Abstract

General Background: The digital era requires elementary school students to possess critical thinking as a foundational character to evaluate information and make reasoned decisions within learning processes. Specific Background: Project-based learning integrated with STEAM has been positioned as a relevant pedagogical context for fostering critical thinking, yet systematic assessment remains challenging at the elementary level. Knowledge Gap: Existing assessment instruments are predominantly conventional and lack robust psychometric validation to comprehensively measure critical thinking characteristics in STEAM-oriented project learning. Aims: This study aims to validate a critical thinking character assessment instrument for elementary school students using Rasch Model analysis within project-based STEAM learning in the digital era. Results: From 29 developed items, 20 items met Rasch validity criteria, with person reliability of 0.82, item reliability of 0.98, and a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.81, indicating strong internal consistency and effective differentiation of student ability levels. Novelty: This study presents a psychometrically validated instrument specifically designed to assess critical thinking character in elementary school students through STEAM-based project learning using Rasch Model analysis. Implications: The validated instrument provides teachers with an objective and systematic assessment tool to monitor and develop students’ critical thinking character in alignment with the demands of digital-era elementary education. Highlights • The instrument demonstrated high person and item reliability through Rasch analysis• Valid items represented five dimensions of critical thinking character• Assessment results supported objective differentiation of student ability levels Keywords Critical Thinking; Rasch Model; Project Based Learning; STEAM Education; Elementary School

Abstract

The pedagogical challenge in health vocational education lies in preventing the reduction of Civic Education to a mere formalistic exercise that fails to influence professional behavior. This study investigates the construction of Pancasila values through the implementation of Moral Inquiry as a deliberative instructional strategy designed to foster prosocial character among health vocational students. We explored the lived experiences of eight participants from Speech Therapy, Radiodiagnostic and Radiotherapy, and Hospital Administration programs who engaged in a systematic value internalisation process. By utilizing professional ethical dilemmas as the primary stimulus for cognitive disequilibrium, the research sought to move students beyond conventional rule-following toward a post-conventional civic disposition. Adopting a transcendental descriptive phenomenological approach, we focused on the structural and textural descriptions of the students' moral development. Our findings indicate that the construction of prosocial character is achieved through a rigorous process of ego reduction where the students’ self-oriented professional motives are surrendered to the civic imperatives of humanity and social justice. We identified a critical transition from theoretical value recognition to a habitual "moral automation" where prosociality becomes a core component of the students' vocational identity. This study demonstrates that the integration of civic values into specialized vocational training creates a "moral-technical synthesis" that empowers students to act as moral agents within the healthcare system. We conclude that this deliberative pedagogy is essential for developing a workforce that embodies the ethical spirit of the state philosophy while maintaining technical excellence in their respective health fields.

Abstract

Abstract

In the face of moral decline and the impact of digital culture, enhancing religious character has emerged as a paramount objective in vocational education. Theoretical techniques in the classroom are frequently ineffective without regular practice. This study seeks to investigate the incorporation of habit-forming techniques to develop students' religious character at SMKN 1 Ciamis, West Java. This research employs a qualitative methodology. Data were gathered through observation, comprehensive interviews with the principal, Islamic Education instructors, and students, and documentation analysis. Data analysis was performed via data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion formulation utilizing source triangulation methods. The findings indicated that the incorporation of habit formation techniques was executed through three categories of habits: (1) spiritual habits, (2) social habits, and (3) environmental and health-related habits. Systematic school rules and oversight facilitated this integration. Habituation techniques have proven effective in transforming religious beliefs from mere cognition into observable behavior. The efficacy of this program is significantly dependent on the uniformity of the school environment and on educators' and students' collaboration in fostering a religious ambiance.

Abstract

In today's world, the development of digital technology and social media has had a major impact on communication patterns, including the use of language. The language used in digital interactions often pays little attention to politeness norms. Seeing this problem, this study aims to develop politeness in language and communication, especially for students in elementary schools. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological design through interview techniques with twenty students at the Az-Zahra Character Elementary School. Then get the results in the form of facts of violations of politeness in schools, this can be seen from every utterance or sentence and interaction between teachers and students or students with students that are expressed while in the school environment. Therefore, it is hoped that teachers can become prototypes of politeness in schools as a shaper of national character. This can be done by integrating positive politeness values in learning at school so that it is more optimal and of course useful in building harmonious relationships or establishing closeness between teachers and students which is where the teacher as a motivator and gives attention to students, or students with students  for example, being able to cooperate in academic activities and be active in study group.

Abstract

Harmonious living in a diverse society presents complex challenges due to the potential for significant conflict. Radicalism, intolerance, and social conflict often occur, especially concerning religious pluralism. Educational institutions, which are expected to build the nation's character, are also prone to religion's education labeling. Hence, Christian religious education had two choices: strengthen dogmatic teaching or embrace inclusive values. This research focuses on the importance of inclusive values as the foundation for Christian Religious Education. Through descriptive analysis of various literature, this study discusses the theological basis for inclusive values in the context of the Church and its implications for Christian religious education. The research results show that the value of inclusion is based on the reflection of the incarnation and the example of encountering dialogue, which forms the foundation for inclusive Christian Religious Education.

Abstract

This research investigates the phenomenon of Form Over Substance (FOS) in Indonesian pre-service teacher education. Drawing on survey data from 347 students and focus group discussions with 15 participants, we inductively developed the Perceived Form Over Substance (PFOS) instrument, an exploratory scale with three dimensions: formalism, image management, and outcome preoccupation. Regression analyses show that systemic pressure for procedural certainty is the strongest predictor of PFOS orientations, outweighing dispositional traits such as the need for social validation. Qualitative findings deepen this picture: students describe ritualized learning, emotional labor in sustaining compliant identities, and grades functioning as social currency under familial surveillance. These patterns suggest that FOS is less a failure of motivation than a systemic outcome of governance regimes that operate through metrics, mimicry, and outsourced compliance. The PFOS instrument offers a preliminary, context-grounded tool for capturing the subjective experience of performative governance. PFOS is not a failure of will but a rational adaptation to systemic pressure, where compliance is not chosen but compelled. Reform requires reconfiguring performative policy technologies, preserving accountability while reducing reliance on forms and metrics, and re-centering teacher education on reflection, substantive evaluation, and meaningful pedagogy.
