Abstract

Purpose of the study: Rural schools in Indonesia and other developing countries face persistent learning quality gaps because of constraints in resources, infrastructure, and teacher training, while the demand for pedagogical innovation continues to rise. This study aims to synthesize recent empirical evidence on how principals' strategic leadership and resource management facilitate pedagogical innovation in rural schools. Methodology: A systematic literature review (SLR) following the PRISMA 2020 protocol was conducted by searching Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, ERIC, and the Indonesian Garuda portal for articles published between 2015 and 2025. After multi-stage screening and quality appraisal using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) instrument, 38 articles were selected as the final corpus. Thematic analysis identified five core dimensions: (a) contextualized transformational and distributed leadership, (b) adaptive partnership-based resource management, (c) locally responsive pedagogical innovation, (d) teacher professional development through learning communities, and (e) participatory community governance. Main Findings: The findings reveal that resource scarcity is not the sole determinant of educational quality; strategic leadership that integrates moral vision, social mobilization, and technological integration can convert constraints into opportunities for innovation. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study contributes to educational management theory by proposing an integrative Strategic Resource Innovation Leadership (SRIL) framework for rural contexts, offering a novel synthesis that connects leadership, resource adaptation, and pedagogical innovation for resource-constrained rural schools.

Abstract

Indonesian pesantren faces a dual mandate: preserving spiritual and moral foundations while adapting to digital-age expectations. However, empirical evidence on which institutional drivers shape student satisfaction in this hybrid setting remains thin. This study examines the direct effects of Kiai leadership, institutional support, educational technology, and student involvement on student satisfaction across Indonesian pesantren. A quantitative cross-sectional design involving 480 stakeholders (active students, educators, alums, and institutional management) was used. Data were collected via a closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaire adapted from validated instruments and analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) on SmartPLS 3.0, with bootstrapping (5,000 resamples), f² effect size, Q² predictive relevance, and inner VIF assessment. Results show that Kiai leadership (β = 0.420, p < 0.05) and institutional support (β = 0.374, p < 0.05) are the strongest predictors of student satisfaction. Educational technology exerts a smaller yet significant positive effect (β = 0.253, p < 0.05). Student involvement, contrary to the engagement-satisfaction canon, shows no significant direct effect (β = -0.541, p > 0.05), suggesting its meaning in pesantren departs from Western engagement constructs. The findings reposition spiritual-transformational leadership and ethically framed institutional support as the foundational determinants of satisfaction in faith-based education, with technology functioning as an enabler rather than a primary driver. Practical implications underscore the need to invest in Kiai leadership development and student-centred support systems, while future research is invited to develop culturally grounded engagement scales for pesantren contexts.

Abstract

Global digital transformation compels Islamic schools to harmonize religious values with modern competencies, necessitating effective digital Leadership and the management of ICT resources. This study aims to test an integrative model analyzing the direct and indirect effects of technology-driven Leadership and ICT resource management on teacher professionalism and student digital literacy within Islamic educational settings. A quantitative cross-sectional survey method was employed, involving 377 teachers from Islamic secondary schools in Indonesia. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that digital leadership exerts a powerful direct influence on both ICT resource management (β ≈ 0.99) and teacher professionalism (β ≈ 0.99). Teacher professionalism emerged as a key mediator and a stronger predictor of students’ digital literacy than mere ICT resource availability. The study concludes that the efficacy of digital leadership is enhanced by integrating Islamic values and recommends strengthening value-based leadership capacity and sustaining teacher professional development to achieve holistic educational excellence.
