Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the coal quality features and geological conditions in Klasari Village, Moisegen District, Sorong Regency, South-west Papua Province. Coal in the study area occurs as intercalations within claystone units and exhibits physical characteristics indicating a low degree of coalification. Laboratory testing was conducted using proximate analysis to determine coal quality parameters, including moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, and fixed carbon. The results show moisture values ranging from 6.21 to 13.95%, ash content from 2.1 to 14.4%, volatile matter from 33.7 to 38.3%, fixed carbon from 6 to 6.9%, and calorific values between 3,379 and 3,710 kcal/kg. Based on the ASTM D388 classification, the coal from the study area is classified as lignite. These findings indicate that the coal was formed in a swamp–fluvial depositional environment under reductive conditions that were not favorable for further coalification processes. Therefore, the coal is considered low-rank and is more suitable for small-scale energy utilization or low-power industrial applications.

Abstract

The spatial distribution of surface erosion on corn fields in Boalemo Regency, Gorontalo Province is a significant concern. Boalemo Regency is known for its corn production, but the land clearing for corn cultivation, especially on steep slopes, has led to land degradation, triggering floods and landslides. This study aims to examine the spatial distribution of surface erosion on corn agricultural land in Boalemo Regency, covering all corn plantations in an area of 181,672.83 hectares. The RUSLE (Revised USLE) method was used to analyze soil erosion. The analysis of surface erosion levels was conducted based on the stages of corn planting, including the land preparation and planting stages. The results indicated that the total erosion during the land preparation stage was 2474870411 tons per year, while during the corn planting stage, it was 1150961410 tons per year. The level of erosion was found to be very severe, covering an area of 46706.92 hectares (25.71%) during the land preparation stage and 33852.80 hectares (18.63%) during the planting stage.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 by improving community access to alternative water resources through rainwater harvesting. The program aimed to implement an Appropriate Technology-Based Rainwater Harvesting System (RHS) in Modelidu Village, Telaga Biru District, Gorontalo Regency, using a participatory community empowerment approach. Activities were conducted over six weeks through community outreach, hands-on training, prototype construction, and post-installation assistance involving 50 community members. The implemented RHS prototype integrates a rooftop catchment system, a first-flush diverter, a multi-layer natural filtration unit, and a modular storage tank with a base capacity of 250 L that can be expanded to 1,000 L. Initial observations showed that the system achieved a rainwater collection efficiency of 70–80% and filtration performance up to 10 μm, while improving participants’ knowledge and practical skills in operating and maintaining the system. Harvested rainwater was utilized for non-potable domestic purposes, including washing and plant irrigation. The program demonstrates that integrating appropriate technology with participatory community empowerment provides an effective, affordable, and replicable solution for strengthening household water security in rural communities.

Abstract

Soil erosion is a major problem on sloping land that can reduce soil fertility and agricultural productivity. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of palm fiber (ijuk) nets and corn plants in controlling soil erosion on land with a slope of approximately 57° in Bina Jaya Village, Tolangohula District, Gorontalo Regency. The method used was a field experiment with three treatments: Plot I (ijuk net + corn), Plot II (ijuk net), and Plot III (without treatment). The observed data included rainfall, soil erosion mass, and corn growth used to calculate the Leaf Area Index (LAI). The results showed that Plot I produced the lowest soil erosion (16.8 kg), followed by Plot II (23.7 kg), and Plot III (84.5 kg). Rainfall had a direct influence on increasing soil erosion, especially on untreated land. Increasing LAI values contributed to reducing erosion by improving soil cover and reducing runoff. The effectiveness of the ijuk net reached 80.1% when combined with vegetation and 71.9% without vegetation. Therefore, the combination of ijuk net and corn plants is proven to be an effective, simple, economical, and sustainable soil conservation method for sloping land.

Abstract

Small-scale mining in Juriya Village has long been the main source of income for the community. However, the traditional mining methods used still disregard the principles of good environmental management, resulting in environmental pollution, particularly tailings waste that has contaminated nearby rivers. Survey results at the mining site show that several mining drums are not equipped with tailings settling ponds that meet standards, resulting in tailings waste seeping into river flows. To address this issue, community service activities were carried out with the aim of increasing the understanding and awareness of the community and miners regarding the impact of tailings pollution and the importance of responsible waste management. These activities included socialization, education, and training on the construction of tailings settling ponds. The results of these activities showed an 88% increase in community understanding of the environmental hazards of tailings, as well as increased community knowledge about the process of constructing compartmentalized tailings settling ponds. This demonstrates the important role of socialization, education, and training in effective tailings waste management efforts.

Abstract

Carbon footprinting and greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting are now widely applied to solid waste management (SWM), yet evidence remains fragmented across technologies, waste streams, and regional contexts. This systematic literature review synthesizes 50 Scopus-indexed journal articles (2017–2025) that quantify the carbon outcomes of SWM options using life-cycle assessment, carbon accounting, and sce-nario modeling. We compare methodological choices (functional units, boundaries, impact methods, avoided burdens), benchmark core treatment technologies (landfilling, incineration/WtE, composting, anaerobic digestion, mechanical-biological treatment), assess circular pathways (recycling, substitution, eco-design), and identify regionally differentiated transition archetypes shaped by governance and ener-gy-system decarbonization. Across studies, technology rankings are highly sensitive to methane dynamics, landfill gas capture and oxidation, grid emission factors, and substitution assumptions. Circular strategies frequently deliver the largest net savings when high-quality sorting and credible displacement of virgin production are achieved, while WtE benefits are context-dependent and generally increase in fossil-intensive grids. The review proposes an integrative comparison framework that links method choices to technology performance and regional pathway feasibility, providing more comparable, decision-relevant evidence for low-carbon SWM planning.
