Abstract

This study looked at the effectiveness of differentiated learning in enhancing students' mathematical outcomes by incorporating varied content, processes, and products. Employing a mixed-methods experimental design, the research hypothesized that differentiated instruction significantly influences students' performance in mathematics exams. The differentiation strategy involved altering the level of support in group discussions (process), adjusting the material's difficulty (content), and modifying the nature of student tasks (products). The participants comprised sixty-five fifth-grade students from public elementary schools. Data collection utilized interviews, document analysis, observations, and test questions, with the t-test and paired sample t-tests comparing pretest and post-test scores to assess the impact. The findings revealed that differentiation in content, process, and product significantly enhances student mathematical achievements, thereby supporting the initial hypothesis. This suggests that teachers should tailor instruction by varying the structure, support, and autonomy of task completion and product creation. Future research should expand the application of content, process, and product differentiation to a broader sample, including different mathematical materials and extending to high schools, to further validate these results and explore additional educational contexts.

Abstract

The willingness to communicate (WTC) of English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) students requires a complicated process, including motivational, contextual, metacognitive, and communicative factors. Neglecting the intricate interplay of these factors may impede the attainment of desired levels of student WTC, thus underscoring the need for comprehensive investigation. The purpose of this exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is to investigate the complex interplay of motivational, contextual, metacognitive, and communicative factors as predictors of situated WTC in the Indonesian EFL context, which includes variables such as motivation, learner agency, growth language mindset, classroom environment, metacognition, communication confidence, and L2 self-perceived communicative competence (SPCC). We used Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) model analysis in a quantitative study design. An online questionnaire with 50 items adapted from prior studies was distributed to 310 EFL students from multiple universities in Indonesia who had taken English classes. The data revealed that motivation, learner agency, growth language mindset, classroom environment, metacognition, communication confidence, and SPCC are major determinants of students WTC. These findings suggest that EFL educators can create language learning programs that encourage active involvement in communication tasks and enhance students WTC by recognizing and utilizing the factors that support it. This could lead to more effective and engaging language learning experiences, resulting in increased WTC in the target language. Further discussion focuses on educational consequences and future research recommendations.

Abstract

This study presents the analysis of thermodynamic behavior and energy efficiency of a vapor compression refrigeration system with two types of condensers: air-cooled (ACC) and water-cooled (WCC). The main objective is to assess the system performance by comparing the Coefficient of Performance (COP) and Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) under both condenser configurations. During a 12-hour test period, data on refrigerant pressure, temperature, and electrical energy consumption were collected and analyzed. The results show that the WCC system outperforms the ACC system, showing a 5.7% increase in heat rejection and a 4.2% increase in cooling capacity. In addition, the WCC system exhibits a lower compressor duty cycle and consumes less electrical energy, resulting in a higher total EER of 5.658 compared to ACC of 1.945. These findings suggest that integrating a water-cooled condenser into a refrigeration system can significantly improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs, making it a viable option for commercial applications in tropical regions.

Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations in 2015, are a comprehensive global framework that addresses social, economic, and environmental challenges through sustainable development. This study examines the role of universities, specifically focusing on the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang (UNIMMA), in contributing to the SDGs. The study utilized data from Elsevier’s SciVal to analyze the department’s contribution to the SDGs through scientific publications in the Scopus database. A total of 97 out of 156 articles published by nine researchers from the department were found to contribute to various SDGs, with a significant focus on Goals 7 (affordable and clean energy), 17 (partnerships for the goals), 9 (industry, innovation, and infrastructure), and 12 (responsible consumption and production). The study highlights the department’s collaborative efforts and alignment with global sustainability goals. In addition, VOSviewer was used to map the research collaboration network within the department, revealing strong contributions to energy efficiency, sustainable technologies, and climate action. However, the department's research shows limited contribution to social SDGs such as poverty alleviation and gender equality. By mapping the university’s contributions to the SDGs, this study helps faculty members identify opportunities for targeted research collaborations, address gaps in SDG contributions, and enhance partnerships with researchers from other institutions, thus broadening the university’s impact on global sustainable development goals.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of a national virtual professional development (VPD) programme in Indonesia, lasting over four months and involving a diverse cohort of teachers. Utilising a sequential explanatory mixed method design within an interpretivist paradigm, it aimed to assess the programmes effectiveness in enhancing in-service EFL teachers pedagogical skills. The participants of this study were 76 in-service EFL teachers attending the Teacher Profession Education Programme (TPEP) over four months at a reputable private university in Jakarta, Indonesia. The study combined quantitative analyses of surveys and test scoresusing descriptive statistics to examine perceptions of the programmes usefulness, content, design, and learning outcomes, and bivariate correlation to assess the relationships with test scoreswith qualitative insights from the written interviews, which were analysed through deductive thematic analysis. Quantitative findings showed a high perceived efficacy of the TPEP (M = 3.96, SD = .55), with high ratings for perceived usefulness (M = 4.00, SD = .69), course content and design (M = 3.98, SD = .72), and learning outcomes (M = 3.91, SD = .55). However, no significant correlations were found between perceived efficacy and test scores (r = .06, p = .60) despite the strong correlations found among the perception variables themselves (e.g., usefulness and design: r = .88, p .001). Qualitative findings echoed these results, highlighting the programmes flexibility, improved pedagogical knowledge, and confidence, alongside issues like inconsistent guidance and technological challenges.

Abstract

A plethora of studies has examined EFL learners attitudes towards and perceptions of English pronunciation, yet little has been discussed about the influence of religious backgrounds on ones pronunciation abilities, especially in the Thai context. This study aims to extend the research area by studying Buddhist and Muslim EFL learners attitudes and perspectives about their English pronunciation abilities in Thailand. Using a mixed-method design, it collected survey data from 60 undergraduate students (50% Buddhist, 50% Muslim) at a university in south Thailand. An English pronunciation test was conducted to gather data on the students English pronunciation performances. The quantitative findings revealed that Buddhist and Muslim Thai EFL learners possessed moderate levels of attitudes towards their English pronunciation and perceived indirect influences of their religion on their English pronunciation. Although the learners attitudes and perceptions were connected, they were not significant predictors of their actual English pronunciation. Religion and gender had no direct impact on the learners attitudes; however, their frequent religious practices have led to the awareness that students from some religious backgrounds can have an advantage in pronouncing some English sounds, letters, or words over their friends with a different religion. The results of this research also suggest that there is much more to be learned about the effects and contributions of religious backgrounds on learners English pronunciation among learners.
