Abstract

Photocatalysts have gained enormous attention in water decontamination due to their economic viable and intriguing properties. Recently, graphene-based semiconductors have become the sparkling star on the horizon of material science. The coupling of two-dimensional graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide) with semiconductors could effectively enhance the efficiency in organic wastewater degradation under light irradiation. Hence, a collective study on this topic is necessary.  Four types of graphene-based semiconductors, viz. titania, zinc oxide, cadmium sulfide, and bismuth oxychloride, are explored. Besides, synthesis approaches and properties of these photocatalysts are elucidated too. We hope this review could enable us to rationally design and harness the morphology, structure and electronic properties of these advanced materials. Abstract

The catalytic performance of titania-supported carbon mesoporous-derived from fish bones (TiO2/CFB) has been investigated in styrene oxidation with aqueous H2O2. The preparation steps of (TiO2/CFB) catalyst involved the carbonization of fish bones powder at 500 °C for 2 h. followed by impregnation of titania using titanium(IV) isopropoxide (500 µmol) precursor, and calcined at 350 °C for 3 h. The physical properties of the adsorbents were characterized using Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption studies. The catalytic test was carried out using styrene oxidation with H2O2 as an oxidant at room temperature for 24 h. Its catalytic activity was compared with Fe2O3/CFB, CuO/CFB, TiO2, and CFB catalysts. It is demonstrated that the catalytic activity of TiO2/CFB catalyst has the highest compared to Fe2O3/CFB, CuO/CFB, TiO2, and CFB catalysts in the oxidation of styrene with styrene conversion ~23% and benzaldehyde selectivity ~90%. Kinetics of TiO2/CFB catalyzed oxidation of styrene has been investigated and mechanism for oxidation of styrene has been proposed. Abstract

Natural zeolite from Malang Regency is a raw material that can be used as an adsorbent for heavy metal waste. However, this natural zeolite needs activation and optimization to be utilized maximally as an adsorbent. This study was conducted for both physical and chemical activation of natural zeolite. Characterization results of XRD indicated that the natural zeolite possesses crystalline phases and is of the mordenite type. Based on the XRF results, the Si/Al ratio increased from 5.768 to 6.119 after activation. Based on the characterization results using the BET method with SAA analysis, the surface area of non-activated natural zeolite was determined to be 20.8045 m²/g, while activated natural zeolite had a surface area of 137.8196 m²/g. Results of the adsorption study in treating liquid laboratory waste using simulated Pb and Cr metal wastes demonstrated that activated natural zeolite performed more effectively as an adsorbent than non-activated natural zeolite. The adsorbent’s optimum mass was 0.3 grams, resulting in an adsorption percentage of 97.43% for Pb and 97.56% for Cr, with a contact time of 30 minutes at pH 6. The adsorption kinetics of Pb and Cr metals were described using a pseudo-second-order rate equation. The adsorption of Pb and Cr was depicted using the Langmuir equation, indicating the monolayer formation on the homogenous adsorbent surface during the adsorption process. The activated natural zeolite has the potential to be employed as an independent adsorbent in the treatment of heavy metal waste.

Abstract

The banana plant that is still underutilized compared to the fruit part is the heart of the banana. Even though the heart of the banana has many benefits and nutritional content that is good for health. Seeing the potential of the heart of the banana can improve public health, so food diversification efforts such as flour and substitutes for the basic ingredients of food to produce new forms of product innovation, so research was carried out to test its content, which aims to inform the public that the heart of the banana can be beneficial for health in processing into flour. This research was carried out in March-April 2022 at the Chemistry Education Laboratory of Nusa Cendana University, Kupang. There are four stages in this study, including 1) Manufacture of the heart of banana flour; 2) Proximate Test of the heart of banana flour; 3) Diversification of products based on the heart of banana flour, 4) Organoleptic test of products based on the heart of banana flour on 52 panelists. The results of research on the manufacture of banana heart flour are substituents of flour that have good nutritional content with relatively good character if used as a substitute for wheat flour because many parameters meet the quality requirements of wheat flour, namely the physical characteristics of banana heart flour meet the test requirements for shape. In contrast, the aroma, color, and taste in accordance with the characteristics of the nutritional content meet the moisture content proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. In contrast, the ash content does not complete because the mineral content in each ingredient is different and the manufacture of wheat flour. The result of the diversification of the products made, namely the Genital Widow Cake / Monde chips made from banana heart flour, are also included in the excellent category where the aroma, taste, and acceptance of the product are accepted in the community.

Abstract

Micro-enterprises in the community still need a helping hand in the form of a service program from the campus. It is known that the micro-enterprise community belongs to the lower middle class, so there is still a lack of interest in seeking information/literacy and this results in the absence of business development in the future in a better direction. In Karanganyar Village, Poncokusumo, Malang, a fiber business was found in the manufacture of tools made of plastic, this business has been running for 3 years and there is still no high enough development. In addition, another problem is the problem of fiber waste that has not been utilized at all. There was no processing or conversion into useful and economically valuable materials. The solution offered is the manufacture of organic pots/growing media. The method of implementing this service used three stages, namely preparation, implementation, and reporting. The data collected in the form of documentation, observation, and the results of filling out the respondent's questionnaire which was then analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The results of the service showed that organic growing media from fiberglass can be applied and attract partners' interest. Knowledge of occupational health and safety has enthusiastically educated partners. The results of the partner satisfaction questionnaire showed that this service activity has a very satisfied response category of 65.7% and a satisfied response of 34.3%. So, WBS fiberglass partners have received, supported, appreciated, and followed this service well.

Abstract

Science learning that only focuses on the assignment and exposure to material can cause students to be less interested and less motivated to learn science. One example of a student's worksheet (Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik in Indonesian, LKPD)  that effectively attracts students' learning interest is using the LKPD format in comics because it combines visual elements with words. The content of comics can be arranged based on scientific events and dialogues from everyday life, helping students understand the relationship between science and the context of everyday life. This study aims to determine the role of comic-based LKPD in attracting interest and motivation to learn science for grade 9B students of SMPN 11 Malang. This research is included in quantitative descriptive research using survey methods. The data collection for this study was done through a questionnaire distributed through Google Forms with a Likert interval scale. The results of the questionnaire data analysis show that 81.83% of students strongly agree that comic-based LKPD attracts their interest and motivation to learn.

Abstract

Biodiesel is still being developed as a renewable fuel to replace a diesel fuel. Biodiesel production of castor oil has high potential because the oil did not compete with foods. Furthermore, a transesterification process can be optimized by heterogeneous base catalysts. Thus, this study aims to: (1) synthesize CaO/K2O catalysts to be used in the transesterification process, (2) synthesize biodiesel of castor oil and characterize it according to SNI 7182:2015, and (3) study the effect of CaO/K2O variations on biodiesel product. This laboratory experimental research was carried out in the following stages: (1) characterization of castor oil, (2) esterification, (3) preparation of CaO/K2O catalyst, (4) transesterification, and (5) characterization of the synthesized methyl ester. The results showed that the characterization of castor oil included a density of 1.074 g/mL, an acid number of 9.5 mg/g, a free fatty acid (FFA) of 5.09%, and a viscosity of 701 cSt. Stratified esterification and transesterification showed a significant effect on reducing FFA, so the characterization of the transesterified methyl ester from the best catalyst variations (CaO/K2O 1:2) included a density of 1.016 g/mL, an acid number of 1.1 mg/g, FFA content of 0.58%, moisture content of 1.1%, viscosity 43.55 cSt, and refractive index (25) of 1.466.
