Abstract

Blended learning as one of the suggested learning methods to be implemented during pandemic covid-19 era is more effective and efficient learning for current situaton and it increase the attractiveness of learning. However, blended learning also has its downside, such as media required is very diverse so there are some difficulties in applying it when the infrastructure does not support. This advantages and disadvantages resulted in essay writing class’ students having different perceptions on the blended learning. The purpose of this study is to find out students’ perceptions toward implementing Blended Learning method at English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang as well as its benefit for the students. This research used descriptive method. The sample for this research was 83 third semester essay writing class’ students of English Department in Universitas Negeri Padang. The data collection technique used in this research was a questionnaire with 6 indicators through google form application. Therefore, the results of this study showed that the majority of essay writing class’ students in English Department had a good perception of the implementation of blended learning in essay writing class. The students agree that the use of blended learning improves students’ ability in evaluating, analyzing and synthesizing their essay that leads to a better achievement in essay writing class and also make it efficient both in time and financial. However, the students still encounter an obstacles such as shifting from online to offline to online class and accessing virtual classes.

Abstract

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, learning had to be changed from face-to-face activities in class distance learning. While distance learning is already supported by a number technologies, there are still gaps that cause learning to be lacking effective. One concern is long-term online learning can lead to learning loss or reduced academic knowledge. This study aims to know the platform used in writing class, the advantages and disadvantages of online learning, and learning loss that happened in writing class. The participant of this study were students of the 2021 English Language Education study program who learned paragraph writing, totaling 23 students filled out questionnaires. This study used  descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The researcher used purposive sampling technique. In collecting data, the researcher used questionnaires. The results of the study show that: (1) applications that are often used in online learning are LMS/E-Learning and WhatsApp, (2) advantages of online learning, Online learning can reduce operational lecture costs such as transportation to campus (gas money), (3) disadvantages of online learning, online learning is limited due to students’ domicile and poor internet network access, (4) learning loss in online learning, including: students struggle to study for complex material while studying online, students cannot ask their friends to correct grammatical errors, and students have trouble finding examples of natural English writing.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the cognitive level of questions used by teachers on English semester tests for grade X academic year 2021/2022 at senior high schools in Bukittinggi and the problem faced by English teachers at senior high schools in Bukittinggi in constructing HOTS questions test. This research conducted by using descriptive method. The writer chose five senior high schools in Bukittinggi: SMAN 1 Bukittinggi, SMAN 2 Bukittinggi, SMAN 3 Bukittinggi, SMAN 5 Bukittinggi, and SMAN 5 Bukittinggi. In collecting the data, the writer used the document analysis and interview. From the data analysis, the writer found that English semester test made by teachers at senior high schools contained less HOTS questions where its only cover 12,9% or 23 questions out of 177 total questions. Lack of understanding and students’ readiness in receiving HOTS questions become the problem that faced by teachers in designing HOTS questions. According to the findings, the writer suggests teachers be more often involve HOTS questions into semester test. In addition, teachers should be provided with proper training related to HOTS in order to help teacher to be more familiar with designing HOTS questions.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate English teachers' readiness and the obstacles that faced in implementation of Merdeka Belajar curriculum. Thirteen junior high school English teachers from eight piloting schools (Sekolah Penggerak) in Padang were assigned to complete a questionnaire about their readiness and were interviewed the obstacles that faced in implementation of Merdeka Belajar curriculum. Quantitative analyses were employed in the research which using likert scale approach to measure the questionnaire and calculated in the average score, while data from interview were transcribed, classified and then draw conclusion. The results from quantitative analysis showed that teachers' readiness to implement the curriculum in level 3 or in category ready but need a little improvement with average score 3,20. The interview result showed that teachers have obstacle in formulating learning outcomes and applied differentiated learning in the process in teaching learning. Even the teachers is in category ready, they still need workshop and training which focused on assessment and utilization IT to help teacher create interactive media, so the teacher will be more prepare to implementation of Merdeka Belajar curriculum.

Abstract

Some of the tenth-grade students at SMKN 1 Batusangkar have been taught about pronouns, but they still make mistakes when identifying them, according to preliminary research. As a result, the goals of this study were to find out how well students at SMKN 1 Batusangkar's tenth grade use pronouns and what kind of pronouns they have the most trouble recognizing. Quantitative research was used in this study. The tenth-grade students of the state SMKN 1 Batusangkar in the academic year 2021/2022 were the subject of this study, and the student's ability in identifying pronouns were the object of this study. The researcher chose 33 students from 324 students as the sample using the cluster sampling method. The researcher used a grammar test to gather the data. The researcher identified the kinds of pronouns that students made when identifying pronouns through data analysis. Students made the most mistakes with demonstrative pronouns (226 students, or 68.48 percent), interrogative pronouns (216 students, or 65.45 percent), reflexive pronouns (195 students, or 59.09 percent), possessive pronouns (190 students, or 58.48 percent), and personal pronouns (176 students, or 53.33 percent).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ perception toward reward and punishment in learning English, kinds of reward and punishment given by the teacher in learning English, and how reward and punishment increase students’ motivation in learning English. This research uses descriptive method. A total of 68 of the eleventh grade students in SMAN 12 Padang are chosen using cluster random sampling method. Observation, questionnaire, and interview are used to collect the data. The results of this study show; (1) Teacher gives several kinds of reward in learning English, namely material or symbolic reward, teacher-based reward, preferred activity reward, and good school report reward. (2) Teacher gives several kinds of punishment in learning English, namely symbolic punishment, teacher-based punishment, curtailment activity punishment, home-linked punishment, memorizing vocabularies, and changing students’ seating arrangement. (3) The students have very positive perception toward reward in learning English. (4) The students have positive perception toward punishment in learning English. (5) Reward can encourage students to study harder and punishment give deterrent effect on students. In conclusion, the students have very positive perception toward reward and punishment in learning English. Moreover, reward and punishment affected students’ motivation in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to find the gender differences of vocabulary size of bilingual classroom’s students in SMP Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh. This study used quantitative approach with descriptive-comparative design. The participants of this study were 94 students of bilingual class in SMP Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh. The samples were chosen using purposive sampling. The data were collected using New Vocabulary Levels Test to measure the students’ vocabulary size. It was found that the vocabulary size of male students grade 7th, 8th and 9th were 2518.93 words, 3371.21 words, and 3381.94 words. While female students’ vocabulary size fore grade 7th, 8th, and 9th were 2468.25 words, 2898.80 words, and 3842.59 words. There were no statistical significant differences found between the mean vocabulary size of male and female students grade 7th and 8th. The significant difference was found in vocabulary size difference of male and female students’ in grade 9th. It can be concluded that the vocabulary size of male and female students’ were different and increased along with their educational level. The significant difference of vocabulary size between male and female students was only found in grade 9th where female students possessed a bigger number of vocabulary size compared male students.
