Abstract

The conversion of forest land to agriculture has affected the ecosystem in the upstream area of Way Betung Watershed, including Tanjung Agung Village. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge, community participation, and agroforestry land conservation. The study was conducted on 30 respondents using a structured questionnaire, the results of which were analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test. The results showed that the level of community knowledge was in the moderate category (mean score 2.3), while the level of participation was high (mean score 3.7). The level of agroforestry land conservation was recorded in the moderate to high category (mean score 3.3). Correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between knowledge and community participation (ρ = 0.414, p = 0.023) with sufficient closeness, but no significant relationship was found between knowledge and land conservation (ρ = 0.219, p = 0.245) or participation and land conservation (ρ = 0.291, p = 0.119). This study highlights that increasing community participation has great potential to support the success of agroforestry conservation, although the contribution of knowledge needs to be strengthened. The novelty of this research lies in the in-depth analysis of the level of relationship between social variables in supporting agroforestry-based conservation in the strategic upstream area of the Way Betung Watershed.

Abstract

The conversion of land in urban areas, especially Green Open Space (GOS), into development land causes green land to decrease, coupled with the increasing volume of vehicles. The rapid activity of manufacturing plants and excessive energy consumption are contributing factors to the increase in CO2 in the air, and the quantity and quality of O2 is declining. Green Open Space or city park is an open space that has ecological benefits, the space is filled by trees that form vegetation, socio-cultural benefits as a forum for interaction between visitors, architectural and aesthetic benefits for the beauty of the city that can provide benefits in the form of recreational and tourist spaces for the community. The existence of RTH will improve air quality and comfort in densely populated areas. The method used is to calculate the Temperature Humidity Index (THI). The research aims to analyze the temperature and humidity that affect the comfort level of GOS in Gedong Tataan. Data is taken in October 2023. The results showed that the highest temperature was found in Gedong Tataan Park, which was 34.4 oC, and the lowest temperature was found in Jejama Sidototo Park, which was 25.8 oC. The difference in temperature and air humidity in the two RTHs in Gedong Tataan District is caused by differences in the composition of vegetation types. The diversity of vegetation types can reduce air temperature and increase humidity to provide comfort in both GOSs.

Abstract

Land cover change is one of the major contributors to environmental degradation and can significantly alter the physical environment. These alterations in the physical environment may have substantial implications for human health. One of the notable health impacts associated with such changes is the increased incidence of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis cases are linked to the proliferation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which thrives in environments with high humidity levels. This study employs linear regression analysis to examine the influence of various types of land cover—namely, plantation areas, mixed agriculture, residential zones, and rice fields—on tuberculosis incidence. Additionally, the study incorporates Human Development Index (HDI) and economic growth rate as proxies for human development in Lampung Province. The findings, based on t-test statistical analysis, reveal that plantation land cover (P-value = 0.045) and the rate of economic growth (P-value = 0.001) have a statistically significant effect on tuberculosis incidence in the region. In contrast, other land use types and the Human Development Index do not exhibit a significant relationship with the number of tuberculosis cases. Based on these results, it is recommended that the government formulate credible and evidence-based regulations concerning future land use planning.

Abstract

Berbak and Sembilang National Parks are conservation areas that become habitats for various types of plants and animals, including birds. This stud ypurpose to find species diversity, species evenness, species richness, dominance, species abundance and bird conservation status in Simpang Village. Data collection was carried out using the point count method and transect as many as 3 points which were assumed to represent one ecosystem, namely swamp ecosystems, shrubs and water bodies. The results obtained were 36 types of birds from 22 families. The value of the diversity index in the type of swamp ecosystem of 2,295 and the water body of 2,940 is in the medium category and the shrub ecosystem of 3,754 is relatively high. The three types of ecosystems have a stable distribution of types ranging from 0.21 < E < 1, no species dominate, but have a varied wealth of species, namely in low swamp ecosystems, medium shrub ecosystems and high water body ecosystems. This is due to the existence of three different types of ecosystems in the village, so that each ecosystem has a diverse species composition. Thus, Simpang Village is still classified as having a well-maintained diversity of birds, but still has to make efforts to conserve birds so that the bird population does not decrease, one of which is through continuous counseling by involving parties to educate and increase public awareness in the conservation of birds and their habitats.

Abstract

Vegetation is essential for birds to fulfil their life requirements. Monoculture coffee plantations, coffee-based agroforestry systems, and forests in HKm Wana Jaya provide potential habitats for various animal species, including birds. This research assessed bird diversity, richness, evenness, species dominance, feeding guilds, and conservation status across these three land cover types. The point count method was employed for data collection. Data were quantitatively analysed using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, the Margalef richness index, the Pielou evenness index, and the Simpson dominance index. The study recorded 35 bird species from 19 families comprising 167 individuals. Species diversity values across all three land cover types fell within the moderate category, with forest exhibiting the highest value (2.988), followed by coffee agroforestry (2.648) and monoculture coffee (2.035). The highest species richness was found in the forest (5.429) and the lowest in monoculture coffee (2.970). The highest species evenness was recorded in coffee agroforestry (0.935) and the lowest in monoculture coffee (0.849), while species dominance values across all three land cover types were categorised as low (0.061-0.172). Insectivorous birds dominated feeding guilds across all habitat types, revealing unexpected ecological resilience. Of the species recorded, 29 are classified as Least Concern, two as Vulnerable, four as Near Threatened, while 10 species are protected under national legislation, and three species are listed in CITES Appendix II. The findings suggest that while forests maintain the highest biodiversity value, coffee agroforestry systems can provide crucial supplementary bird conservation habitats in modified landscapes.

Abstract

Developing environmental services in protected forests can be done in various ways, such as developing natural tourism, planting trees to reduce carbon emissions, and managing water resources. The approach used in this study is qualitative with the desk research method. The development of environmental services in protected forests can be carried out through various approaches, such as community-based forest management, partnerships between government and the private sector, and the use of information and communication technology. The development of environmental services can increase people's income by increasing the economic value of products produced from protected forests, assisting in maintaining sustainable management of natural resources, and increasing the availability of natural resources that are beneficial for human life and the ecosystem. The main challenges in managing environmental services are lack of access to capital and technology, as well as lack of public awareness and participation in managing natural resources. There are opportunities for developing environmental services in protected forests, such as increasing public awareness of the importance of preserving protected forests and advances in information and communication technology that can be used in developing environmental services. The development of environmental services in protected forests through social forestry programs is a solution to maintain human survival and preserve protected forests. This program provides economic, social and technological benefits for local communities and encourages sustainable forest management, as well as increasing community awareness in preserving forest functions.

Abstract

Coffee agroforestry in protected forest areas has the potential to be operated as a nature tourism destination. The purpose of this study was to analyze the feasibility of coffee agroforestry in the KPHL Batutegi area as a nature tourism area. Data collection was conducted by field observation and interviews using questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out using a modification of the Directorate General of Nature Tourism Object Operations (ADO-ODTWA) guidelines in 2003. The results showed that the potential of coffee agroforestry in KPHL Batutegi bordering Penantian Village and Sinar Banten Village has a medium potential value index. This means that the coffee agroforestry area in KPHL Batutegi has criteria that are not yet feasible to develop, because the element of accessibility (infrastructure), especially in the type of road taken with poor road conditions, makes it difficult to access the coffee agroforestry area. Tourism objects in the medium classification can be developed because a lot of planning is needed in structuring a good area in the future.

Abstract

This study examines the determinants influencing farmer participation in forest farmer groups (Kelompok Tani Hutan—KTH) within the jurisdiction of the Forest Management Unit (KPH) Way Terusan. Primary data were collected through structured surveys and in-depth interviews with 50 respondents, comprising both KTH members and non-members, during the period from August to September 2024. The study employs descriptive statistical analysis and Likert scale assessments to evaluate the socio-economic characteristics, institutional dynamics, and social factors that shape participation behavior. The findings reveal that the principal motivation for farmers to engage with KTH lies in securing legal access to forest resources through the Social Forestry Program, which fosters sustainable forest management practices and aims to enhance community livelihoods. Key factors affecting participation include perceived economic benefits, the effectiveness of institutional support provided by KPH Way Terusan, and the strength of social capital within local communities. However, despite these incentives, several critical barriers to effective participation remain, including limited market access for forest products, varying degrees of trust in KTH governance structures, and insufficient extension and capacity-building services. These results highlight the imperative to strengthen institutional frameworks and develop market-oriented support mechanisms to enhance the effectiveness of KTH in promoting sustainable forest management and improving socio-economic resilience among forest-dependent communities.

Abstract

Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park (Tahura WAR) is a conservation forestarea that serves as a source of water resources that the community utilizes daily. This research analyzes the characteristics influencing people's willingness to payfor water environmental services in the Tahura WAR. This research wasconducted from October to November 2024. The research location is based onboth villages, where water users are from the Tahura WAR area. Based on thisresearch, the results obtained show that the characteristics of respondents' age, occupation, income, water source, and the amount of water demand/day positivelyinfluence the willingness to pay of the community. The variable that has asignificant influence is income. In contrast, the variables of age, occupation, watersource, and the number of water needs/day do not significantly influence the valueof the willingness of the community of water environmental service users in WanAbdul Rachman Forest Park. This research is expected to make a scientificcontribution to developing studies on environmental economics, especially in thecontext of willingness to pay for water environmental services. The results of thisstudy are expected to be a reference for future researchers who are examiningsocial, economic, and environmental factors
