Abstract

This study was motivated by the need to develop innovative, visual, and concise learning media to support students’ understanding of the aldol reaction topic in the Mechanisms and Synthesis of Organic Compounds (MSSO) course. This study aims to analyze the need for developing a chemistry magazine on the topic of aldol reactions, particularly crossed aldol reactions. This descriptive study with a mixed-method approach involved 31 Chemistry Education students at the University of Mataram from the 2022 cohort who had taken the MSSO course. The research instruments included a needs analysis questionnaire consisting of nine questions, semi-structured interview guidelines for three informants, and a document analysis sheet. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive percentages, whereas qualitative data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that all students (100%) experienced difficulties in understanding the mechanism of crossed aldol reactions, while the available learning media, namely PowerPoint presentations and textbooks, were considered ineffective by 100% of respondents. In addition, 93.5% of students strongly agreed that a chemistry magazine was the desired learning medium. Students’ preferences for reading supplements included colorful layouts (87.1%), a combination of text and images (90.3%), and a communicative language style (83.9%). These findings indicate a gap between students’ need for innovative, visual, and concise reading supplements and the reality of learning, which still relies on conventional media. The conclusion of this study affirms that the results of the needs analysis serve as an important basis for developing a chemistry magazine on crossed aldol reaction material as a valid, practical, and effective reading supplement.

Abstract

The development of digital technology-based learning evaluation media is needed to support more interactive chemistry learning, particularly on the topic of Redox Reactions, which is abstract and has the potential to cause conceptual difficulties for students. This study aims to describe the process of developing learning evaluation media based on the Kahoot game application on the topic of Redox Reactions and to determine its level of feasibility and practicality for Grade X students at SMAN 5 Mataram. This study used a Research and Development method with the 4D model, which includes the Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. The study was conducted at SMAN 5 Mataram by involving expert validators, chemistry subject teachers, and Grade X students as research subjects. Data were collected through validation sheets and practicality response questionnaires, then analyzed using quantitative descriptive techniques to measure material feasibility, media feasibility, and user responses in the field. The results showed that the developed Kahoot game media met the feasibility criteria, with an average validation percentage of 93.13% in the very valid category. The practicality level of the media based on teacher responses obtained a score of 85%, while student responses obtained a score of 86.68%, and both were included in the very practical category. The conclusion of this study affirms that Kahoot game-based learning evaluation media on the topic of Redox Reactions has met the standards of validity and practicality for use in Grade X chemistry learning. These findings imply the use of interactive digital evaluation media as a supporting tool for innovative learning, while also encouraging the optimization of feedback features in the final product to strengthen independent conceptual understanding and directly minimize students’ misconceptions.

Abstract

Abstract

Although students’ critical thinking skills have received wide attention in educational research, studies that specifically examine the implementation of the POE2WE learning model at the senior high school level remain relatively limited. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the POE2WE learning model on the critical thinking skills of Grade XI students at SMAN 8 Mataram in the 2025/2026 academic year. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method was employed, using a pretest–posttest control group design involving 64 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an essay test consisting of five items that had been tested for validity and reliability, then analyzed through normality and homogeneity tests, followed by hypothesis testing using a t-test at a 0.05 significance level. The results showed a statistically significant difference in critical thinking skills between students taught using the POE2WE learning model and those receiving conventional instruction, with a significance value of 0.004 (< 0.05). These findings contribute to the development of constructivist learning theory and provide empirical support for the effectiveness of the POE2WE model in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills in the senior high school context. The study concludes that the POE2WE learning model plays an important role in developing critical thinking skills and deserves consideration as an alternative instructional approach in classroom practice.
