Abstract

This study introduces IT-BISA (IT-Based Integrated Skills Approach), an innovative pedagogical approach to improve EFL university students’ English proficiency and digital literacy. IT-BISA integrates all four language skills with digital tools, creating a learning environment that supports language development and digital competence. This study aims to explore how IT-BISA was implemented in a TEFL course and examine its perceived impact from both the teacher’s and students’ perspectives. A qualitative research design included students’ views and the teacher’s reflective journals (early, middle, and end-of-semester). While simple percentage data were used to describe student responses, the primary analysis involved thematic analysis of reflections and survey comments. The findings revealed that 86% of students reported improvement in speaking confidence, 80% perceived progress in reading comprehension, and 90% indicated increased ability to use digital tools for academic purposes. Additionally, 88% described the learning experience as engaging and motivating. The students showed notable growth in English proficiency and confidence, particularly in speaking and reading. Moreover, their ability to use digital tools for learning also improved. Students viewed the IT-BISA-based learning as engaging, practical, and motivating. Thematic findings further reveal increased classroom interaction, stronger learner agency, and greater responsibility for independent learning. Teacher reflections also identified challenges related to technological adaptation and varying levels of digital readiness. The approach contributes to ongoing conversations about meaningful technology integration and an integrated skills approach in language education.

Abstract

This study addresses a limitation in digital collaborative writing research by positioning digital competence as a moderating mechanism shaping students’ participation in Padlet-based collaborative academic writing, rather than treating it as a background learner characteristic. Previous studies have mainly examined learning outcomes or engagement when using collaborative platforms, with limited attention to how differences in digital competence influence collaborative interaction processes in technology-mediated writing environments. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, this study involved 30 undergraduate students in an Academic Writing course at a private Indonesian university. Data were collected through a digital competence questionnaire, pre- and post-writing tests, and semi-structured interviews. The findings show that Padlet supported improvements in idea organization, peer interaction, and higher-order writing performance, while digital competence shaped students’ interaction strategies and participation patterns. This study contributes by demonstrating that digital competence is a key mechanism influencing collaborative writing participation in higher education digital learning environments.

Abstract

This study examines the quality of students’ arguments in argumentative podcasts by applying the Toulmin Argument Model. Although previous research has largely focused on written works such as essays, this study fills a research gap by providing empirical evidence on how arguments are constructed through video podcasts in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, the researcher analyzed 28 argumentative podcasts produced by 12th-grade students at a state high school in Semarang. The analysis categorized the arguments into four levels of quality: Incomplete, Semi-Complete, Almost-Complete, and Complete. The results indicate that the incomplete pattern (consisting only of a claim and supporting data) was the most frequent, appearing in 10 units of podcasts (36%). The nearly complete pattern was found in 7 units (25%), the semi-complete pattern with 6 units (21%), and the complete pattern was found in 5 units (18%). These findings indicate varying levels of ability among high school students in presenting structured arguments in digital formats. This highlights the need for sustained guidance to maximize the use of podcasts in constructing comprehensive arguments in digital media.
