Abstract

Background: Lack of male partners’ postpartum support can cause postpartum depression (PPD), a serious mood disorder, in women. Thus, to prevent PPD, it is important to clarify the factors influencing male partners’ postpartum support. Methods: In total, 62 male partners of postpartum women at 1 week–6 months after delivery, living in South Jakarta, were invited by assistance from community volunteers. Focus group interviews were employed; participants were grouped depending on their residences and asked about their behaviors in supporting postpartum women. Interviews were documented using two voice recorders and two video recorders. The content analysis method and Bertalanffy’s system theory of internal and external factors of health behaviors was utilized to develop units and codes. Results: The analysis identified five codes of individual-level factors: (1) knowledge; (2) belief; (3) social and life adaptation skills; (4) psychological disposition; and (5) physiological condition. Three codes of community-level factors included: (1) social support; (2) media; and (3) socio-cultural and economic. Two codes of social policy-level factors included (1) health care system and; (2) Indonesian societal laws and regulations. Conclusions: Various internal and external factors influence Indonesian male partners’ postpartum support. Different interventions for these factors might be impactful in preventing PPD.

Abstract

Background: Women living with HIV (WLWH) commonly grieve but may pass through the grieving process until reaching the acceptance stage. We try to identify the relationship between children's HIV status and the acceptance stage of grief amongst WLWH. Method: This cross-sectional study utilised consecutive sampling of 235 HIV-positive women in Jakarta, Indonesia. The women were assessed with the Acceptance of Disease and Impairments Questionnaire (ADIQ). Results: Most of the respondents were housewives (65.5%), had been diagnosed over one year previously (74.5%), had an HIV-positive spouse (60.4%), had more than one child (51.5%) but none who were infected (73.6%) and assumed that their HIV status was caused by their spouse (50.2%). The respondents' median score of acceptance of their HIV status was relatively high (3 on a 1-4 scale). This showed a significant negative correlation between children's HIV status and the acceptance stage amongst HIV-positive women (p = 0.01). Conclusion: Mother-to-child HIV transmission may disrupt the mother's acceptance stage because of feelings of guilt and difficulty disclosing their status. Because the children's HIV status was correlated with the mother's acceptance stage, WLWH must comply with the Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) program during the perinatal period.

Abstract

Despite the increasing complexity of the tasks and responsibilities in providing nursing care to patients, many Indonesian nurses may not possess adequate knowledge and skills to discuss sexuality with their patients. The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of Indonesian nurses in providing nursing care to patients regarding sexual problems. This research adopted a descriptive qualitative design to explore the experiences of Indonesian nurses in solving their patient’s sexual problems. Ten nurses working in a general hospital in Indonesia participated in this work. These nurses were interviewed extensively, and the data were transcribed and analyzed thematically. Four main themes were identified in this study: (1) Nurses believe that discussing a patient's sexual problems as part of their professional responsibility, (2) discomfort and embarrassments are barriers to providing adequate solutions to help resolve a patient's sexual problems, (3) nurses assume that most patients are not interested in discussing sexual problems because of illness, and (4) nurses do not have the confidence to discuss the patient's sexual problems. The findings of this study confirm that many nurses feel hesitant and uncomfortable when addressing patients' sexual problems. Thus, Indonesian nurses require more training related to providing nursing care to patients with sexual problems. Abstract

Anxiety and depression are psychological distress that often occurs in gynecological cancer patients. However, there are few studies related to interventions to overcome these problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a spiritual intervention on anxiety and depression in such cancer patients. The research design was quasi-experimental, employing pretest and posttest on the intervention and the control groups. The total number of respondents was 108 patients, consisting of 54 in each group. The instrument used in the study was the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The spiritual intervention consisted of four sessions, namely an introduction and relaxation session, a control session, an identity session, and a relationship and prayer therapy session, held over two weeks. The data analysis showed a change in the mean score of anxiety and depression in the intervention group after the spiritual intervention (p = 0.001). Also, there were differences in the mean scores of anxiety and depression between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.001). The result implies that spiritual intervention can be applied as part of holistic nursing care for cancer patients, especially gynecological ones. Abstract

The incidence of breast cancer in Indonesia is the highest among other cancers in women, with an estimated prevalence of fatigue between 25-99%. The current study is a 6-week mixed methods action study on fatigue in breast cancer patients. This study aimed to develop a self-management intervention program to reduce empowerment-based fatigue with telenursing strategies and to seek evidence of its effect on fatigue levels, self-esteem, body image, and quality of life. The first stage describes the problem with a qualitative method by exploring the fatigue problem in the survivor's perception. The second stage is the intervention development stage, and the third stage is testing the effectiveness of the intervention, carried out in a quasi-experimental study with a pre-posttest control group design. The first stage produces five themes, and the second stage produces nursing interventions based on transitional nursing theory and telenursing strategies. The third stage of the study proved that the fatigue management intervention (IPK) effectively reduced fatigue levels, increased self-esteem and body image, and improved the quality of life in breast cancer patients. This study recommends oncology nurses consider empowering survivors using this intervention so that the transition period for breast cancer survivors achieves healthy physical and psychological health, achieving optimal health after a cancer diagnosis.

Abstract

Prevention and management of nausea and vomiting are important in cancer treatment. Effective management requires both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Patients and family members have important contributions to achieve effective control of nausea and vomiting through self-management. The objective of this review is to explore and synthesize the scientific literature about self-management strategies as a type of non-pharmacological intervention for managing nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. The articles were searched in PubMed, Science Direct and ClinicalKey databases using keyword combinations of "cancer", “non-pharmacological”, "intervention", "management", "nausea" and "vomiting". The inclusion criteria were articles that were free; full text; published in the last five years; provided information about non-pharmacological strategies in managing nausea and vomiting in cancer; and were written in English. Out of a total of 232 papers identified, 21 were selected. The results show that non-pharmacological management of nausea and vomiting ranged from simple self-management techniques to integrative therapies and palliative interventions. Self-management emphasizes patient autonomy in their own care and encourages patients and families to assume the responsibility of managing relevant aspects of their condition. The strategies include dietary modifications, environmental modifications, psychological strategies, exercise and taking of medication as prescribed. The interventions discussed in this article can be applied by patients as directed or instructed by healthcare teams. Nurses play an important role in educating patients on non-pharmacological interventions and encouraging them to achieve self-efficacy. Further research of other such interventions with larger sample sizes is needed to provide more accurate results.
