerase which causes decreased activity and deactivates DNA polymerase. Moreover, it can degrade and denaturate DNA polymerase. This makes it difficult to identify haram substances in processed food products using PCR.

Abstract

The use of dyes such as methylene blue is widespread. However, if methylene blue is discharged without prior treatment, it can lead to pollution problems. In this study, the engineering of zeolites and the degradation mechanism of methylene blue using Fe-TiO2/MOR zeolite as a photocatalyst were investigated. XRD characterization results revealed that Fe-TiO2/MOR zeolite has a crystalline phase. Based on XRF characterization, the percentage of Fe and Ti significantly increased, indicating the successful immobilization of TiO2 and doping of Fe3+ into the zeolite structure to form a composite. The morphological analysis of the Fe-TiO2/MOR zeolite composite showed a rough surface, which could affect its surface area. The Fe-TiO2/MOR zeolite photocatalyst has a band gap of 3.08 eV, allowing it to absorb visible light more efficiently. The study on the application of methylene blue photodegradation using Fe-TiO2/MOR zeolite as a photocatalyst demonstrated higher degradation efficiency compared to using inactivated, non-immobilized, and undoped mordenite zeolite. With an optimal mass of 0.03 grams, a contact time of 90 minutes, and a pH of 10, the percentage of degraded methylene blue reached 98.91%. The Fe-TiO2/MOR zeolite composite has the potential to be used as a photocatalyst in methylene blue photodegradation reactions.

Abstract

The increasing dependence on fossil fuels to meet fuel needs has caused several problems, such as air pollution, greenhouse effects, unpleasant odors, and loud noises. This research aims to design an alternative fuel in the form of biodiesel by applying a heterogeneous catalyst based on palm bunch to synthesize biodiesel through transesterification. The research stages include activating the active sites of palm bunches through calcination at temperatures of 400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C; refining waste cooking oil; esterification; and transesterification. The active components of palm bunch ash (PBA) were characterized using XRF and alkalinity testing. XRF results indicated that PBA contains active basic compounds such as K₂O and CaO, crucial in catalytic activity. Physical-chemical property testing revealed that the synthesis achieved the highest yield of 93.744 %. The results of the physical-chemical characteristic tests produced the best density with an average of 0.888 g mL⁻¹, and the lowest viscosity with an average of 3.79 cSt at 40 °C with an iodine number of 80.116 g I₂ 100 g⁻¹, a saponification number of 170.57 mg KOH g⁻¹, and a refractive index of 1.445. The catalyst demonstrated stable performance up to three reuses with yields ranging from 80–90 %. FTIR spectra showed strong absorption bands at 1172–1165 cm⁻¹, indicating C-O-CH₃ stretching from methyl esters. GC-MS analysis showed that the biodiesel consists of various fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), with the main component being methyl oleate, which appears at a retention time of 37.096 minutes with an area of 40.31 %. So it is shown that PBA catalysts have an excellent potential for commercial applications as they can reduce dependence on fossil fuels by utilizing household waste.
