Abstract

Many silica minerals are found in beach sands. One of its beach sands is in Bajul Mati beach sand which contains high silica. The silica can be extracted using existing methods, but it is less environmentally friendly. In this research, the extracting process of silica from the sand of Bajul Mati beach (South of Java-Indonesia) has been carried out through a method that is low-cost and more environmentally friendly. The purpose of this study was to characterize extracted silica with instrumentation results and economic analysis. The method of extracting silica from beach sand was via leaching and sol-gel methods: i) leaching with 7M HCl,ii) the formation of clear sodium silicate solution (Na2O.SiO2),iii) sol-gel: sodium silicate solution titrated with oxalic acid (H2C2O4) 1 M until pH 6 was obtained and silicite Si(OH)4 was formed, and iv) characterization with X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with economic analysis. The result showed that extracted silica has a cristobalite structure based on XRD analysis. The purity of silica (% Wt Si) reached 93.9% based on XRF analysis. FTIR analysis has identified silanol, siloxic, and siloxane groups. The SEM analysis shows that silica (SiO2) particles tend to form agglomerations about ∼1 μm. In addition, economic analysis results showed that this method will support implementation in the future, so silica has been produced by this developed method.

Abstract

The increased production of biodiesel which is used as an alternative fuel has led to an increase in the by-product in the form of glycerol. This glycerol byproduct can be utilized by converting it into other compounds such as ethanol. The production of ethanol from glycerol requires a catalyst that can break down the molecular size of glycerol, one of which is zeolite. One type of zeolite that is good to use is ZSM-5, because this type of zeolite has a high degree of thermal stability, acid stability and selectivity. The catalytic properties of ZSM-5 can be improved by impregnating metals from the transition group, in this study using Ni (nickel). The results obtained that the catalyst Ni/ZSM-5 has a total acidity value of 0.920 mmol/g and has a specific surface area of 138.754 m2/g. The highest ethanol product was produced at 4 hours of sonication, which was 20.362%.

Abstract

Transparent soap is synthesized from vegetable oils with alkaline bases through the saponification reaction with the addition of a transparent agent. The different material characteristics of coconut oil (Cocos nucifera) and chicken oil (Gallus domesticus) have the potential to produce unique transparent soap. Ultrasonic wave cavitation homogenizes the mixture and accelerates the reaction rate. The purpose of this research is to synthesize transparent soap from coconut oil and chicken oil and compared the soap produced using ultrasonic waves and with soap from the heating method. This experimental laboratory research was carried out with the stages of preparation and characterization of coconut oil and chicken oil, followed by saponification of coconut oil and chicken oil accompanied by ultrasonic waves. Characterization of the synthesized transparent soap. The results in this study indicate that soaps made from coconut oil are more transparent than those made from chicken oil, and soaps made with ultrasonic waves are more transparent than those made by normal heating. The ultrasonic transparent soap character of coconut oil has a moisture content of 22.02%, the non-saponified fraction 1.01%, insoluble part of alcohol by 1.79%, free alkaline by 0.04%, pH 9.35, and this is in accordance with SNI for soap except for its water content. Meanwhile, ultrasonic soap from chicken oil has a moisture content of 23.26%, non-saponified fraction 5.57%, the insoluble portion of alcohol was 4.69%, free alkaline 0.12%, pH 9.60, this is not in accordance with SNI soap. Abstract

Diarrheal is a disease that is widely endemic in tropical countries, especially in Indonesia. The bacterium that causes the appearance of diarrheal diseases is Eschericia coli. Plants that have the potential to be a cure for diarrhea are ketapang (Terminalia catappa L.). Ketapang seeds contain tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins that can be used as antibacterial. This study aims to identify the effect of ketapang seed extract on the activity of E. coli bacteria. Extraction of ketapang seeds is carried out by the soxhlet extraction method with a solvent mixture of water and ethanol 96%. This research is a laboratory experiment. Bacterial growth inhibition test is carried out by the phytochemical test of ketapang seed extract with the addition of FeCl3 solution showed positive results containing tannin compound indicated by the formation of a blackish-green colored solution. Positive control was carried out with amoxicillin and negative control with 70% ethanol solution. The results of the ANOVA test analysis obtained a significance value of 0.963, interpreted that there was a difference in inhibition power in variations in the concentration of ketapang seed extract with the most effective extract concentration being 0.8%. The higher the concentration of ketapang seed extract, the greater the inhibition against the growth of E. coli bacteria, therefore it can be used as a basic ingredient for anti-diarrhea drugs.

Abstract

In this era, most technology requires electronic equipment. The performance of electronic equipment may be affected by energy storage components like a supercapacitor, so the development of supercapacitor electrode materials using green chemical methods needs to be pursued. Material with a good specific capacitance is MnO2. Most of the MnO2 synthesis methods are not based on green chemistry, so there is an alternative method. One of them is by utilizing the waste from tangerine peels. This study aimed to synthesize MnO2 through dehydroxylation of tangerine peel essential oil. The steps for conducting this research consisted of isolation of tangerine peel essential oil, analysis of the constituent components of tangerine peel essential oil, synthesis of MnO2 through dehydroxylation of essential oils tangerine peel, and MnO2 characterization. XRD results showed that MnO2 synthesized at pH 11 had the highest percentage of α-MnO2 (97%). This is evidenced by the presence of α-MnO2 diffractogram according to the ICSD No.20227. The SEM results showed that MnO2 had a spherical morphology with a particle diameter of 39.51 nm. α-MnO2 has a larger tunnel structure compared to β- and γ-MnO2, making the charge-discharge process easier so that α-MnO2 has the potential as a supercapacitor electrode material.
