Abstract

It has been a year after the announcement of Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan. Activity restriction, implementation of health protocol, and lock-down are enforced to cut-off the spread of this virus. However, in the uncertainty towards a new normal, the mobility of people continues for various purposes. A rapid medical check-up at the airport or at railway stations is possible by the local authorities but it is impossible for public bus passengers due to the limitations of medical staff and a large number of bus stations. Most passengers also failed to comply with the government's recommendation to conduct a rapid test before using public buses. As anticipation, the Transportation Agency issued a regulation that all buses can only be filled with 50% (max) of their normal capacity by emptying 2 of the 4 seats in a row. As a consequence, a 32-seat bus can only be filled with 16 passengers (max) and the ticket price has doubled to cover operational costs. However, passenger interest in bus services has decreased due to high ticket prices. Therefore, this short article reports the smart actions of several bus companies in Indonesia to create a "Captain Seat", a 1-1-1 bus seat configuration to ensure physical distancing between passengers. With the captain seat model, buses with 32 seats are modified to 24 seats, the ideal distance between passengers during a pandemic can be maintained, the risk of loss to bus companies can be reduced, and passenger costs can be lowered.

Abstract

In recent years, one of the most logical efforts made to reduce the dependence on fossil energy sources is the use of a gasoline-methanol fuel blend. However, the problem in using a gasoline-methanol blend as fuel is that the methanol will eventually separate itself from the gasoline unless they are properly blended together, this is because methanol has a polar hydroxyl group called monohydric that binds water vapor together, causing the mixture to separate. Previous research showed that adding a small amount of ethanol to the gasoline-methanol blend makes it a homogeneous blend. Therefore, this research aims to identify the exhaust emissions of the homogenous gasoline-methanol-(ethanol) blend. For each blended fraction was tested on a single-cylinder four-stroke engine. The emission test is carried out in two stages which include the gasoline mode, and the alcohol mode. These two measurement modes undergo a validation process to correct the differences in the measurement results of the gasoline-methanol-ethanol blends. The test results show that increasing the methanol fraction in the gasoline-methanol-(ethanol) fuel blend results in reduced emission of carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbon because methanol has a high enthalpy of evaporation, which increases both volumetric efficiency and complete combustion. In addition, the increase in the methanol fraction in the gasoline-methanol-(ethanol) blend showed a higher increase in carbon dioxide emissions. This is because methanol and ethanol have a much lower energy content than gasoline. Therefore, its energy production per unit time requires more fuel molecules.

Abstract

This article is the result of implementing the CSR program of PT PLN Magelang Regency branch to help solve problems in the Rahayu Manunggal Women Farmers Group (KWT). High production costs and low profits are obstacles faced by KWT Rahayu Manunggal. This problem is caused by the production process of making brown sugar which uses quite a lot of energy, including the drying process of brown sugar. Applying an energy-efficient oven at KWT Rahayu Manunggal can help overcome this problem. The concept of the oven machine is designed by utilizing the heat/energy stored in the exhaust gas produced by the sap cooking furnace. The results obtained from this system can increase profits and reduce production costs, as well as improve the cleanliness of brown sugar processing.

Abstract

In this study, waste and discarded cooking oils (WCO) of palm, sunflower, rice bran and groundnut oils are collected from local restaurants. The high viscous WCO was converted into waste cooking oil biodiesel (WCOBD) by a single-stage transesterification process. During the transesterification process, the important parameters which show a significant change in biodiesel yield are studied using the optimization tool of response surface methodology (RSM). Results reported that 91.30% biodiesel yield was achieved within L18 experiments and NaOH catalyst was identified as the most influential parameter on WCOBD yield. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based modeling was also carried out to predict biodiesel yield. From AI modeling, a predicted yield of 92.88% was achieved, which is 1.70% higher than the RSM method. These results reveal the prediction capabilities and accuracy of the chosen modeling and optimization methods. In addition, the significant fuel properties are measured and observed within the scope of ASTM standards (ASTMD6751) and fatty acid profiles from chromatography reveal the presence of high unsaturated fatty acids in WCOBD. Therefore, utilizing the waste cooking oils for biodiesel production can mitigate the global challenges of environmental and energy paucity.

Abstract

The high monthly costs associated with the use of electrical energy for the production of dairy cowsheds at the KTT Sumber Sari, as well as the problem of PLN blackouts, have a negative impact on the smooth production process. Meanwhile, KTT Sumber Sari already has a 40 m3 biodigester that has only been used for household cooking. Problem identification, socialization, product development, and modification are the methods used in this program. The problem that has been solved as a result of this community service program is the provision of a biogas-fueled electric generator with a capacity of 5 kWatt. To optimize the performance of the engine driving the electric generator, a few changes were made to the standard gasoline-fueled genset propulsion engine, including the construction of the fuel intake and the adjustment of the combustion chamber compression pressure. The KTT Sumber Sari, can use this capacity to support energy-independent cages.

Abstract

The emergence of Corona Virus Disease 19 (Covid-19) required a new method to control its spread. During this time, controlling COVID-19 was carried out by implementation of a sterilization chamber using a liquid-based disinfectant. However, the use of liquid-based disinfectants has been evaluated to be less effective because it allows disrupting the respiratory tract. Therefore, this work presents a negative pressure sterilization chamber using Ozone and UV-C lamp. Ozone has been recommended by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) as a substitute for liquid-based disinfectants. In addition, to maximize performance, the chambers are added with UV-C lamps. The negative pressure sterilization chamber with Ozone and ultraviolet lamps was successfully created with the main parts of the cubicle chamber, an Ozone generator, at least one ultraviolet lamp, exhaust fan, switch, and a timer. The negative pressure sterilization chamber with Ozone and ultraviolet lamps according to this work, where the Ozone supply from the Ozone generator is made automatically to the door opening and closing. The duration of the Ozone supply was regulated by a timer. Then, the ultraviolet lamp can be activated together with Ozone or independently. With the implementation of this sterilization chamber, the spread of the Covid-19 virus is expected to be suppressed in a safer way than using liquid-based disinfectants.

Abstract

Although the technology of fuel injection in motorcycles has reached ports and direct injection, motorcycles with carburetors are still used. In this research, the carburetor was modified by adding a swirling vane. This study is intended to provide an explanation regarding engine performance which includes torque, power, mileage, emissions, and engine oil temperature. The study begins with a review of the shape and flow characteristics of the swirling vane based on the largest flow according to previous studies. Then, a swirling vane is built and tested to ensure its optimal shape. The findings were compared with conventional carburetor-based engines that had not been treated. Experiments were also carried out on gasoline-ethanol to obtain optimal results and use them appropriately for alternative fuel applications. A comparison of data on torque, power, exhaust emissions, temperature, and mileage reveals that vehicles modified with swirling vanes have better performance. Furthermore, based on the results of gasoline-ethanol application tests, this design is only suitable for use up to E25.

Abstract

Waste Motor Oil (WMO) is a hazardous waste material with the potential to contaminate water, soil, and the atmosphere. The management and engineering of WMO have become imperative in modern society for both resource utilization and environmental protection. Maximizing the energy content of WMO poses a significant challenge for researchers, to solve environmentally friendly solutions. Direct combustion of WMO often results in incomplete combustion and elevated CO emissions. Therefore, this research aims to optimize the harnessing of WMO's energy potential through a furnace equipped with steam injection. The steam is generated by utilizing the heat energy produced during the WMO heating process. Our study demonstrates that steam injection in the WMO furnace is an effective method for maximizing energy content while simultaneously reducing CO emissions.
