Abstract

This study aims to explore the usage of L1 in teaching English based on the students’ perspectives. The study employed questionnaire and interview to obtain the data about the students’ perspectives on the usage of L1 in EFL classroom, the proper contexts where the lecturer must use L1, and whether there are differences from the low and high achiever students’ perspectives. There are 163 participants from English education students contribute to this study and 37 of them are interviewed. The results suggest that the students have positive attitude toward the using of Bahasa Indonesia as the students first language (L1) in their English classroom, particularly when the lecturers explaining difficult linguistic concept and clarifying their instructions. There is no different opinion between the low and high achiever students toward the using of L1 in the teaching and learning process. They all agree that Bahasa Indonesia as the students’ first language still holds an important role in the process of learning foreign languages.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the challenges faced by lecturers in implementing flipped learning in classroom settings. Through in-depth interviews and observations, the research identifies key barriers such as student preparedness, technological issues, and resistance to new pedagogical approaches. The findings reveal that while some students engage actively when they come prepared, many others struggle to see the value in pre-class materials, which affects overall class dynamics. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of collaboration among educators, as working with experienced colleagues can provide invaluable resources and strategies to mitigate these challenges. The insights gained from this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in adopting flipped learning and offer practical recommendations for enhancing student engagement and improving teaching practices in higher education.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions and experiences of Smart Classroom-Based Blended Learning in English for Sports at STKIP YPUP Makassar. It examines its effectiveness, user experiences, and challenges. Using a descriptive quantitative survey, data were collected from 30 first-semester students through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings show that 84.07% of students had positive perceptions, especially regarding engagement and accessibility. However, only 26.7% found it enhanced collaboration, and technological issues were a concern, with only 16.7% reporting platform compatibility and 13.3% finding internet connectivity sufficient. The results align with Alimuddin et al. (2023), who emphasized the need for adequate training to optimize digital learning. This study contributes to technology-enhanced education, highlighting the need for better infrastructure, digital literacy training, and improved instructional strategies.

Abstract

This research explores the perceptions of Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) higher education students towards the use of web-based collaborative writing tools, focusing on Padlet, in argumentative essay writing. Employing a qualitative case study design, the study utilized semi-structured interviews with ten students from an English Education Program in Makassar, Indonesia. The data, analyzed through thematic analysis, revealed that students perceive Padlet as highly useful due to its ability to organize ideas, facilitate collaboration and feedback, enhance accessibility and flexibility, improve writing skills, and offer time efficiency. Additionally, students found Padlet easy to use, citing its intuitive interface, ease of getting started, seamless integration into their workflow, adaptability to various writing stages, provision of control over the writing process, and minimal technical issues. These findings underscore the potential of Padlet in enhancing EFL writing instruction by providing an interactive and visually appealing platform that addresses the specific needs of EFL learners in argumentative essay writing. The study concludes that web-based collaborative tools like Padlet can significantly contribute to developing confident and competent writers in EFL contexts, highlighting the importance of integrating such technologies to bridge the digital divide and transform traditional writing pedagogies.

Abstract

Law students, especially those specializing in international law, encounter significant challenges regarding their critical reading abilities. Critical reading necessitates active engagement, compelling readers to think critically and employ various skills to identify key concepts, draw conclusions, make connections, anticipate purposes, analyze arguments, consider diverse perspectives, and evaluate ideas effectively. This research investigates the role of critical reading skills in enhancing the academic competence of law students within the context of international law. It employs a qualitative research design, utilizing case studies, interviews, and focus group discussions with fifth-semester students at the Faculty of Law, Muslim University of Indonesia. The findings reveal that critical reading skills significantly improve students' abilities to analyze complex legal texts, such as treaties and court decisions, by enabling them to identify key arguments, underlying biases, and contextual nuances. Structured frameworks, such as the SQ3R method and Legal Case-Based Reading (LCbR), are shown to foster deeper engagement with materials and facilitate the application of legal principles to real-world scenarios. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of exploring diverse perspectives, particularly those of marginalized groups, in enriching students' understanding of social and cultural implications. Ultimately, this research contributes to legal education reform by emphasizing the necessity of integrating critical reading skills into law curricula to better prepare students for the challenges of professional practice.
