Abstract

Background: Mumps is a contagious disease caused by paramyxovirus infection that primarily affects children and adolescents. In 2024, a surge of mumps cases was reported in Samarinda, particularly at Sekolah Dasar Normal Islam Samarinda. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of mumps cases based on age, sex, and epidemiological distribution at the school during October–November 2024.Methods: This descriptive observational study utilized primary and secondary data. Purposive sampling was applied to include students who met the clinical diagnostic criteria for mumps, identified through school health reports and direct observation. Data collection covered number of cases, age, sex, symptoms, and transmission patterns. Analysis was performed descriptively using Microsoft Excel. A total of 78 students were identified with mumps symptoms. The index case was reported on October 3, 2024, in a male fifth-grade student presenting parotid gland swelling, fever, and history of close contact within the past 25 days. Results: The majority of cases occurred among male students (61.5%), particularly those in grades 5 and 6, with 11 years old being the most affected group. The most common clinical manifestations included fever and parotid gland swelling. Notably, none of the students had received the MMR vaccination. The epidemic curve showed a sharp increase in October 2024, followed by a decline in November, with an overall attack rate of 12.5%.Conclusion: Low immunization coverage, overcrowded classrooms, and delays in early detection played a significant role in facilitating transmission within the school. Strengthening vaccination programs, implementing health education, improving hygiene protocols, and ensuring early isolation of suspected cases are recommended to control and prevent further mumps outbreaks in school settings. Keywords: Mumps; epidemiology; imunization; disease prevention; school children

Abstract

Stunting is a serious health issue in Indonesia, with long-term impacts on children's development. SSGI 2022 data shows a national prevalence of 21.6%, down from the previous year but still above the WHO standard and the 2024 target. In East Kalimantan, the prevalence of stunting reached 23.9% in 2022, up from the previous year and a concern as the province will become the new capital city. Stunting impacts brain development and the risk of long-term chronic diseases, influenced by maternal education and employment, as well as limited nutritional knowledge and parenting time. This analytical observational study with a case-control design was conducted in December 2023 at Gunung Sari Ulu Primary Healthcare working area with 30 respondents (15 cases, 15 controls) selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and assessment of children's nutritional status measurements using a microtoise and infantometer . Stunting is defined as a height or length below -2 SD (WHO). Data analysis was performed using chi-square tests to assess the relationship between variables. No association was found between child gender and stunting (P-value = 1). Mothers with low education levels had a 1.313 times higher risk of having stunted children (P-value = 0.713). Although not statistically significant, non-working mothers had a 2.364 times higher risk of having stunted children compared to working mothers (P-value = 0.651). No significant relationship was found between child gender and stunting incidence. Maternal education and employment status are identified as risk factors for stunting, although not statistically significant.

Abstract

Stunting is a disorder of children's growth and development caused by chronic malnutrition and recurrent infections during the First 1000 Days of Life (HPK). Health workers at health centers, as part of the nutrition team, play a significant role in implementing effective interventions to reduce stunting rates. One of the trainings provided to health workers is the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) and Severe Acute Malnutrition training. This study aimed to measure changes in the knowledge of health workers before and after receiving the IMCI and Severe Acute Malnutrition training. This pre-experimental study involved 84 health workers from three cities in East Kalimantan. The training utilized interactive lectures, role play,  assignments, and practice sessions. A paired t-test was used to analyze the data. A significant increase in knowledge was observed before and after the training (p-value = 0.0001). It was concluded that the IMCI and Severe Acute Malnutrition Training was effective in enhancing the knowledge of health workers. Therefore, it remains essential as a routine training effort to prevent stunting.
