Abstract

This study analyzes the translation of culture-bound words in the novel Cantik Itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan and its English version, Beauty is A Wound, translated by Annie Tucker.  The study aims to identify the techniques used in culture-bound words and the resulting quality. The culture-bound words category was analyzed using Newmark, (1988). Meanwhile, the theory of translation techniques proposed by Molina & Albir, (2002) used to identify translation techniques applied by translators in translating culture-bound words. Text studies, reading, taking notes, and in-depth analysis using table instruments are all part of this qualitative research approach. Further, the author used accuracy, acceptability, and readability rating instruments based on Larson, (1998) to determine the translation quality of culture-bound words. The finding showed 434 culture-bound words found in this novel, and 14 translation techniques were identified, with the established equivalent being most frequent at 36.81%. Moreover, the average accuracy was 88.99%, clarity was 82.24%, and naturalness was 79.80%. This research attempts to improve knowledge of the translation process and its function in cross-cultural communication by comprehending the translation techniques and quality that underlie the translation of culture-bound words.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore poetic identity in EFL poetry writing by EFL learners as to know their language development. Poetic identity is the representation of poetry as a language expression that serves as the representation of community sense. EFL learning in this context is the medium to produce the poetry from which the learners learn to invent their identity as to invent their language. This study is a case study with the subjects of study are 29 EFL learners in Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha who wrote poetry writing as their product of learning in poetry course. Each of them wrote 2 poetry which were analyzed based on the poetic identity analysis with Hanauers’ method. From the result of analysis, the voice of poetic identity represents the poets’ voice of self-identity in life (fear, love, and hope) and voice of freedom. This study also illustrates how language is developed to construct meaning and ideas within the mindful and meaningful literacy learning.

Abstract

Poetry translation presents a unique challenge, as it requires maintaining a delicate balance between semantic fidelity and the preservation of the aesthetic qualities of the target text. This study aims to evaluate the quality of poetry translations produced by university students both with and without the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI), using four assessment criteria based on Nababan's (2012) framework: accuracy, acceptability, readability, and poeticness. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach with an evaluation instrument using a three-point scale, where a score of 3 indicates high quality, 2 denotes moderate quality, and 1 reflects low quality. Data were obtained from poetry translations evaluated by experienced raters using a standardized rubric, with results analyzed in terms of frequency distribution and percentages. Findings reveal that in AI-assisted translations, the highest score attainment was observed in readability (52.76%), followed by acceptability (51.14%), accuracy (50.39%), and poeticness (24.34%) as the lowest. In contrast, in translations without AI, the highest score attainment was also found in readability (34.76%), followed by accuracy (33.06%), acceptability (32.43%), and poeticness (12.33%). This comparison indicates that AI use consistently enhances accuracy, acceptability, and readability scores, yet shows limited capacity to improve poeticness significantly. This aspect requires creativity, stylistic sensitivity, and nuanced linguistic judgment beyond the current capabilities of AI systems.

Abstract

This research investigates the use of language power by male and female characters in the movie Before Sunrise, directed by Richard Linklater. Utilizing Text-Oriented Discourse Analysis (TODA) in qualitative analysis, the study examines how Jesse and Celine assert language power, as categorized by Wareing (1999), through their language features, as identified by Lakoff (1975). The research aims to uncover patterns of language use that reflect gendered communication and power dynamics within the film. It explores the differences in the aims of language features utilization to assert power exhibited by the characters. The findings indicate that the linguistic features used by Jesse and Celine serve different goals, leading to shifts in power dynamics and promoting communicative strategies that support gender equality. These findings contrast with Ardener's muted group theory, which posits that marginalized groups, particularly women, often have their voices suppressed. In Before Sunrise, Celine's portrayal as a strong, independent, and assertive character challenges this notion by demonstrating that women can and do exercise significant language power. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of how language functions as a tool for power assertion within cinematic contexts, offering perspectives on gendered communication patterns and the representation of language power in movie as the product of contemporary literature.

Abstract

This study examines the manipulation of the text in Frances Hodgson Burnett's English novel "The Secret Garden," translated as "Taman Rahasia." This study aimed to determine whether the translator made specific manipulations during the translation, identify the types of manipulations present in the Indonesian translation, and evaluate the translation quality. The study belongs to qualitative research, which focuses on identifying text manipulations when translating to Indonesian. The analysis involved identifying text-internal manipulations, as arranged by Dukate (2007), which included alterations at the level of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs. The research's result found that three types of six text-internal manipulation were present in the Indonesian translation. The most frequent type of manipulation was conscious handling, with the translator frequently using the reduction/deletion technique proposed by Molina and Albir to modify the target text. It was observed that the translator mainly omitted unnecessary information from the source text due to cultural and linguistic considerations. Based on the findings, the quality of translation is good, which has been proved by the highest frequency for accuracy, readability, and acceptability in score 3. This study can also contribute to the implications for teachers and students in a classroom setting as they explore the translation of literary works for learning English, introduce the language culture in English and Indonesia, and realize what aspects may lead to manipulation in translating text.

Abstract

Speaking skills are one of the most important skills in English language learning. However, most students, especially at SMPN 1 Cepu, still lack self-confidence, have limited vocabulary, are passive in learning, and need to be more active in using English in daily conversations. This research implemented TikTok videos integrated into project-based learning. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of using TikTok in improving students’s motivation and speaking skills. This research includes a mixed-method type, quasi-experiment research design (quantitative research – t-test) and (qualitative research – interview and questionnaire). Statistical test to determine whether there is an influence of using TikTok videos on speaking skills through an independent sample t-test using SPSS 24. Meanwhile, a statistical test to determine whether there is an influence of using TikTok on student motivation is the Mann-Whitney test. Based on the results of statistical tests, an Asymp Sig (2-tailed) value of 0.001 or less than 0.05. This means that Ha is accepted. This means that there is an average difference between the experimental and control classes. There is a significant difference in the average score of speaking skills between the experimental class and the control class. Apart from that, there was a significant difference in the average motivation score between the experimental class and the control class. The implication of this research is TikTok can be used as a learning media that can motivate students and improve speaking skills.

Abstract

There are plenty of ways to utilise discourse in the field of language, for example in football commentary. It is natural, unplanned, free of scripts, and spontaneous. However, football discussion and commentary differ significantly from regular speech. The aim of this study is to compare the use of English discourse markers in sport-casting or football commentary by the British and American football commentators. This study used a qualitative study. The data were collected through a spoken discourse analysis from two (2) football match videos produced by British and American football commentators, which were transcribed into a text analysis and then determined the functions, types, and frequency of discourse markers. The finding showed that British commentators used discourse markers more frequently than the American commentators.

Abstract

This research examines the use of speech acts in YouTube videos by professional English communication trainers Learning a Language? Speak It Like You’re Playing a Video Game by Marianna Pascal and Think Fast. Talk Smart by Matt Abrahams. It compared speech acts utilized by the two professional trainers to explain how they effectively deliver their messages to diverse audiences. The analysis focused on identifying the realization, similarities, and differences in using Searle’s (1976) five types of speech acts. The data for this research consisted of words, phrases, clauses, or sentences containing speech acts spoken by Pascal and Abraham during their speeches. This research employed a qualitative research method to categorize and analyze the speech acts. The findings revealed the differences in their communication styles despite of the similar predominant use of representative and directive acts. Pascal’s narrative style was appealing and easy to understand compared to Abraham’s logical and authoritative approach. Pascal’s directives inspire self-reflection more, whereas Abraham’s were direct and effective. The research offers a comprehensive perspective on the speech act strategies employed by professional English communication trainers thereby making valuable contributions to speech act theory and its application in real-world contexts.

Abstract

TikTok is a social media that is currently becoming a trend center. One of TikTok's best features is live streaming with its mainstay content buying and selling. , commissive, directive, expressive, and declarative. Qualitative content analysis study was applied to analyze the illocutionary acts that appear in online communication via live streaming TikTok by the account @Carina's pen02. The data was collected through some stages including recording, transcribing, and classifying by using the SPEAKING (setting and scene, participants, endings, acts sequence, key, instrumentalities, norms, and genre) theory proposed by Dell Hyme (1972). Expert judgment was also involved in this study to guarantee the validity of the data. The four types of illocutionary acts were found in which the commissive is the most frequently used, followed by representative, directive, and expressive. Pragmatically, these findings improve understanding of speech acts in real-time digital interactions. Digital communications, it also provides strategies to increase audience engagement through the effective use of direction and expression. For online sellers, this research offers practical guidance on using persuasive language to build trust, drive sales, and maintain viewer interest during live streaming.

Abstract

The tourism industry requires every worker to have proficient English skills appropriate to their position. However, until now, tourism industry stakeholders still question the low communicative skills of tourism vocational school graduates in English. The study aims to critically evaluate the English language teaching materials used in tourism vocational high schools to analyze their suitability to student needs and the demands of the tourism industry. Using a retrospective evaluation methodology, data was carefully collected through documentation and interviews. Documentation is carried out to collect teaching materials used by schools, while interviews collect data regarding teachers' perceptions of these teaching materials. Qualitative data analysis was carried out using an interactive data analysis model. This research shows that although the material provided aligns with the national curriculum and focuses on everyday English communicative skills, the material still does not meet the particular needs of students preparing themselves for a career in the tourism sector. Teachers are aware of the significant gap between the general English skills taught and the specific English required of students. This study provides a basis for revising teaching materials to bridge this gap and ensure that they meet both general educational goals and the specific communicative demands of the tourism industry.
