Abstract

This study aims to examine the music genre preferences of Malaysian teenagers toward Indonesian music, specifically the Pop and Dangdut genres. The background of the research is based on the growing influence of Indonesian music culture among Malaysian youth. The method used is a quantitative approach with a survey design. The population consisted of 151 Form IV students at SMK Methodist Tanjong Malim, Malaysia, with a random sample of 106 students selected using the Isaac and Michael table. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews, then analyzed descriptively and in percentages. The results show that 69.8% of respondents preferred Indonesian Pop music, while 30.2% preferred Indonesian Dangdut. These preferences were influenced by environmental factors and ethnic background; students of Chinese and Indian descent tended to be less interested in Indonesian music. The aspects of enjoyment, attention, and willingness toward Indonesian music were found to be high. Respondents favored melodies that are easy to enjoy and lyrics that are relatable to daily life. Their favorite singer was Keisya Levronka. The study concludes that Indonesian Pop music is more popular among Malaysian teenagers. This research contributes to enriching cross-cultural studies in music and international communication in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an effective project-based logo and typography learning model in improving the motivation and understanding of grade VII students at SMP Negeri 3 Guntur, Demak. This study employs a qualitative approach, combining autoethnography and classroom action research (CAR). Autoethnography is used to reflect on the researcher's experience as a teacher, while CAR is used to test and refine the learning model through two cycles of action. Data were collected through observation, teacher reflective journals, learning motivation questionnaires, student work, interviews, and visual documentation. The project-based learning model is designed to enable students to develop visual skills through creative, collaborative, and applicative processes. The results of the study indicate that this model can enhance students' intrinsic motivation, particularly in terms of autonomy, competence, and social connectedness, in line with Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000). In addition, students' understanding of visual design concepts also increased, as indicated by the quality of the logo and typography projects assessed using an assessment rubric. The researcher's reflection shows that this approach is effective in creating contextual, meaningful, and challenging learning. This study suggests the wider application of this model in schools with similar conditions to strengthen visual skills-based learning.

Abstract

This research examines Sasando as a symbol of cultural identity and pride of the people of Rote Island by exploring its philosophical values, social functions, and the challenges of its preservation in the midst of modernization. The present study employed a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with Sasando players, craftsmen, and cultural figures. The research findings reveal three key aspects: the value of cultural identity reflected in the use of natural materials (bamboo and palm) and its role in traditional rituals as a marker of local wisdom, social function as a medium of community unification in collaborative events and a means of intergenerational value transmission, and preservation challenges in the form of declining interest from the younger generation, lack of integration in formal education, and limited promotion. The research also identified opportunities through cultural festivals and tourism-based economic potential. The research conclusions emphasize that Sasando is not merely a musical instrument, but rather a symbol of collective identity that represents the history, social values, and cultural resilience of the Rote people. The following policy recommendations are put forth: first, the integration of a Sasando-based curriculum; second, the strengthening of youth training programs; and third, multi-stakeholder collaboration for sustainable promotion strategies. This research makes a theoretical contribution to the discussion of the relationship between traditional musical instruments, identity construction, and cultural preservation strategies in the midst of globalization.

Abstract

This study focuses on the integration of Indonesian traditional music education at the elementary school level as a strategy for promoting culture in Indonesia. It recognizes the significance of social capital, cultural capital, and knowledge capital as the foundation for fostering a comprehensive and systematic approach to cultural development. The research employs interview, observation, and literature review methods to gather data, guided by three key questions: (1) the current state of traditional music teaching in Indonesian elementary schools, (2) the strategies employed in integrating traditional music education, and (3) the outcomes of the Archipelago Traditional Music pre-congress in 2021 within the paradigm of elementary school music education. The analysis is primarily based on the implementation of previous policies and programs, particularly those managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The study's findings reveal several important aspects, including: (1) the need for statutory regulations supporting the conservation of traditional music programs, (2) fostering active collaboration between teachers and traditional artists or musicians through open participation, (3) providing necessary facilities and infrastructure to create an ecosystem conducive to traditional music education at the elementary school level, (4) implementing training programs to enhance the traditional music competence of elementary school teachers, and (5) involving the traditional music community in the design of the curriculum for traditional music education in elementary schools. These results underscore the importance of integrating traditional music education at the elementary school level to promote Indonesian culture. By implementing the suggested strategies, policymakers and educators can contribute to the preservation and development of traditional music, creating a stronger cultural foundation within Indonesian society.

Abstract

The Baris Dadap dance is a sacred dance performed by four to six male dancers, typically staged during the Dewa Yadnya ceremony (a sincere and wholehearted offering to the Almighty God). The Baris Dadap dance has distinctive characteristics that set it apart from other types of Baris dances, particularly in its performance structure, which combines movements and gending (traditional Balinese song), referred to in Balinese as wirama. This study aims to (1) describe the performance form of the Baris Dadap dance and (2) analyze the didactic implications of the gending text in the Baris Dadap dance on the formation of knowledge within the Batur traditional village community in Bali. This research employs a qualitative method with data sources including the Baris Dadap dance performance, dancers, musicians, community elders, cultural figures, and journals related to previous research findings. Structural functional theory and Balinese dance theory are used to analyze all data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that (1) the performance form of the Baris Dadap dance is built on three main frameworks—dance movements, gending texts sung by the dancers, and accompanying music—with the structure of the performance divided into three parts: the first part called pepeson, the second part called pengadeng, and the third part called pekaad; (2) the didactic values in the gending text of the Baris Dadap dance have implications for the formation of a knowledge system in the aspects of tattwa (philosophy), susila (morality), and upacara (rituals). The new findings of this study reveal that the values embedded in traditional dances and their meanings can serve as a conscious means of imparting human knowledge to achieve physical and spiritual harmony.

Abstract

This research uses a case study approach to explore the role of the Sineprak community in preserving and developing the ketoprak performing arts in the modern era. The main focus of this research is on the intensive training process of actors and directors, which includes technical aspects and deepens the script and interprets the role. The COVID-19 pandemic forced Sineprak to switch to digital platforms, especially YouTube, which has attracted thousands of followers. However, after Bondan Nusantara's death, the frequency of performances decreased significantly. The community-based education process at Sineprak contains Javanese cultural values such as courtesy, etiquette and cooperation, which help shape the character of the younger generation. Innovations in the presentation of modern ketoprak, including combining elements of other performing arts and modern technology, have succeeded in attracting the interest of today's audiences. Documentation and publication via social media play an important role in expanding audience reach.
