Abstract

Abstract

Improving students’ understanding of chemistry can be supported by learning resources linked to everyday life, such as integrating chemistry with local wisdom. Yet, many teachers still face challenges in identifying scientific concepts within Sasambo ethnochemistry due to limited knowledge of its types, processes, and meanings. To address this issue, a socialization program was conducted to strengthen teachers’ understanding of the application of Sasambo-based ethnochemistry teaching materials. The program involved 31 chemistry teachers from both public and private high schools in East Lombok Regency, representing diverse age ranges and teaching experiences. The activity received positive responses from participants. Results of the pretest and posttest revealed a significant shift from the low knowledge category to the good and very good categories. This indicates that the socialization effectively enhanced teachers’ comprehension of both the concepts and applications of ethnochemistry in chemistry instruction. These findings highlight that socialization serves not only as a medium for knowledge transfer but also as an initial step in preparing teachers to design contextual teaching resources systematically, rooted in local cultural values.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the comparison of the implementation of PjBL with the STEM model based on gender. The type of research used is a One-Shot Case Study, namely an experiment carried out without a comparison group. All groups were given learning using PjBL STEM. The STEM aspects observed in this research are aspects of science (S), science–technology (S–T), science–engineering (S–E), and science–mathematics (S–M). The data collection method uses a series of questionnaires and tests. Data analysis uses N-gain to see an increase in learning outcomes regarding environmental pollution material. The research results show that STEM applications are not influenced by gender. It can be seen that student learning outcomes have increased with average N_gain of 0.92 and 0.83 respectively (high category).

Abstract

This study aims to identify chemical concepts in tofu making and package them in the form of a magazine as a supplement to chemistry learning for high school. The development of a chemistry magazine uses a 4D model. The feasibility of ChemMag as a reading material is analyzed by validation tests and student and teacher responses. The identification results show that the chemical concepts in the tofu making process include: protein, fat, carbohydrates, organic acids, coagulation, colloids, and others. The results of the development are in the form of a chemistry magazine entitled ChemMag: chemical concepts in the tofu making process. The validation results show that the developed chemistry magazine has a validity level of 0.85 with a very valid category. The feasibility level is 84.79% and is categorized as very feasible. So it can be concluded that the ChemMag that has been designed is very feasible to be used as a supplement to chemistry learning in high school.

Abstract

Pre-lab activities have not been a serious concern, especially in the development of instruments. Until now, pre-lab activities have only provided tests based on work procedures or concepts described in the practicum instructions. Instruments capable of measuring various aspects of basic laboratory skills have not been widely developed. This study aims to develop a pre-laboratory instrument based on basic laboratory skills. Five categories of basic skills were identified: procedural, manipulative, observation, interpretation, and conclusion skills. A total of 20 items, representing various aspects of the identified skills, were developed and deemed feasible through expert agreement. Testing the instrument on 45 respondents revealed that 15 questions met the criteria for validity (p<0.05) and demonstrated good reliability.

Abstract

Implementation of Integrated Problem-Based Learning and Storytelling Technique on Learning Outcomes and Attitudes Towards Chemistry. Objective: This study aims to analyze the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) integrated with storytelling on learning outcomes and attitudes towards chemistry in basic chemistry courses. Methods: This experimental study employed a pretest-post-test control group design. The sample consisted of 99 new students from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology enrolled in basic chemistry courses, with 49 students in the experimental group and 50 in the control group. The research instruments included a critical thinking test with 15 validated multiple-choice questions (Cronbach's alpha = 0.817) and an attitude towards chemistry instrument based on four categories (Cronbach's alpha = 0.765). Data analysis was performed using MANOVA. Results: The results showed that the N-gain of student learning outcomes was higher in the experimental group compared to the control group. Similarly, students' attitudes towards chemistry in the experimental group, which received PBL with storytelling integration, were higher in all categories than those in the control group. The highest attitude scores in the experimental group were in the categories of attitude towards chemistry material and confidence in learning chemistry, while the lowest score was in the category of attitude towards chemistry laboratory work. In the control group, the highest score was in the category of the tendency to learn chemistry, with the lowest score matching the experimental group's lowest category. The MANOVA test indicated a significant effect of PBL with storytelling integration on both learning outcomes and attitudes towards chemistry. Conclusion: Implementing problem-based learning integrated with storytelling in basic chemistry courses positively influences learning outcomes and attitudes towards chemistry, with the experimental group showing better results compared to the control group. Keywords: attitudes towards chemistry, critical thinking, storytelling, problem based learning.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202477

Abstract

This study aims to identify the chemical concepts contained in the process of making coconut oil, then the results of the identification and documentation are compiled into a chemistry magazine for senior high schools. The process of making coconut oil is done by two methods, namely heating/traditional and fermentation. The preparation of a chemical magazine is carried out using the method according to Borg & Gall which is simplified into five stages, namely preliminary studies, planning, initial product development, field implementation tests, and product finalization. There are several chemical concepts related to the process of making coconut oil, namely macromolecules, mixture separation, boiling point elevation, and colloids. Magazine feasibility testing is done by validating and analyzing student responses. The results showed that the magazine developed was very valid with an average value of V on the components of graphics, content feasibility, presentation feasibility, and magazine language respectively 0.92, 0.91, 0.96, and 0.88. The results of the student response analysis show that the developed magazine is very feasible with an average percentage of 90%.
