Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacterium commonly found in the environment and serves as an important indicator of microbiological contamination in cosmetic products. Its ability to survive in low nutrient conditions and its resistance to various preservatives make it a microorganism frequently found in water-based products. Contamination can occur during production, storage, and use, and has the potential to cause irritation or infection, especially in individuals with low immunity. This literature review was compiled based on data searches on PubMed, Elsevier, Google Scholar, and Scopus with inclusion criteria of original studies from 2015 to 2025 that reported the detection of P. aeruginosa in cosmetic products. The results of the review show that P. aeruginosa is not only found in new products but also in used products, mainly due to unhygienic usage practices. Although some products are declared free from contamination, monitoring of the production process and consumer education on how to use and store cosmetics are still necessary. Thus, the detection and control of P. aeruginosa are important aspects in ensuring the safety of cosmetic products on the market.

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT Natural oils, such as essential oils and oils with high unsaturated fatty acids, can be derived and extracted from plant sources. Essential oils contain aromatic compounds commonly used in the food industry, while oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids, such as omega-3, -6, and -9, along with vitamin E, are highly beneficial in industrial sectors. Furthermore, natural oils possess antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that are valuable in daily life. However, degradation of natural oils is inevitable due to various external factors such as temperature, humidity, and light. Therefore, an effective technique is required to enhance the stability of natural oils, with one of the methods being freeze drying, using wall materials made from various polymers depending on the intended application. This review aims to summarize the development of natural oils encapsulated by freeze dryingThe literature search in this review was conducted using the search engines Google Scholar and ScienceDirect. The selected papers used for this review consist of original research articles published between 2021 and 2025, focusing on natural oils unsaturated fatty acids or essential oils as the primary subject of study. Stability can be improved by examining thermal analysis parameters in various natural oils, such as walnut, sacha inchi, rose damascena, mandarin, and boswellia sacra. Storage at low temperatures helps enhance the chemical stability of natural oils. In natural oils, both essential oils and oils with high unsaturated fatty acids, stability improvement can be achieved through freeze drying using polymers as wall materials such as polysaccharides, proteins, gums, lignin, or other polymers. The use of proper machine freeze drying parameter settings is also necessary to obtain the best results with high encapsulation efficiency Keywords: Encapsulation, Essential Oils, Freeze Drying, Natural Product, Unsaturated fatty Acids.

Abstract

The use of chemical-based mosquito repellents has excellent repellent power, but their use can cause hypersensitivity and irritation. In Indonesia, there are several plants that contain essential oils and have mosquito repellent effects. One of them is cosmos (Tagetes erecta L). Cosmos leaf extract is formulated into a lotion preparation so that it can adhere to the skin for a longer time, thus providing longer-lasting mosquito repellent properties. This research aims to determine the effect of varying cetyl alcohol concentrations on the physical properties of lotion. There are 3 lotion formulas used with cetyl alcohol concentrations of 2% (F1), 2.5% (F2), and 3% (F3). The research results show that F1 has a thick texture and brownish-yellow color, F2 has a thick texture and green color, and F3 has a very thick texture and green color. All formulas are homogeneous. F1, F2, and F3 had pH values of 7.5±0, 7.5±0, and 7.9±0, respectively. F1, F2, and F3 have respective viscosities of 20±0 dPas, 30±0 dPas, and 35±0 dPas. F1, F2, and F3 had spreadability values of 8.48±0.51 cm, 7.81±0.05 cm, and 7.10±0.37 cm, respectively. The conclusion of this study is that variations in cetyl alcohol concentration affect the texture, color, pH, viscosity, and spreadability of the lotion.
