Abstract

Introduction: Adolescent health will impact future well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted governmental imposition of restrictions on social activities. Hence, understanding the lifestyle factors, such as sedentary activities and fruit and vegetable consumption, affecting adolescents' nutritional status during the pandemic is crucial. In Samarinda, more than 18% of adolescents have inadequate nutritional status. Aims: to explore the relationship between sedentary activities, fruit and vegetable consumption, and the nutritional status of adolescents. Method: Using an online questionnaire, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 high school students during the COVID-19 pandemic, between October and December 2021. Sedentary activity levels were assessed using the Adolescent Sedentary Activity Questionnaire (ASAQ), while fruit and vegetable consumption was evaluated through the FFQ-SQ (Food Frequency Questionnaire-Semi Quantitative). Nutritional status was determined using z score of body mass index (BMI) for age. Data analysis employed the Chi-square test and Fisher exact test. Results: Gender, maternal occupation, and average monthly parental income were found to be associated with nutritional status (p=0.020; p=0.038; p=0.045). However, no significant association was observed between fruit and vegetable consumption and nutritional status (p=0.102; p=0.121). Certain sedentary activities, such as doing assignments without using a laptop/computer (p=0.029) and reading for pleasure (p=0.038), were linked to nutritional status. Fruit and vegetable consumption showed no association with the nutritional status of adolescents. Conclusion: Conversely, certain sedentary activities were found to be associated with nutritional status. Educating adolescents within families and schools regarding the significance of physical activity and balanced nutrition is imperative.

Abstract

Abstract

Mine workers are a group that is vulnerable to various health problems, particularly lung function disorders caused by dust exposure in the work environment. Nutritional knowledge plays a significant role in maintaining lung health. This community service aims to improve nutritional knowledge related to Occupational Safety and Health (K3) to prevent lung function disorders in mine workers at PT X Coal Division. The method used was action research with a cross-sectional approach involving 28 respondents. A structured questionnaire was employed as a pre-test and post-test instrument, consisting of 10 true-false items assessing knowledge about the importance of nutrition and the application of OHS principles in the workplace. Nutrition education was delivered in the form of interactive counselling sessions. Data were analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to determine differences in knowledge before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant improvement in knowledge: prior to counselling, 75% of respondents had moderate knowledge, whereas after counselling, 96.4% demonstrated good knowledge. This indicates that the nutrition education program was effective in enhancing workers' understanding of nutrition and occupational health. A continuous and structured counselling program is recommended to sustain awareness and encourage preventive behaviors among mine workers.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with 90– 95% of cases classified as essential hypertension. According to data on noncommunicable or degenerative diseases in East Kalimantan, 595,689 individuals over the age of 15 were projected to suffer from hypertension in 2023. Several factors contribute to the prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia, including age, sex, family history of hypertension, educational level, occupation, place of residence, nutrition and lifestyle, and physical activity. The aim of this study was to examine the association between individual characteristics and nutritional status with the risk of hypertension among employees of the Class I Health Quarantine Office (Balai Karantina Kesehatan/BKK) in Samarinda, aged between 27 and 57 yearsMethods: This research employed a cross-sectional design involving 47 civil servants, comprising both permanent (PNS) and contract-based (PPPK) staff. Blood pressure and nutritional status (body mass index) data were obtained through direct measurements conducted in March 2025 at the BKK Class I Samarinda Office. The findings of this study indicate a significant association between individual characteristics specifically age and nutritional status and the incidence of hypertension among the employees.

Abstract

Background: The WHO (2019) reported that approximately 10% of pregnant women and 13% of postpartum women globally experience maternal mental health disorders. Several studies have identified unintended pregnancy as a contributing factor to these disorders. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze and estimate the association between unintended pregnancy and maternal mental health disorders (MHD), using studies that applied the WHO Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20).Subjects and Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42025634410). Article searches were conducted up to January 15, 2025, in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Scopus using the keywords: “SRQ” AND (“mental health” OR “psychological well-being” OR “mental disorder”) AND (“unwanted pregnancy” OR “unintended pregnancy” OR “unplanned pregnancy”) AND (“mother” OR “maternal”). Inclusion criteria focused on observational studies using the WHO SRQ-20 to assess maternal mental health among women with unintended and intended pregnancies. Meta-analysis was performed using R Studio, with effect sizes reported as risk ratios (RR) or adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I² statistic, and funnel plots were generated to examine publication bias. Results: A total of 12 studies from Ethiopia, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Brazil, and Malawi, comprising 85,862 participants, were included in this meta-analysis. A total of 12 studies with a total of 85,862 participants were analyzed in this meta-analysis. The results showed that unintended pregnancy significantly increased the risk of maternal MHD. This finding was consistent in both cohort and cross-sectional studies, with effect sizes of (RR = 1.49; CI95%= 1.03 to 2.15; p= 0.030) and (aOR= 1.83; CI95%= 1.35 to 2.47; p < 0.001), respectively. Conclusion: These findings highlight the strong association between unintended pregnancy and MHD. Limitations include high heterogeneity among studies, potential publication bias, and the predominance of observational designs, which preclude causal inferences. Despite these limitations, the results underscore the need for interventions that prioritize the overall health of pregnant women.
